Commander players, what’s your favorite card draw spell in commander?

How do you guys make good mulligan decisions in your commander decks? Would love to know in the comments!

Commander Mullingan Rules TLDR - Keep commander hands with enough mana to cast your commander - Avoid hands with all payoff cards - Look for engine pieces your deck needs to function

It’s hard to give a rule for EVERY deck about mulligans They all have different needs and have different game plans. But you need to be better at knowing what hands contribute to your plan and what relies on hope and prayers

Foxys Proxys @foxysproxys.bsky.social · 14/04/2026
Alternatively, look for engine pieces in your opening hands Creature focused decks with Guardian Project or Beast Whisperer will guarantee you to start digging through your deck

What else does your deck do? Keep hands that benefit the game plan. Dont keep hands that are all payoff with no gas. A spell slinger deck with no spells is un-keepable

Foxys Proxys @foxysproxys.bsky.social · 14/04/2026
Have a 3 or 4 mana commander? Dont keep hands with less than 3 lands. You wont be guaranteed your commander on curve otherwise So play enough lands you are very likely to hit this

Foxys Proxys @foxysproxys.bsky.social · 14/04/2026
Mana Your hand should be able to reliably execute your game plan. Usually this means casting your commander on curve

The art of mulligans in Commander Your opening hand can be a deciding factor between having a good game or a non-game. Most people don’t look too hard at their openers or make good mulligan decisions Heres a couple of tips for better mulls

What do you think is the strongest Secrets of Strixhaven precon?
000
Foxys Proxys @foxysproxys.bsky.social · 14/04/2026
Prismari is probably the weakest of the precons Seems like a really fun deck but it wants to cast big spells and doesn’t have the ramp that Quandrix has
100
Foxys Proxys @foxysproxys.bsky.social · 14/04/2026
Lorehold precon takes Boros in a fun direction, I just don’t know if it has the power to compete with the others right out the box
100
Foxys Proxys @foxysproxys.bsky.social · 14/04/2026
Silverquill is middle of the road I love the forced combat theme, but a lot of the decks seems to rely on 1 for 1 trades with opponents. Which doesn’t do well in a 4 person game
100
Foxys Proxys @foxysproxys.bsky.social · 14/04/2026
Quandrix is probably the second strongest from the precons Zimone seems like a strong mana reducer. Since these games don’t go fast she has plenty of time to get all the value off big X spells
100
Foxys Proxys @foxysproxys.bsky.social · 14/04/2026
Witherbloom is the best deck from the SOS precons Token creation, lifegain, and aristocrats just seems like a strong and resilient strategy to me. Especially in a precon environment

Here’s my completely objective ranking of the new Strixhaven Commander decks - Witherbloom - Quandrix - Silverquill - Lorehold - Prismari I will be explaining myself

Oh that’s a great point thanks! Yeah I guess I’ve never really dialed it in like that before

Foxys Proxys @foxysproxys.bsky.social · 13/04/2026
Yeah finding those thematic cards that also fill these other slots is really nice. It gives you the room to make the deck feel unique and still functional

Must have missed this Strixhaven spoiler A 2 mana “rock” that can be your commander Really feel like I need a build for this where I copy it, bounce it to hand, and do some shenanigans. Just don’t know what they are yet

Fun little combo I’ve been playing in Zellix/ Haunted one Not infinite necessarily but very fun Even without Millikin, Intruder Alarm should be in more Zellix decks than 16%

Hope this helps! Using tools like Arkidekt or Moxfield are great if you’re running into color requirement issues because they do the math for you Anyone have a good method for building mana bases in decks?
000
Foxys Proxys @foxysproxys.bsky.social · 11/04/2026
Pay attention to color requirements. if you have 38 black pips and only 24 red pips you shouldn’t have a 50/50 split on lands. You’ll end up not having the black mana you need to cast your spells
100
Foxys Proxys @foxysproxys.bsky.social · 11/04/2026
38 lands should be the absolute minimum in casual commander decks 40-43 is often a much more consistent option. If you aim for nothing else, make sure you hit your land drops every turn. Missing one but playing ramp is really just costing you mana to be where you should have been anyway
100
Foxys Proxys @foxysproxys.bsky.social · 11/04/2026
Play better draw spells Avoid stuff like Phyrexian Arena. It sounds nice drawing a card every turn but in most decks it’s a trap. Drawing it turn 8 means you don’t draw till turn 9. Who knows if you’ll even survive till then. It’s a 3 mana do nothing
100
Foxys Proxys @foxysproxys.bsky.social · 11/04/2026
For new players looking to fix their mana base in their commander decks, here’s a few rules to help you out - Good card draw - Minimum 38 lands - Count your color requirements All this will lead you to less “non-games” 1/

