we need more remakes of flawed but interesting games that have a good basis but can possibly be improved upon, like quest 64, just as an example. my personal pick would be a paranormal/horror dungeon crawler jrpg i played last year called "la place no ma." it was super flawed but i loved it.

my favorite thing about big steam sales is pretty much every old school adventure game available is around $1 USD or at least extremely discounted

a list of adventure games on my steam library: the 11th hour, bad mojo redux, californium, the cat lady, dark fall 1, day of the tentacle, harvester, the longest journey, noctropolis, police quest, primordia, the quivering, realms of the haunting, sanitarium, space quest, spud!

soma - maybe some recency bias for this as i just beat it two days ago, but it's just a very good existential sci-fi horror. the game part isn't that fun, but it has amazing atmosphere and the narrative/characters really push you through. pretty bleak overall, but there is a glimmer of hope.

a blurred line - one of the earlier rm2k games that showed the real potential of the medium. it was a time when the use of rtp graphics, and other graphics and music ripped from snes games, was the norm, but it was really about the story and systems in this one. lots of choices and mini-games

panzer dragoon zwei - it's not much to look at now but it plays smoother than most ps1 games. i'm not usually into rail shooters but this could change my mind. bosses are so much fun and it has one of my fave osts as well. this is about as cinematic as you could get for the time.

soul blazer - the most underrated entry in an underrated trilogy of action-rpgs. there's a simplicity to this one that makes it a comfort game for me to come back to every few years.

tomba - tomba is just pure joy for me. while i wouldn't call it an rpg by any stretch, it does incorporate a lot of rpg elements and rpg-esque qualities, while essentially being a mission-based non-linear platformer. it's all about finding dozens of items and interacting with quirky characters.

suikoden - hey, ignore the cover art. i think suikoden is semi-popular enough (now) to not need an intro, but it's probably the most influential game for me next to chrono trigger. there's a lot going on in these games, but it's mainly the story and characters that drive it. music is amazing too.

sanitarium - probably my most recent favorite; played it about a year ago, but it's the best game i've played in years. i love the prerendered graphics and various scenarios give it an episodic feel. great characters and overall atmosphere. it's quickly become one of my fave adventure games
