Morning meeting in Subiaco. Go back to office in Leederville. This is where active transport in cities is key. Quickest and cheapest way to get between two inner city areas? Bike, hands down.

We tend to get these linear, corridor long shared paths right here in Perth. Example at Midland. Where we fall down are the secondary connections linking places and then creating nicer spaces. We need to get that part right.

There is so much Singapore gets right from a city transportation perspective. This is not one. Taking over pedestrian space to have a disjointed, poorly laid out and connected “shared path” is a fudge when there is 20m of bitumen next to it which could have been used for proper infrastructure.

Screen doors, directional boarding markings, tactiles etc. Common design attributes on Seoul Metro. Most helpful function is mapping advice on which car and door number to be at for ease of transfer or exit number. Design details and user wayfinding are absolutely integral to mass transit.

There have been 443 deaths on Australian roads to the end of April. 361 were in cars or motorbikes. Most cyclist and pedestrian deaths are a result of people driving motor vehicles killing them. All trends are tracking upwards. This is a systemic issue.

If it can happen in #Perth, it can happen anywhere. Reducing transport emissions through companies making smart fleet decisions will help. Eliminating them altogether even more - State Govt fleet looking at you. If you want to know what this looks like, that's about 16,000m2 of solar panels.

Train spotting should also mean crane spotting. Without density around stations, we’re just setting up the fabric and life of this city to weaken in so many ways.

Interestingly, was looking at the 2024 Australian stats the other day so we've created a similar chart with that data to show a sort of comparison - bear in mind, this is actual, not scaled against 100,000 inhabitants. The 29 fatalities in 2024 equate to one cyclist killed per 930,000 people.

Traffic numbers down year on year on toll roads. Elasticity at play in real time. Imagine what numbers there would be if fuel hits $4/L!
Text from a running news feed in the Guardian from 9 April 2026:

Toll traffic fell in March, Transurban reports

Traffic has fallen on toll roads operated by Transurban in the wake of surging fuel prices, the company reported today.

Most of Transurban’s Sydney toll roads saw traffic decline or go backwards in the March quarter of 2026 from the same period in 2025. While the WestConnex saw trip numbers rise 10m a day, and the M5 was up 2m a day, Transurban’s other six Sydney roads lost a combined 6m trips a day.

WestConnex’s growth powered an 0.6% annual increase in average daily traffic, well below the 1.8% recorded by December and the 2.4% recorded in March 2025. Average weekend/public holiday traffic stood still, up just 0.1%.
