The chronic stress of anticipatory fear can have significant negative effects on stalking survivors' bodies and minds, both in the short-term and long-term. Mental health and healthcare professionals must learn to identify stalking and address survivor needs, both during and after the stalking.

Too often, stalking victims are told to "just ignore" or "walk away" from offenders as if that will make the stalker stop their contact. While every situation is different, effective safety planning includes anticipating the stalker's reaction(s) and recognizing the risk of escalation.
