In typical Ivan fashion, however, he doesn’t say anything. He can resist the urge. He has to. 𝑯𝒆 𝒏𝒆𝒆𝒅𝒔 𝒕𝒐.

Ivan gets urges to eat flowers when he’s around Till, he’ll eat any flower in his vicinity but it’s never enough. Anemones. His body wants those. It’s toxic, he knows, but the flower. It’s like his mind was telling him “that one”. “That one will take all the pain away.”

Ivan smiles, grinning so wide he feels his cheeks hurt. “Thank you…” Thank you… but it's not enough.

“You did all this… for me?” Ivan couldn’t believe it, and he couldn’t believe Till’s nonchalant response afterwards. “Why wouldn’t we?”

“These are edible and won’t send you to the hospital, so stop eating the anemones and any other toxic flowers, okay!” Till says, mouth half full, earning him a light scolding from his mother.

Ivan watches both Till and Io sigh in relief as they both start eating as well, the orchids included. “I hope it still tastes like home to you, Ivan. I tried my best with what we had,” Io explains, and Ivan feels something warm against his chest.

The sight of it brings his urges to a high. Ivan takes a bite. And he feels something different. It doesn’t hurt.

Ivan is choosing to ignore the way Till and Io stare at him when he gets his plate full of food. Why were they acting strange today? Ivan takes a closer look at the food. There’s orchid petals on it. Huh?

He needs something in his mouth, something that will stop him from instinctively biting the orchids still in his hands. Io has impeccable timing. Their plate of food is placed down and she takes a seat across the two boys.

But Ivan doesn’t complain and silently listens to his friend ramble about his drawings. His urge to eat flowers gets worse when he's around Till, but he never says it. It might scare him away.

Till practically pushes Ivan onto his seat at the table, taking the seat next to him, as he shows Ivan his latest drawings. Weird. Till usually never shows him his drawings.

Ivan lets himself be guided into Till’s home, his mother already setting the dining table with three sets of plates and utensils and greeting him with a smile as usual.

“What are you doing? Come in already, dummy.” Till lets his hand fall from atop Ivan’s head and takes his hand, pulling him along inside his house.

Ivan freezes at the sound of his friend’s voice. He shuts his eyes and awaits the incoming scolding he’s bound to get. When nothing comes and only the feeling of a hand on his head, Ivan opens his eyes.

Ivan knows he gets sick after eating them, but he just can’t seem to stop himself. He feels the worst for the trouble he brings Till and his mom with all the hospital trips. Ivan is munching on three of the five orchids he plucked when— “There you are!”

The next time Ivan comes over Till’s home, he immediately spots color—orchids, newly planted it would seem. The urge tugs at him instantly, and Ivan guiltily crouches his way over and picks a few flowers.

It was getting to the point that Till worries Ivan will get sent to the hospital again. Till decides he needs to do something.

“No more eating flowers…!” Till exclaims, and Ivan nods slowly. “Okay.” Till finds Ivan eating flowers again the next day.

Till smiles, then frowns, then moves forward and hugs Ivan tight. He hugs him so tight Ivan had to tap his shoulder to tell him to let him breathe.

Ivan wakes to Till’s teary face and manages to squeeze the hand holding his. Till’s head snaps towards him and a look of absolute relief crosses his face.

Till sniffles. He should have fought harder to keep Ivan from eating those flowers. There was something else they said, but Till couldn’t make out what the words meant.

Red faced with tear-stained cheeks, Till holds his friend’s hand tightly and prays he would get better. Till overheard the doctors explain that the flowers Ivan had eaten, anemones it was called, were toxic and to make sure to keep it away from him again if he tries to eat it again.

Till and Io wait in the hospital until the doctors confirm Ivan’s condition. With Ivan’s parents being no-shows, Io is the one who ends up filling out the hospital forms while Till sits beside a sleeping Ivan.

Io rushes outside at the sound of her son and immediately zones in on Ivan. Wrapping the two children in blankets, Io carries them in her arms and rushes to the nearest hospital.

In an instant, his anger disappears. Till is at Ivan’s side in a blink, a hand on his friend's back, as Ivan coughs and heaves. Ivan looks in pain, a lot of it, and Till doesn’t know what to do. Ivan vomits, and Till cries out for his mother.

Seeing his mother’s garden a mess and his flower crown reduced to stems, Till wants to scream out hurtful words he knows he’ll regret, but suddenly— Ivan crumples down onto the ground.

Despite his smaller frame, Ivan wins the tug of war and Till ends up with his butt on the ground as he helplessly watches his friend swallow every flower.

“Give it back! You can’t eat it, it’s for Mizi!” He pulls at Ivan’s hair, trying to pry the flower crown from his mouth, but his words only seem to make Ivan clench onto it harder.

Till remembers balling his eyes out after Ivan suddenly ate the flower crown he was going to give Mizi. Frustration and angry bubbles, and soon, the tears start coming.

Kids eat anything and everything they think looks edible all the time. Whether those things are safe for human consumption is the adults’ responsibility to ensure.
