Yeah. It's a lot easier to move aa person in space than tweak the lighting or shorten the lectern. There are a lot of interviews of athletes standing on buckets or boxes on a field out of frame for the same reason.

I can't believe I'm about to defend him, but that platform was probably the venue's decision to create a more balanced shot OR because the lectern is taller than they want. That's pretty standard. We also can't see if the other guy has one.
