The year begins with fieldwork: at Unterlüß, Harz & Göttinger Wald we installed mercury passive samplers that will record air Hg concentrations at various forest heights over three months. Coupled with leaf, soil & water samples, we track mercury input pathways into the ecosystem. 📷hair ice on wood

At Night of Science Göttingen, FoResLab showed how we measure CO₂ uptake in forests, offered VR field research insights, and let visitors design their own forest with our optimization tool. Thanks to all who joined and discussed the future of our forests! @bioclimatology.bsky.social

🌳💬Ann-Kathrin Kößler and @stangenberg.bsky.social (Leibniz University Hannover) analyze key stakeholders and their interests in resilient forests in Lower Saxony. Using interviews, workshops, and experiments, they develop evidence-based strategies to strengthen societal support and cooperation.

Forests in a Warm World: Understanding the Effects of Climate Change and Taking Action - This was the topic presented by @bioclimatology.bsky.social and FoResLab at the Children's University. From experiments and examples, childrens were able to learn about climate change and its effects on forests.

Forests provide habitats and economic resources, requiring a balance between ecological and economic resilience. Researchers from UGOE develop indicators to assess economic resilience and analyse how management affects stability. Simulations will guide sustainable forest management.

Frequent droughts and climate extremes have increased transpirational stress and reduced forest cooling in Central Europe. Kanishka Mallick (LIST) uses thermal remote sensing to map water stress in Lower Saxony, aiming for a real-time, publicly available monitoring system for Germany.

💻🌳In SP 8, researchers at the Julius Kühn Institute are developing digital twins of forests linking real forest data with simulation models in real time. These digital twins will make it possible to test and evaluate different management strategies under future climate conditions. #forestresilience

🛰️🌳In view of increasing climate extremes, Paul Magdon and Svenja Dobelmann (HAWK) are developing a concept to use remote sensing data to record key indicators such as tree species mix, structure and vitality over large areas and to spatially analyse the resilience of forests. #forestresilience

💧🌲In subproject 6, a Team from the NW-FVA investigates the processes that lead to a change in water services following disturbance. The focus is on the conversion of spruce stands into beech forests. Their results will assess forest ecosystem resilience and be valuable for drinking water management.

Dominik Seidel and Sarah Kabache (UGOE) investigate the relationship between structure and potential resilience by linking the amount of energy emitted by a forest to its structure. A greater absorption of energy in the forest ecosystem is assumed to lead to increased resilience. #forestresilience

☀️🌧️🌬️ In subproject 4, Alexander Knohl and Simon Drollinger (UGOE) are developing H₂O and CO₂ flux-based indicators to measure the resilience of forests to climate extremes. The aim is to combine them with other indicators to create a multidimensional resilience indicator. #forestresilience

Harald Biester and Lina Oskamp (TUBS) examine how changes in forest cover, from spruce monocultures to mixed/beech forests, affect litter, soil composition and water quality in drainage systems. They analyse nutrient and trace element levels, focusing on heavy metals & mercury.🌲🌳 #forestresilience

Matthias Beyer & Steffen Dohmen (TUBS) aim to provide high-resolution, site-specific forest water balance estimates by monitoring below-ground and above-canopy water status and fluxes, assessing mixed forest resilience, and enabling rigorous quantification of soil-plant water balance relationships.

In subproject 1, Christian Ammer & Christina Hackmann (U Göttingen) will study how beech forests with different structures respond to climatic extremes like droughts. They focus on tree growth and water balance, using in situ measurements (sap flow sensors, dendrometers) and retrospective 13C data.

We kicked-off our climate future lab #FoResLab this month! In 13 subprojects, we will investigate how forests can be made resilient to climate change under current and future conditions. It was great getting to know each other at the meeting and discussing the next steps.
