Yah, just like anti-fascists are so reactionary for not making use of child labour for all the good it can do in the world. Like it's functionally as good as working for the fascists actually. Yes exactly, the real fascists were the anti-fascists all along!!!

Socialism certainly no, but quite typical third-way PPP stuff (of course leaving aside 'quantum' itself as another vacuous hype-term).

Carney can afford to grandstand; Sánchez can afford to grandstand, being about as far away from the Russian border as one can get in Europe (which is btw just as much theatre for spanish domestic politics that you accuse other EU leaders of). The world isn't a Hollywood movie of good & bad guys.

And of course this was there with Dubya already. What was it, 'we are an empire now and we create reality'? Trump is a symptom of a much deeper malaise. And yet, with the news around Starshield, I hope naive keyboard warriors understand the hard dependencies we have here in Europe on the US.

fitted up, and rowing fourteen oars. One of the King's boats was ordered to be in readiness for me in the evening. Formerly the kings resided in the fort, where we saw a very fine diningroom, now used as an armoury. We saw 191 prisoners confined for various periods, 37 for life. The sentence of murder, unless attended by burglary, is sometimes commuted to imprisonment for life and hard labour in the fortress. Baron Wedel, who commanded here, had lately established a system of industry among these unfortunate prisoners, which was admirable. Every man works at his trade, and is provided with tools and materials, and those who have no trade are instructed, so that everyone was employed. The produce had not been offered for sale, but there was a well-stored magazine, and the Baron hoped those prisoners who were confined for short periods would return to society, capable of becoming useful members and with a little capital to begin life again in their respective trades. The money realised by the sale of goods was to be deposited in the savings bank, and every farthing turned to account. I was presented with a curious machine for conveying despatches, which

The ideal scenario was always Ukraine winning with plausible deniability on its own, which isn't much of a lie anyway with the innovations the Ukrainians have made, in order to cause a genuine & long-lasting reappraisal of these 'little-Russians' in Russia.

And if Ukraine 'won' with overt involvement from Europe, what processes would this generate in Russian society over the longer term? Russia will always be Europe's neighbor, and fueling revanchist sentiments over the longer term could end up backfiring in a decade or two.

What I cannot understand is why so many people think that Trump and the US are meaningfully different at this point. What Trump is doing now is much older US imperialism boomeranging back home!
undistinguished cultural and political antecedents. It figured
prominently, for example, in the writings of Werner Daitz, the
head of the Third Reich's Central Research Institute for National
Economic Order and Large Area Economics, and of Vichyite
apologists such as Drieu La Rochelle and Francis Delaisi.
Obviously, current Euro-integrationists draw no inspiration from
such distasteful precedents, but these disreputable forms of anti-
Americanism still lurk on the extremes of European politics and
have the capacity to impinge on the centre at times of tension and
crisis. The main home for such sentiments remains France, where
they are espoused by both pro- and anti-European forces and,
indeed, sometimes expressed at the very top. Thus, Georges-Marc
Benamou, in Le Dernier Mitterrand, quotes the late French
president as having said in his latter years: "France does not know
it, but we are at war with America. Yes, a permanent war, a vital
war, an economic war, a war without death. Yes, they are very
hard the Americans, they are voracious, they want undivided
power over the world." And at the EU summit in November 1995
in Madrid, President Chirac, himself ostensibly a conservative,
extolled the alleged victory of "European values" over the ideology
of world conservatism (led by the United States). The unhelpful,
not to say neurotic, French response to the pre-eminence of the
United States in the world is well illustrated by recent French
antics in respect of Iraq.

Yes, but NATO is just the institutional form of the protectorate-relationship, which is why politicians are always keen to frame any European initiative as not competing with NATO. Russia is a nuclear power, and there is no real Europe-wide alternative to the US nuclear deterrent.

So there is no European with the authority to credibly threaten Russia like that. This was always the US's job, and it worked during the cold war. It doesn't anymore, but the physical-military realities will take a long time to change, especially when Trump is pressuring even more vassalage.
