Second, do they pattern? Sort of! They can definitely do some of the patterning - lateral inhibition seems to be working, but they fail to correctly space their PNS out, which is exactly what we’ve predicted for years using math models.

First, their cytonemes get messed up. And they don’t move very well. This was possibly one of the most difficult experiments I’ve ever asked someone to do and my PhD student did a stellar job.

I took my kid to the National Aquarium this weekend and discovered my new favorite animal, the Cowfish. OMG THE PATTERNS! those perfect little hexagons! gorgeous fishy friend

My group studies the sensory bristle array on the thorax of the fly and one challenge of our work is quantifying the pattern. Lots of mutations affect the pattern. But how exactly do they affect it?

Two advent calendars this year. Jams and Legos. My son loves opening them both, but then completely loses interest 😂 so I spend my morning eating delicious* things and assembling small plastic animals

hey folks going to #BMES2024 Go check out my mentee's poster on Saturday! We are pretty close to publishing the results of this RNAi screen to look at PNS patterning in the fly. This work was entirely performed by undergraduate researchers. I'm super proud of their hard work!

#cellbio2023 My grad student and I are headed to Boston tomorrow for the Cell Bio meeting. She'll be presenting a poster on Monday afternoon: P2377 (board B665) Title: "Collective filopodia dynamics contribute to sensory bristle pattern formation in Drosophila".

All the nostalgia. We weren't allowed to play video games but somehow Internet was ok?

I tried looking for selfies of myself doing something non-science. Turns out, since maybe 2019, I only take pictures of 3 things: (1) the kid, (2) the cat, and (3) gels. I used to enjoy running though, and am trying to get back into a routine with it:
