The Will to Knowledge | Special Issue of Vesper (2026)
The Will to Knowledge | Vesper, Spring–Summer 2026 Editorial: Sara Marini, Angela Mengoni, The Will to Knowledge Fifty years ago, Michel Foucault, in La volonté de savoir (1976), described how the mechanisms of the examination of conscience belonging to the pastoral tradition of the 17th century progressively extended to all areas of society, marking the threshold of a biopolitical modernity. Here, the ‘will to knowledge’ is not the subject’s drive for research, but the injunction to bring into the field of knowledge-power those borderline domains of life that had been previously excluded from it: death, birth, sexuality.

Roberto Mordacci, Respect and Power The Foundations of Critical Ethics and Politics, Routledge, 2025 Description This book presents a historically informed, theoretically systematic, and critically articulated theory of respect that challenges many of the presuppositions of the current debate in ethics and politics. It develops a theory of respect as the rule of power relations, which draws connections between Kant’s critical philosophy and Critical Theory.

Tony Bennett, Habit’s Pathways: Guiding Repetition, Governing Conduct, Contested Interruptions. Topoi. An International Review of Philosophy (2025). Abstract Drawing principally on the work of Michel Foucault, this paper considers how the relations between habit and repetition have been construed in the exercise of different forms of power: disciplinary, pastoral, governmental, and algorithmic, for example. It does so by reviewing a range of the pathway metaphors that abound in the literature on habit, paying particular attention to how these differ in their interpretation of habit’s relations to repetition and the role they accord different authorities – theological, philosophical, psychological, sociological – in guiding the conduct of different social agents along the pathways that those authorities superintend.

Drawing from Bakhtin, Derrida, Foucault, Glissant, and Morton, this work constructs an interdisciplinary topology where narrative is displaced by semiotic proliferation.

Michaela Fišerová, Jakub Mácha (eds.), Metaphysics and Aesthetics of Decoration Ornamental Thinking, Routledge, 2026. This volume offers a fresh and timely contribution to current discussions of ornamentation, repetition, and affect in aesthetics and philosophy. It provides new insights into how ornamentation shapes artistic, philosophical, and social practices, positioning it as a dynamic force in contemporary thought. Through interdisciplinary essays by leading scholars, the volume interrogates ornamentation’s role in structuring metaphysics, aesthetics, and interspecies relations.

It explores the intersections between this becoming and the development of the concepts of life, organism, and technics. It seeks to introduce universal machinism as a metaphysical foundation with specific ethical and political implications. A machinic ontology proposes that the whole has no inside, the body has no head, a society needs no leader, and the brain has no center.

Mark K. George, How Deuteronomy Created “Israel” Technologies of the Self, Government, and Writing (2026)
Mark K. George, How Deuteronomy Created "Israel" Technologies of the Self, Government, and Writing, Routledge, 2026 Description In this book, Mark K. George argues that the goal of Deuteronomy is not merely to provide ancient Judah with another set of laws but to write “Israel” itself into existence. He reads Deuteronomy as a manual for self‑definition with two key aspects: being an Israelite means recognizing oneself as a subject under Yahweh’s control, and Deuteronomy is the handbook of techniques by which one monitors oneself to become Israel.

Marita Rainsborough, Foucault Today. New Perspectives in Philosophy and Cultural Studies, . 2025 Michel Foucault is considered one of the most important philosophers of the 20th century. Marita Rainsborough examines the current relevance of his work with reference to the post- and decolonial theories of Achille Mbembe, Homi Bhabha and Walter D. Mignolo in a global context. She incorporates the philosophy of Judith Butler and Byung-Chul Han as well as New Realism into the critical reading of Foucault, and emphasises the philosophical references to Bloch and Kant that have so far been neglected in his reception.

Doris Brothers, Jon Sletvold, Psychoanalytic Explorations of Embodied Relational Knowing, Routledge, 2026 Publicity flyer PDF Description This book offers groundbreaking insights into relational theory, exploring the patient’s and the analyst’s longings to know, be known and not known in psychoanalytic relationships, and the embodied nature of the healing process. Recognition of the patient’s unknowable uniqueness, which is not fully accessible by means of empathy, is shown to promote more ethical therapeutic practices.

A.J.A. Woods, Why the Right Blames the Frankfurt School for the Decline of the West, Verso, 2026 The definitive history of a dangerous right-wing conspiracy theory “Cultural Marxism” is one of the far right’s favorite buzzwords. But despite its currency, the meaning and origins of the term are rarely investigated. This book uncovers the bizarre story of the cult leaders, right-wing intellectuals, and White House officials who believe a coterie of left-wing scholars and students is plotting to undermine Western civilization.
