Another day, another NSF announcement about funding AI instead of science.

Lenny from the Simpsons replacing a sign saying "0" with another sign that also says "0" as a part of a larger sign that reads, "0 days without email from NSF about AI". implicit here is that the meme author wished to say "fucking AI" but the text became too small and also I'm not sure NSF is funding people to literally fuck AI, but who even knows anymore.

In April of 2023 I was in Perth for work during an eclipse and we just watched the ground to see it!

Not that the thumbnail of a strat column isn't great, but here's some fossil photos. The fossil in A is the oldest known eukaryote so far, from 702 meters depth in a drillcore from Northern Territory, Australia

photos of organic-walled microfossils. Mostly circular and flattened, some of the fossils show that they are made of tiny plates around the outside of a cell, some show stripy texture and some have little projections from their exterior. One of the fossils is a multicellular filament. Most of the fossils are between 20 and 150 microns across (100 microns is a tenth of a millimeter) and one of the fossils is several hundred microns long- this species is known to get longer than a millimeter. The point of the image is to show the varied types of fossils that are found in even the oldest known assemblages of eukaryotes.

I never have seen nasturtium with a star shaped flower!? This little guy popped up in the garden with especially narrow petals. How unusual is it for a new variety to arise in this plant family?
