Much of the radioactivity of fracking waste is alpha and beta radiation, radon, particulate matter. Monitoring gamma radiation is one step in the right direction, but not enough to quantify the full harm and risks a program that deems radioactive waste "safe".

In June, FracTracker appealed DEP’s Danylko 6 “mineral brine” permit precisely because of questions like these. The permit appears to create a new pathway for producing and distributing brine without clearly resolving what rules apply to it. fractracker.org/2026/06/pa-d...

More than 1M gallons of drilling fluid were lost in Washington County, PA during drilling for the Chiarelli to Imperial Pipeline Project. Spills occurred at least 19 times Oct-Jan. The company told PA DEP it did not contact residents or test groundwater after the fluid disappeared into the mine.
