The Horsehead Nebula (Barnard 33) and NGC 2023 - From Rolf Wahl Olsen - flic.kr/p/rhRRAz

In the Shadow of the Horsehead - Deep 26 Hour Version

I recently added a Ha filter to my collection and promptly put it to the test by soaking up a decent amount of data on the Horsehead nebula. I wanted to improve on my initial attempt on this target from 2014. One of the issues was that I'd like to show the delicate 'curtain' structure of IC 434, the bright glowing hydrogen emission that the Horsehead is silhouetted against.
This also prompted me to add more data to the LRGB channels as well in order to bring out the faint dust details better, so all together with last year's data I ended up with over 26 hours of data which I completely reprocessed and assembled into this updated version.
I'm pleased that the result has higher resolution and more depth than last years' effort. The colours are also richer and more refined and in particular the Ha curtains now stand out above and around the Horsehead.

About the image:
The Horsehead Nebula (also known as Barnard 33) is without doubt one of the most recognized and fascinating objects in the sky. This iconic feature is formed by the sharp outline of a dark dust cloud, with a remarkable likeness to a horse's head, silhouetted against a brightly glowing patch of ionized Hydrogen (IC434) that is being energized by the hard ultraviolet radiation from nearby Sigma Orionis, a...

Beyond the Lagoon: IC 4685 and Friends - From Rolf Wahl Olsen - flic.kr/p/2doqxEK

Been working on this on and off for a while since June(!), but have now finished processing the data. Here is link to full image on my site: www.rolfolsenastrophotography.com/…/Nebul…/i-2bG2Rtm

This image is a mosaic of two panels, showing a colourful and dramatic group of nebulae nestled 5,000 light-years away among the densely packed star fields in Sagittarius. The view in this image covers multiple emission and reflection nebulae as well as many intricate dark structures that obscure and redden the light from thousands of distant background stars. The picturesque scene is located just west of its much brighter and more famous neighbour, the Lagoon Nebula.
The bright magenta region that fills the majority of the right half in this image is known as IC 4685. Its broad smooth glow is broken by a starkly contrasting string of dark knots; the dark nebula Barnard 303. Near the right edge is a small intensely red Hydrogen nebula GN 18.06.6.01 and below IC 4685 lies a brighter and very colourful patch named NGC 6559. This is a combined emission and reflection nebula, where bright young stars excite surrounding Hydrogen atoms to emit a red glow, while the bright blue starlight is also reflected directly off dust particles in the cloud.
Towards the bottom left are two other bright regions; the softly glowing IC 1274 and the brighter and more defined IC 1275 which is another combined emission and reflection nebula. Here the common bubble-like structure of these regions is more ea...

Hubble Takes Flight with the Toucan and the Cluster - From Goddard Space Flight Center - flic.kr/p/MViact

It may be famous for hosting spectacular sights such as the Tucana Dwarf Galaxy and 47 Tucanae (heic1510), the second brightest globular cluster in the night sky, but the southern constellation of Tucana (The Toucan) also possesses a variety of unsung cosmic beauties.

One such beauty is NGC 299, an open star cluster located within the Small Magellanic Cloud just under 200,000 light-years away. Open clusters such as this are collections of stars weakly bound by the shackles of gravity, all of which formed from the same massive molecular cloud of gas and dust. Because of this, all the stars have the same age and composition, but vary in their mass because they formed at different positions within the cloud.

This unique property not only ensures a spectacular sight when viewed through a sophisticated instrument attached to a telescope such as Hubble’s Advanced Camera for Surveys, but gives astronomers a cosmic laboratory in which to study the formation and evolution of stars — a process that is thought to depend strongly on a star’s mass.

Interstellar Origins: The Great Orion Nebula and The Running Man - From Rolf Wahl Olsen - flic.kr/p/UgDY8f

This image is centered on the dusty clouds between the Orion Nebula (Messier 42) and the Running Man Nebula (Sharpless 279) and is a mosaic of two images taken on separate nights in February 2017

To the right is the bright Orion Nebula, the closest stellar factory to us, located some 1350 light-years away in the constellation Orion. Here new stars are born out of the dense clouds of gas and dust, and the youngest and brightest stars that we see now are only between 10,000 and a few hundred thousand years old. The nebula is illuminated primarily by the four bright young stars visible in the centre, which form a small cluster called the Trapezium. The radiation pressure from these young stars have sculpted a vast cavity with brightly coloured glowing walls that we see from Earth as the familiar shape of the Orion Nebula.

The nebula is also known as Messier 42 or NGC 1976 and is one of the brightest nebulae in the sky, easily visible just south of Orion's Belt using even the smallest binoculars. It is approximately 24 light years across and forms part of the much larger Orion Molecular Cloud Complex - a huge clump of very cold gas that has a total mass of about 2000 times that of the Sun. The gas from this cloud slowly collapses due to gravity and stars are formed. Whenever a bright new star is formed, its strong light evaporates the opaque gaseous surroundings it formed from, thus allowing us to see it. The Orion Molecular Cloud Complex extends far beyond the bounds of t...

IC10 Optical and X-rays - From Judy Schmidt (geckzilla.bsky.social) - flic.kr/p/YgaWzG

When I realized there was Chandra data for this too, I wanted to make a version that included it.
Hubble-only version is here: flic.kr/p/XgFVxh
Chandra-only version is here: flic.kr/p/XWLQob

There's also an informative article at the Chandra website if you'd like to know why exactly there are objects in this galaxy emitting x-rays. See it here: chandra.harvard.edu/photo/2017/ic10/

I used the same six pointings the Chandra people used in their gallery image.

Red: ACS/WFC F814W + WFPC2 F656N
Green: ACS/WFC F606W
Blue: ACS/WFC F435W
Bright Blue-Violet: X-rays

North is NOT up. It is 59.8° clockwise from up.
