The Winter Olympics officially kicked off in Milano & Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy. It has been 70 years since Cortina first held the Winter Games, & February temperatures have warmed 6.4F since then. The area now sees 41 fewer days below freezing than when the Games were first held there in 1956. (1/2)

Weather word of the week: frost quakes. Frost quakes can occur when water in the soil freezes, expands, and cracks under pressure. This has happened recently in portions of Kentucky and Tennessee in the wake of the recent winter storm. This graphic from NWS Louisville explains more. #wx #weather

Weather word(s) of the week: freezing rain and sleet. There are several forms of winter precipitation, and sometimes it is hard to tell the difference. Freezing rain is liquid rain that freezes on contact with a surface. Sleet is rain that freezes into ice pellets before reaching the ground.

A study led by the European Severe Storms Laboratory provides the first comprehensive global analysis of very large hail. The study found that northern Argentina was the global hotspot for very large hail events, followed by Uruguay, Paraguay, southern Brazil, the U.S. Great Plains, & South Africa.

Weather word of the week: graupel. Graupel are soft, small pellets formed when supercooled water droplets (at a temperature below 32°F) freeze onto a snow crystal, a process called riming. If the riming is particularly intense, the rimed snow crystal can grow to an appreciable size. - NOAA

Weather word of the week: snow squall. Snow squalls, often associated with strong cold fronts, are a key wintertime weather hazard. They move in and out quickly, & typically don’t last long. The sudden white-out conditions combined with falling temperatures produce icy roads in just a few minutes.
