I realised I had a very emotional response to the African landscapes we visited today. It brought to mind the Out of Africa book, something I have not thought of for years but it came to mind today. Something about the light and vegetation caught at me.

Do folk think these look like beach or fluvially derived deposits? It's part of what we think is a raised beach deposit we are excavating...

Penultimate day in Puglia and I am very sad to go home on Saturday. We've had a wonderful 3 week break. I could have happily have stayed another week but work becons back and then fieldwork. So, still plenty to look forward to! Today we had another amazing day at this beach. No people due to wind!

Visited Maratea yesterday. View across sea to the Golfo di Policloro. It's beautifully green down here and rather quiet as we are off the tourist route.

I love these images from Peter Henry Emerson, Life and Landscape on the Norfolk Broads 1885–86, some of the earliest photos of this landscape. It gives a real sense of place and a way of life that we no longer recognise or very much know about.

This is Tiddy Mun - a strange creature that comes from the Lincolnshire wetlands. It casts a spell on fen-landers when drainage happens, warning of diseases & illness that follows land reclamation and drainage. Its the only example of an environmentally conscious mythical creature I am aware of.

A favourite photo of British uplands. Cumbria, bogland. After a long time away from working on boglands of c.10 years or more I have been thinking more and more of these places again. It coincides with moving to Scotland. Perhaps not a surprise on reflection!
