March was intense: Mar 6 my back gave out on me and ended up in the ER. Most of Mar spent unable to work. My wife, pals, and fam moved the store on Mar 26. Mar 29 back in the ER and admitted. Mar 30 the Lucy Dacus event. I was out in time for a great RSD 4/12. Listening event for Frostbyt3 on 4/19.

This album is always on or near my turntable. As my infant eyes began to make out shapes and faces, this album was one of the first things I saw. There wasnt a day when I didnt know every track on this lp. Roberta Flack serenaded me in utero, and this album played throughout our house ever since.

How the hell does Hendrix’ Axis: Bold as Love album STILL sound ahead of its time 58 years after its release?

my personal pick for a Valentine’s Day spin witcho boo… Tina Brooks was one of the great tenor players in that era of “the greats”. This session which shamefully sat on Blue Note’s shelf until 1980, has a killer lineup w Lee Morgan, Sonny Clark, Watkins, and a very chill Art Blakey.

(*def not a BHM post.) the late 90s was not a great time for me. unhealthy relationships and my dad passing away. Shania Twain’s Come on Over dropped soon after dad died in 97 and became my comfort album. Anyone else have an unlikely comfort record or artist?

when your family IS Black History: my dad James Cephas was the owner of King James Records, a Black-owned record store in West Philly from 1967-1997. Our first home was the apt above the OG store. I was raised there and learned everything behind that counter.

Feb 1967. This album started being played in the Haight. Jefferson Airplane’s psychedelic manifesto. A few months later, the Summer of Love and the revolution began to take shape. Whats on your revolution playlist?? I’ll be posting more of my soundtrack throughout today…

Yes, you can love Young Americans! Cleaning and testing this copy yesterday…I feel like folks want to gravitate towards his more avant garde work like Low and are missing the mastery of this album. Its a captivating soul record.

flipping through the jazz section here (its my fav place in the store) and stumbled across this! y’all. First off…Kenny Burrell is everything. But this set from 1960, beautifully reissued by Verve w Third Man, is absolutely stunning. Legends Roy Haynes and Richard Davis round out the trio here.