Who’s the best vampire commander (other than Edgar obviously) My bets on Stefan

Cards in your commander decks can fill multiple roles! The more roles a single card can fill, the more room you have for fun little pet cards Does anyone follow this template still when building a new deck? Curious to know!
100
Foxys Proxys @foxysproxys.bsky.social · 10/04/2026
25 Game Plan Cards These are synergies in your deck. Basically what your deck is built around. If you play less than 25 you won’t see enough for your strategy to come together. Without this you basically are just playing a few staples and not doing anything fun
110
Foxys Proxys @foxysproxys.bsky.social · 10/04/2026
6 Mass Disruption These don’t have to be board wipes! These are anything that hit multiple targets and affect opponents’ plans on a larger scale. 6 is the Magic number to get 1 or 2 during the game You can’t 1 for 1 the table forever
100
Foxys Proxys @foxysproxys.bsky.social · 10/04/2026
12 Targeted Removal That’s a lot! But commander is full of big threats that we need to remove so we have room to win. 12 means you can assume you’ll see a few pieces by turn 5-6 when you’ll need removal the most
100
Foxys Proxys @foxysproxys.bsky.social · 10/04/2026
12 Card Draw Again this is a minimum. You need card velocity to dig through your deck. If you don’t have the cards you need, you’re basically watching other people play 12 is the lowest number you need to do that consistently
100
Foxys Proxys @foxysproxys.bsky.social · 10/04/2026
10 Ramp Pieces This is specifically so you can reliably draw one early and play your commander ahead of curve. But you don’t want to overload this section. Often your ramp is great early and a bit of a dead draw late game
100
Foxys Proxys @foxysproxys.bsky.social · 10/04/2026
38 should be the minimum in 90% of decks This is based on percentage of times you’ll hit all your land drops during the game. Which is very important. (43 lands is actually what the math says but no one wants to play that many)
100
Foxys Proxys @foxysproxys.bsky.social · 10/04/2026
Game Knights is one of the biggest mtg channels out there And they have a pretty useful deck building template - 38 lands (minimum) - 10 Ramp - 12 card advantage - 12 Targeted Removal - 6 Mass Disruption - 25 Main plan cards Here’s how they got there:

All basics should be full art from here on out. A hill I’m willing to die on

Foxys Proxys @foxysproxys.bsky.social · 08/04/2026
Yeah I try to cut those “win more” cards too. Sometimes it’s hard to know what’s a pay off and what’s just a fun card that looks exciting

Foxys Proxys @foxysproxys.bsky.social · 08/04/2026
Literally just pay attention during your games Your table will thank you for it (so send this to someone who needs to stay off their phone during Commander)

Foxys Proxys @foxysproxys.bsky.social · 08/04/2026
This is how pro’s pull off crazy reads during games. They’ve guessed hundreds of times and learned how to think through opponent’s lines almost as well as they can
100
Foxys Proxys @foxysproxys.bsky.social · 08/04/2026
Always try to guess what your opponent is going to do on their turn Magic has too many options to be right all the time but you can slowly build predictions in your head and you will get better at it over time.
100
Foxys Proxys @foxysproxys.bsky.social · 08/04/2026
Knowing what your next turn looks like in a game of commander helps you decide if an opponent’s plays impacted you at all. Your threat assessment gets better, your sequencing is cleaner, and it just makes you a better overall player.
100
Foxys Proxys @foxysproxys.bsky.social · 08/04/2026
Planning your turn ahead of time means you can play faster Playing faster means you get to play more Magic! Which seems like a win/win to me.

Anyone else have tips on how to build redundant decks?
000
Foxys Proxys @foxysproxys.bsky.social · 07/04/2026
Of course the last two tips get even better if you play more card draw. In fact, if you do nothing else, play more card draw. like 10-15 pieces per deck.

Foxys Proxys @foxysproxys.bsky.social · 07/04/2026
Play more permanent ramp Think artifact and land ramp. To play all those cards you kept in hand you’ll need enough mana to catch up quickly. Rituals wont be helping you here
