In 1962, Fannie Lou Hamer was one of the 2 permitted out of 17 Black people who attempted to register to vote in Mississippi. For that act of bravery, she was fired from her job and forced off the plantation she had called home. As we prepare to vote this election cycle, let’s honor her legacy. 🗳️

Though Nat Turner’s life was short, his courage and leadership inspired many enslaved people to continue fighting for liberation and to make their voices heard in a time when their humanity was systematically denied. Happy Birthday, Nat Turner! 🤎

💡 Did you know that 45-50% of Black and Latinx U.S. adults performed at Level 1 in literacy in 2023? These disparities should not be interpreted as evidence of racial differences in ability. They reflect unequal access. 🚨 Remember to support your local libraries and thrift stores!🚨

Our food system reflects the same structures of oppression that shape our world: racism, colonialism, capitalism, worker exploitation, and more. When communities are denied access to food, telling people to "go vegan," without advocating for equality ignores centuries of violent discrimination.

Many people are taught to see mountain lions only as something to fear. But in reality, these cats shape entire food webs! ♻️✨ This Mountain Lion Day, let us remember that animals do not need to provide us with $ value, entertainment, or convenience to humans in order to deserve safety and liberty.
We are often taught to fear what we can not exploit. That fear can make it easier for humans to naturally see predators as disposable.

But, mountain lions are more than predators to fear. They influence the entire food web below them.Mountain lions help set the rhythm for our coastal ecosystems.

Deer are their primary food source, and their presence can keep deer from trampling native plants, such as
coastal live oaks!

With less deer, native plants have more opportunity to recover and grow, while nutrients from their remains return to the soil.A single feeding from a mountain lion supports many coastal animals and ecosystems.

What a mountain lion leaves behind can feed several coastal birds and small animals.

They also influence how other predators (coyotes, bobcats, etc.) move through the landscape, shaping an entire food system!Humans often demonize animals we can not control, exploit, or benefit from financially.

But, animals do not need to provide humans with benefit to deserve safety, and liberty.

Protecting animals, including predators means sustaining the overall ecosystem we all call home.

Did you know that May is National Strawberry Month? ⏰️ An average workday for a strawberry picker in the U.S. can be anywhere from 8-14 hours. ‼️ We can promote social justice and equality by supporting farms that value and respect their workers. Learn more about farm workers at foodispower.org
Strawberries are one of the most labor-intensive crops to grow.

The farm workers who pick them make below poverty wages.

Let's talk about it.

Pictured is an arrow pointing to the next slide, with farm workers picking strawberries in the background, with a photo of a typical box of strawberries picked.Strawberries are among the most labor-intensive crops in U.S. agriculture, especially in California, which produces roughly 90% of the nation’s strawberries, even in extreme summer heat.

Harvesting strawberries requires farmers to bend at the waist for 8 to 10 hours a day contributing to chronic injuries. Pay is frequently structured on a piece-rate system, meaning workers are paid per box picked. When you can, buying certified organic produce can help reduce the likelihood that farmworkers were exposed to harmful synthetic pesticides and other toxic agricultural chemicals.

Including farm workers’ rights, safety protections, and fair wages in your food justice and environmental advocacy ensures the people who harvest our food are not left out of the conversation.Food Empowerment Project knows that food justice requires farm worker justice. This advocacy is rooted in our core mission. Farm workers deserve our support.

Follow F.E.P. to join the right for farm worker justice.

Because our food choices can change the world!
