Spring Training 1935: Johnny Mize was a temporary Red. He hit some monster blasts, but the Reds sent him back to the Cards before Opening Day as damaged goods. The rest is history. Read it in "Big Cat." @univnebpress.bsky.social @bballhist.bsky.social @baseballhall.org @twibhistory.bsky.social #Reds

I asked Col. Bruce Hampton to describe Leftover Salmon (the band, not the meal) in two words and he said, "Zambi incarnate." He was right on. Author Tim Newby totally captures the band in this classic, which belongs on the bookshelf of every music lover. Get it here: rowman.com/ISBN/9781538...!

During a Zoom meeting, be sure to nod occasionally while taking notes, so as to appear "engaged." And if someone later asks to borrow your notes, simply tell them, "oh, those were just for me, you know, for context," or even better, "I'm not your personal stenographer, take your own damn notes."

Best review I can possibly receive for "Big Cat" comes from the son of Big Cat, Jim Mize. Here he is with a copy of the book with filmmaker Hal Jacobs (who is making a documentary based on the book). @univnebpress.bsky.social @bballhist.bsky.social @baseballhall.bsky.social

Stuck in a depressing, dead end job that you hate with an old-fashioned, shitty briefcase? Turn your life around and take flight! The possibilities are finite! (Disclaimer: Metal claws, talons, bat wings, briefcase, and badly drawn incongruous rocket sold separately).

Heard any good books lately? Let me suggest "Big Cat," which just made its audiobook debut. Now you can get the beautiful hardcover edition, or the audio version, which you can listen to on your smoking break. It's the true life baseball adventure story of Baseball Hall of Famer Johnny Mize.
