Today I drove lazily through Noe Valley and Castro Street, visiting bookstores. There was a marvellous sweetness in the air of San Francisco, bits of idle time and sparkling azure sky dropping around like tinsel. It was an afternoon stolen from the world. (1988)

Later I had a phone conversation with Hal, who was returning from Palo Alto where he had met with Lockheed physicists, including Blackburn. He told me his super-electron project was “ready to go big time.”

Old Mr. Hopkins has given us precious details about his life as a proper Contactee: he always sleeps naked, with all the lights on.

Another sign of changing times is the strange wind that destabilizes the denizens of New Age research. Janine is sad to witness the desertion of many friends as fine people with good minds spin away from reality. It’s a general phenomenon...

My thesis committee met today to hear my defense of my dissertation project. They gave me the green light. Mittman said I had attacked a very tough problem but he felt my approach was correct.

This trip to the redwoods was perfect. Tonight, by fair seeing, I was able to observe Saturn’s rings (on edge at the moment, only a thin line), the Pleiades, and the Andromeda nebula.

Now Hal’s friend is panicking. His house has been burglarized several times. He was studying an alleged energy machine, “Johnson’s motor.” All his models have been taken apart by visitors who made no effort to be discreet. Neighbors have seen the men driving away. (1982)

We walked back to his apartment and watched the new Twilight Zone. I expressed my dismay at the Jack Anderson article that exposed Grill Flame. Ingo told me the leak came from a member of the National Security Council.

As the laughter subsided Art asked Anton how sales of his book were doing. “Splendid,” he answered. “Nice Christian kids have been caught sneaking into a church to burn copies of my Satanic Bible, hoping to exorcize me. Think of the publicity!” (1970)

The larger world, too, has suddenly swiveled into an uncertain future. The crisis with Iraq spells war before Christmas. The Soviet empire has caved in, Germany is reuniting. History is gathering a funeral wreath for the grave of the Millennium. (1990)

"Ah merde, I expected this from the beginning, that you would split again! This country, which is the smartest in the world at the basic level of the average plumber, the farmer, the mailman, has managed to acquire the most pretentious, cynical and rotten elite one can imagine." (1968)

A French newspaper someone had left in the plane that brought us home contained a very curious report: two young electronic technicians have died on a hilltop near Rio de Janeiro while waiting for a flying saucer they claimed to have contacted.

Maman had valiantly organized a dinner at La Hucherie last night. Gabriel came over with Jeannine. Our mother gave us her recollections from the opening days of the Second World War: I was 8 months old when we left Pontoise.

Our sheet metal contractor came over to look at our plans. When he found out we were building an observatory he asked, “You believe there’s life up there? I’ve seen strange things… I’ve spent several years in the Forest Service. And my dad has seen a saucer that had landed next to a road.” (1987)

It's not a pretty sight, this meeting of computer scientists. The rooms of the Conrad Hilton are filled with frail geeks with shrill voices and fat librarians in shapeless gray dresses:

We left the medieval town, driving towards Padirac and Rocamadour. The rain came down in buckets, bringing back memories of that France of narrow roads I had so often seen through blurred windshields, little dead towns engulfed in blackness, bleak landscapes. (1991)

We went over to Mrs. Epperson's house on Citrus street. I drew aside Reverend Cruttwell who told me Papuan Aborigines had a tradition stating that mankind came from the sky. The sightings of 1959 with Father Gill have not caused significant changes in their beliefs. (1975)

The most beautiful sound I have ever heard is the pure and highly musical hum of the memory drum of the IBM 650 when the computer dies. All power goes out. The motors are still. The console lights stop blinking and of course the program is lost.

For my birthday (I am 52 today) we had lunch in a modern château with butter-colored walls and ugly modern paintings of red lobsters and green apples. After Périgueux we found winding roads under slanted rocks, caves everywhere, the peaceful Vézère, proud castles on every hill.

What are Allen’s chances of survival? Fred tells me the tumor is a glioma, a tumor of nerve cells, located in the left posterior temporal lobe, 5 cm in diameter. “They can probably remove most of it,” he said, “but the edges of such tumors remain active, and they are ill-defined.
