Very sad to report the loss of Daveigh Chase, who creeped out millions as Samara in The Ring, voiced the lead in Lilo & Stitch, and played Donnie Darko’s ornery little sister. 35. Just awful. Thanks for all your great work, Daveigh.

A verbal Trump clone—same idiotic word choice, same cadence. Pretty sure I can guess what his nose, lips, and tongue smell like. And it pushes AI even deeper into the moral abyss it occupies.

Few books have pulled me into a protagonist’s entire world like @ericlarocca.com’s Wretch. This is is a down-and-dirty, hallucinatory, no-guardrails sprint along a narrow and bumpy ledge. It bends the grieving psyche into a new shape, and so rethinks the mechanics of haunting.

Who knows—maybe it will have taken a dumb, weak, overprotected hatemonger to (finally!) kill that worthless centuries-old cult and its influence on a nation founded by white slaveholders. But the people will do this. Not some fictional sky daddy with a male pronoun. You’re welcome. 😄

Fresh drabble on @horrortree.com So I’m celebrating the arrival of Spring by giving Winter one last laugh. But don’t worry, it’s not at your expense. Fun fact: the title is a slightly altered Zombies song lyric. horrortree.com/trembling-wi...

I cannot begin to imagine the shitty attempts at dialogue, exposition, and voice—let alone a credible fuck scene—resulting from a few pushed buttons. Generative AI is yet another rock our dumb culture has turned over—“Come on out, chuds, it’s okay ‘cause I’m a loser too.”

Yeah, if someone’s appearance isn’t plot-critical I prefer to describe it in passing—e.g. “he/they lugged his/their stocky frame down the sidewalk” or “her/their neck-length hair lapped against a cheek in the breeze”.

“Hey, yeah…Have you considered asking them what’s really bothering them—I mean someone who does that has to be hurting inside… ‘Does anyone want to have coffee with you? Did you get anything for Christmas?’ Or maybe, ‘Do you have 15 minutes to talk about Cialis?’”

A mysterious old man. A sudden and inexplicable act. And from there, a small town becomes the epicenter of violence and bloodshed driven by poisonous bigotry and hate. @ericlarocca.bsky.social weaves themes of loss and trauma against the search for an ever-absent god. @clashbooks.bsky.social

OPUS is a thinker film on the subject of post-Jonestown cults. Ayo Edebiri is unafraid and compelling, and Malkovich is superb in his creepy charisma and treachery. (Think: the fantasies of Elon Musk as articulated by Right Said Fred.)

The year is approaching its 66.6% mark, and I’ll say that WEAPONS is the most engaging new flick I’ve seen. Director Zach Cregger ups the ante on themes from BARBARIAN (2022) with a narrative whose lines cross (literally?) from slow-burn batshit to full-on paroxysmal batshit. Tons of fun!

F.M. Scott's review of The Drowning Machine and Other Obsessions
5/5: This book reads like a user’s manual for extracting beautiful blooms from poisoned landscapes. Murray grabs lust, grief, and rage by their throats, yanks them into new forms, and makes them dance...

Good article! It’s naive, indeed, to deny centuries of religious evolution and ignore the things that faith, whether real or appropriated, makes people do. The novella I’ve queried to one publisher is steeped in these things. And the homework was easy because of the environment in which I grew up.

F.M. Scott @fmscottauthor.bsky.social · 14/04/2025
As a person who had religion stuffed into his young head—eventually rejecting it at age 13—I’ll say that HERETIC was a refreshing deconstruction. Grant’s performance=metal. The film’s greatest stunt, though, was that it was fair to believers too. I mean, somebody had to take the booby prize home.

Listen, I want to make something good and goddamn clear regarding trump and his cult: If you’re a “no eye for an eye” person, a “turn the other cheek” person, or other comparable idiot, GET OFF MY FEED, NOW! You are not my friend. Did people go soft on the nazis? It’s no different in principle.

Portmanteau? That’s a composite name for two people or things jammed together—i. e. Bennifer or Frankenchrist. I think the accurate term here is “anthology film”. But since you asked, I’ll go with Creepshow (1982).
