"Papers please" would actually be a step up from where we're at right now. ICE seems to care neither about documentation nor even the appearance of decency. They're just straight up kidnapping brown people.

Sometimes it's fun to go back to old #astrophotography data with new tricks. There was so much color hiding in Rho Ophiuchi that my previous processing attempts missed. Best picture I've ever taken and it continues to give. 📷🔭

Astrophotography is really great if you grew up on early computers and miss clicking a button and waiting on an INCREDIBLY long process, often with no progress bar.

It looks like it's all that's holding that erlenmeyer flask up, so you might have one of these kinds of situations when cleaning up. Careful!

Pictured: A permanent ban from all of Reddit. "Harassment" they say. I think the Reddit admins need a fucking dictionary.
It's stochastic terrorism, and the fact that it's not illegal means the laws are broken.

Edit: cool, all the lawyers are compromised and untrustworthy. This treasonous violent madman's reign cannot be settled through the courts. Noted.

Wondering why no one likes your posts anymore, even among your friends? It's because @jay.bsky.team and team have decided to hide a huge amount of content from all of our feeds by default. Here's how to turn it off. First go to the hamburger menu in the upper left corner

To be fair, LLMs could be applied to similarly virtuous uses, they're just tools and most tools are morally neutral. The problem is that a) people aren't using the tools virtuously and b) the tools weren't built virtuously, because c) capitalism ruins everything it touches.

Meet our newest patient here at the Alaska Raptor Center, a Northern Pygmy Owl named King Owlbert by his rescuers. Owlbert arrived with a drooping wing, making flight difficult. We’ve given him a supportive wing wrap, plenty of tasty mice, and time to heal. #small #owls #adorable

Hey parents, are you in the market for a school with integrity? Pick the school in your district with the highest number of books in their library that these dickweeds want to ban and send your kids there. Nice of them to give us this resource.

I've found exactly one ever, and it was living in this hollow dead tree in Northern Nevada. Only chanced on it because a friend accidentally disturbed its home. It was pure luck, I have no advice to give.

Yeah but you and I both know that when that small county runs short of money they'll choose to fund the police and cut social programs instead. Their bad behavior never hurts them, and in many cases actually rewards them directly. Perverse incentives are perverse.

Oh is every textbook suddenly available as an audiobook? What's that? It takes a huge amount of labor and effort at great cost to create one when a piece of software can do an adequate job of reading a pdf to you? You're a disgrace to your profession. You're disgusting and I'm done with you.

I never said any of that? They're tools. I don't like how they were made and they have flaws like all tools, but they're tools and we have them now and we'd be fools not to use them for the things they actually do well where there are no ethical concerns.

Now I know you don't know what you're talking about. Language is literally the only thing LLMs do well. 99% of the idiocy I see is people trying to make a language model do math or use logic when all it actually knows is language.

They *can* help lock in the information, if that's one of the ways you learn. If not, doing that work by hand is unnecessary, and if that task is made difficult by a disability, then what? Just lay down and die? No education for those who need special tools or methods? You're an extremist.

David Perry @focusdisorder.bsky.social · 02/11/2025
I'm just a software developer, what do I know about the direction the software development industry is moving in? Clearly the college professors who haven't engaged with new technology in a decade are the experts here. 🙄

And yet, here I am, the partner of a dyslexic person who is having their textbooks read to them by AI, hearing that she's cheating and should be thrown out of school.
200
David Perry @focusdisorder.bsky.social · 02/11/2025
It's also not like every AI tool is clearly labeled. A bunch of students got wrongfully flagged when grammarly quietly switched from traditional grammar checking to AI-based systems, and no one running a document they wrote through a grammar checker is cheating.
000
David Perry @focusdisorder.bsky.social · 02/11/2025
I'm not a fan of the current landscape either. I especially don't like how the tools were built. But a blanket ban is just taking tools away from students, some of which might actually help them learn. And don't get me started on the subset of those tools that disproportionately help the disabled.
200
David Perry @focusdisorder.bsky.social · 02/11/2025
That's a terrible take. There are so many ways to use AI that aren't cheating and so many tools are quietly becoming AI on the backend. Most grammar checking tools, for example, have gone AI now, and AI can also generate flash cards from your notes to help you study. It's not 100% plagiarism.

David Perry @focusdisorder.bsky.social · 02/11/2025
They're bullshit snake oil services that don't actually work as advertised and false positives from these tools ruin innocent people without cause. If they worked but were built in unethical ways we'd have a conversation here, but they straight up do not work.

I've always known that there was a spectrum of good, bad, and neutral people but for a long time I was pretty sure the good outnumbered the bad and it made me pretty lax. Now I think the numbers are basically even, and I see evil working hard. It's nice to see good working hard too. Thank you.

For the record, I'm not a fan either, but it's because dislikes will steer the site in a direction I don't like, not because I think that it will destroy the site entirely or that the people making decisions don't know what they're doing But that's a harder sell than "dislikes bad, admins stoopid"

David Perry @focusdisorder.bsky.social · 02/11/2025
Every social media site that isn't Twitter or BSky has a way to indicate displeasure. Facebook has it, reddit has it, YouTube has it, they're everywhere. You can dislike the change and there are valid reasons to do so, but let's not pretend it's unheard of and will destroy any site it touches.

Yeah, emission nebulae are some of my favorite things to shoot. They're usually bright targets, often colorful, and there are some huge ones nearby that mean you don't need a ton of magnification. M42 is about 12 light years across and fairly close. ~100mm lens is all you need.

David Perry @focusdisorder.bsky.social · 31/10/2025
When I go to dark sites, I shoot with various DSLRs mounted to a basic tracking rig. Neither option is terribly expensive, both come with study time attached, and the bulk of the actual work is in processing. Don't do astro if you hate post-processing, it's 99% of the gig.

David Perry @focusdisorder.bsky.social · 31/10/2025
This was mostly taken with a Dwarf II smart telescope, which some might consider cheating, but if you're under heavy light pollution, automation will be a huge help. You just need so much data to cut through that background, anything that saves time/steps is huge.

The clouds are mostly hydrogen, though they do contain some helium, oxygen, nitrogen, as well as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and a bunch of other stuff. The core has young hot stars that emit a ton of UV which ionizes the gas, causing it to glow

3 more nights worth of data added, and you can really start to see the clouds now! #Astrophotography is definitely a hobby for patient people. Super grainy, I didn't have the SNR to actually stretch it this far but I really wanted to see the clouds. 🔭📷
