We now know harmful “forever chemicals” are likely in the bodies of most people on Earth. Decades ago, 3M knew that these chemicals had seeped into the public’s blood, but they kept that a secret. One 3M scientist helped reporter Sharon Lerner understand how they kept it quiet for so long:

No joke - was just considering the fact that the Nazis are eight points clear in the German polls when, twice in ten minutes, two different white German men barged into my back as I was carrying two handfuls and a rucksack of groceries. Just a perfect illustration of the growing misanthropy here.

Black children should be able to swim safely. Germany's far-right party leader calls it "Apartheid." Whoever uses that word for a children's pool either doesn't know what Apartheid was – or knows exactly what they're doing. And yet this party is currently leading in the polls in parts of Germany.

Last week I checked in on a friend, someone who I thought would be one of the very last immigrants (who have any other options) to leave Germany, only to find that they and their family are already in the process of leaving. Their explicit reason: the rise of fascism. Very, very disturbing times.
The thing is: “remigration” is already happening. Far from the comments sections underneath pieces of writing like these, where people exchange anguished or angry words about the future of Germany and the country’s soul, people are already leaving. Foreigners out, cry the protesters, and in some sense they are getting their wish. Every few weeks, I go to check in on a friend or acquaintance and find that they are either in the process of packing their bags or they are gone, gone, gone. In general the white ones are staying in Europe and the non-white ones are putting an entire ocean between themselves and here. Germany’s problem isn’t the loud migrants like me. It’s the ones who right now are leaving silently, never to return.
