Our emus are all accounted for, thankfully!

He has! We plan to publish more of his work sometime soon, he has a lot of ASMR of just loafing and enjoying the sun and the clouds going by!

They are super curious and inquisitive birds, they do that for fun vs food, a lot like the kea parrots in NZ. I know it can be very frustrating for anyone having to deal with the damage (it's a conflict area our center would like to research and help out with!)

The ravens would absolutely agree with you, more snacks are always needed!

Stepping up for science… and snacks. Our ravens, Yami and Moku, were too eager to get on the scale one at a time. Daily checks are an important part of the care of all of our ambassadors, but for the ravens they're just eager to grab a treat and get back to mischief! 🪶

Absolutely! I'm always happy to see them fiesty and disgruntled (as they should be!)

That's a great question! Its not feathers that generally protect birds from the sun so much as gadusol, a natural 'sunscreen' they produce in their blood to block UV rays :) It's why bare faced birds like vultures or turkeys dont get sunburn even all day direct in the rays!

So cute! I love the babies, especially when theyre old enough to fly after and bug their beleaguered parents but utterly incapable of putting food into their own mouths yet. Yell at the food, but dont try to actually eat it!

I feel like blue jays never need a real reason to scream, screaming is just the norm and a constant (bald or not, always yelling!)

Foxfeather Zenkova @foxfeather.bsky.social · 21/09/2026

It's like a "If you don't love me at my X you dont deserve me at my Y" post, bluejay edition!

This is so cool! I wouldnt be able to attend this year but would be interested for the future. I am not allowing myself any new hobbies (at all, I need -10 hobbies) but wool/spinning have always been of big interest to me. Likely it would be a retirement project (if i'm so lucky) but so tempting!

I get lots of calls this time of year from people worried about their bald backyard birds. It's always good to check with your local rehabbers to see if a bird needs help, but this temporary condition resolves quickly and fresh new feathers come in within a matter of a few weeks. 🪶

Bald is beautiful! And normal for blue jays (and cardinals) this time of year. Bluey is rocking the 'catastrophic molt' look, dropping all her head feathers at once. This happens in late summer, coinciding with the availability of fatty seeds and food abundance, allowing them to be replaced fast.

Aww, I thought of you guys and your wanting sheep when I watched it. We have been pondering getting a few hair sheep to replace the rental goats as weedwhackers, would love wool sheep but zero time to sheet and I heard its really hard to get a pro to do just a few.

Absolutely! Pin banners, cork boards, and shadow boxes/framing are the most common I've seen and they look super nice that way! (Photos folks have shared with us)

I am not 100% surprised loon would be at the top, especially since we're from Minnesota and it's our state bird and a powerful symbol. Hoatzin is a huge surprise, though, I thought it might not be popular as so many people aren't familiar with them!

I'm so happy we were able to add those two this year, I was surprised (and very happy!) to see that hoatzin is leading with the #2 spot in our poll for peoples' favorite birds this year!

I'm super excited about that one, we plan some translucent and half-raised metal effects in the wings to try to capture the light going through feathers look (like we did before with the bat), I think it will look really stunning!
