Instead, it gives people structured practice in expressing the empathy they already feel. If AI is going to be part of our emotional lives, perhaps its real measure is whether it leaves us better at showing up for the people around us. arxiv.org/abs/2603.15245

Practicing with Language Models Cultivates Human Empathic Communication
Empathy is central to human connection, yet people often struggle to express it effectively. In blinded evaluations, large language models (LLMs) generate responses that are often judged more…

Earlier research has shown that AI-written responses are often judged more empathic than human-written ones. This study asks a different question: can AI help us communicate empathy better to each other? As the authors note, their approach does not replace human empathy with artificial empathy.

Brief personalized feedback from an AI coach significantly improved how people expressed empathy. They encouraged their partners to share more, validated emotions more often, and gave less unsolicited advice. Their responses also did not become homogeneous or AI-like.

People's self-reported empathy showed essentially no relationship to how well they actually communicated it. Participants also consistently overestimated themselves. 87% said they showed understanding "quite a bit" or "very much," but AI evaluators rated only 9% as doing so effectively.

Convenience isn't the same as growth. Learning depends on patience, effort, and asking a real person for help, and AI should be designed to support those things rather than replace them.

The author recommends keeping the warmth while building the user's own ability to cope. The paper also argues that safety reviews of companion chatbots should go beyond harmful content and crisis handling.

The key takeaway: how people felt right after the conversation didn't separate these two response styles. The differences only appeared once people had to manage without the AI. The paper argues that companion chatbots shouldn't be judged solely on warmth, empathy, satisfaction, or reuse.

Participants rated both styles similarly on warmth, empathy, and helpfulness. But in a later task without the AI, the first group recovered better and wrote stronger coping strategies. The reassurance group came away feeling a greater need for the AI and more intent to rely on it.

In a randomized experiment, adults talked through a recent, mildly upsetting event with an AI companion. One style helped them name the emotion, see the situation differently, and choose their own next step. The other offered warm reassurance and invited them to come back to the AI for comfort.

AI that engages people across that range needs to know how to respond well at any point. Measuring that is essential for building AI that supports people's long-term well-being.

It scores behaviors like safety, seeking context, preserving user agency, and giving actionable guidance when appropriate. This is important because, as the American Psychological Association's CEO notes, mental health exists on a continuum, from flourishing to everyday stress to acute crisis.

Findings like these are a reminder that some of AI's most important effects unfold over time and outside the chat window, in how we relate to the people around us.

And by the end of the five days, participants were more comfortable seeking personal advice from the AI than from friends, acquaintances, or experts such as therapists.

How the AI was personalised still mattered: people talking to the memory-based model shared more personal information in their conversations and rated it as less creepy than the non-personalised version.

In all three versions, people rated the AI as increasingly competent and useful over time and felt increasingly close to it, and the researchers found these shifts were driven mainly by repeated use rather than by personalisation itself.
