Here's my "9 formative anime" list without thinking too hard about it. So who else remembers when suncoast video was one of the major sources of anime in the USA?
A thing going around: "My 9 Animes: The 9 Anime that shaped who I am"
My list includes: Akira, Ranma 1/2, Macross, El Hazard, Battle Angel Alita, Princess Mononoke, Ninja Scroll, FLCL, and MS Gundam Wing

My complete lack of surprise at this exercise. But it is fun to see very clearly where I grew up, and then you might also tell where I have lived the second half of my life.

My immediate thought was "100 listens... so any album I liked for a year when I was a teenager, that's still a lot of options" so maybe the weirdest one I could pick using that criterion is:

14/128 The Demon is a great character, and nightmare makes the health cost of buying items more meaningful than it sometimes is at lower difficulties. This run cooperated very well for a strong elemental build so it was pretty smooth sailing all the way through.

13/128 The Creature. So, in nightmare mode the "boom or bust" aspect of runs is strongly amplified. This is usually an easier character in regular modes but the added difficulty of cursed enemies can get you into trouble in mid-run nightmare. But get past it and you're back to smooth sailing.
Brotato successful endscreen with The Creature and submachine guns (and one minigun) in nightmare difficulty.

12/128 The Bull. Super easy normally, still very easy on nightmare. It felt like pretty good luck, but when you discard all weapons from the item pool it's just going to be easier to find good items. But this was a very cooperative run.

11/128 Well-rounded. I can't get this character off to a good enough start with any ranged weapons so I intended to run hatchets, but the game tossed me lot of random stuff this run. It all worked out ok, but on nightmare mode ranged weapons are weak starts if the char doesn't give them bonuses
brotato end screen. successful nightmare run with the well-rounded character and a mix of hatchets and explosive hammers for weapons.

10/128 Masochist. This character + shields has always been an easy run at lower difficulties, and it stays that way on nightmare. Possibly the easiest run so far on nightmare.

9/128 Mage. The Icicle is probably the best elemental weapon overall and a good choice for nightmare. Burning damage isn't that great until you get a lot of it which is why I like the icicle, but the greek fire item instantly makes it a boss killer.

8/128 Multitasker. Usually one of my favorites. Stick is pretty great obviously, but for nightmare you really have to be on top of your defense and healing to make short range melee weapons work. I did manage to get over 100% lifesteal due to a fun axolotl though!
Brotato end screen of a successful nightmare difficulty run with the Multitasker using sticks.

7/128 The Ogre is very fun when you make everything explode in multiple ways. All damage is good damage, and health is also damage, and by the way, you get more damage for getting more damage. I got a good draw with horde waves, but I didn't get any +enemy items this run which would have been A+

6/128 The Hiker. Kinda Meh, but free HP and money for speed isn't terrible. I had good luck with weapons and upgrades this run. The thief dagger is a good way to make up for the 50% money drop rate if you can keep the damage up.

5/128 The mutant is strong. This was an odd run since I didn't get any +xp items besides the weapons, but I got very good luck on my level ups. I usually try to stack +xp as high as possible to lean into that aspect rather than try to mitigate the +item cost with more econ.

4/128 The Chef might be the character that is most helped by using the item that they unlock (the spoon), and that weapon makes even nightmare difficulty pretty easy as long as you can keep up your defense.

3/128 The Knight is great because obviously any time you can buy defense and get offense for free from it, that's a strong ability. Not too difficult if your start cooperates by giving you your weapon of choice quickly.
A finished Brotato run at nightmare difficulty on the abyss map, using the knight. Weapons are quarterstaffs

2/128 Renegade is usually one of my easier runs and this wound up pretty easy too. I went with my favorite weapon, and I ended up having pretty good shop luck overall. Ranged is inherently safer as usual, and for nightmare difficulty that's made a big difference for me so far.
A brotato run ending screen. This was a Nightmare difficulty run in the Abyss with a Renegade, using all Laser Guns and a very random assortment of items as befits the renegade character.

1/128 Guess I'm gonna post about this. First win is with one of the easier classes (Doctor). Nightmare is tough, but the basic wave setup is the same. Mostly a lot more damage flying around and regularly spawning projectiles that get pretty easy to run around once you get used to them.
