A splendid evening with the daughter in Whitby. A long time since I was last there.
Evening sun reflecting on the water, with a blue sky and scattered clouds. The low sun lights up the harbour mouth and the pier/breakwater.The facade of the Whitby Seamen's Hospital Houses features a sailor, cannon, sails and a ship.

Have you tried working backwards, I.e. might it be 1746, 1846 etc.?

Perhaps a malapropism, but it's hardly "exotic" - and I grew up in 4 Group territory...

After Wednesday's soaking, yesterday we climbed Dun I in a bit of a breeze, then went on to the White Strand of the Monks.

I remember one #eclipse where I used two offcuts of acid-free card - one with a pinhole in it - but struggled to get an image because the reading room windows were way above my head..

Mercury was carried part-way across the Atlantic and then released to fly on to the USA carrying mail. Mercury's pilot was DCT Bennet - I wonder what happened to him later,,,

Not wishing to split hairs, but his actual birthday was 26th September, rather than the 24th - the former is memorable for us, it's our wedding anniversary.

We had three visitors in the garden, breakfasting on seeds spilt from the bird feeders. I suspect they are also responsible for breaking most of this year's asparagus stems.

I gave up history at 13, spent most of my career in a museum, then did a history PhD. Told my old history teacher, who said "That's the thing about history; you can come back to it at any time."

On Thursday our centenarian ex-WAAF friend was among a group of veterans invited to meet the PM at No.10. Olga - never one to be overawed - congratulated him on resisting the invitation to join the latest war, and gave him some advice. Perhaps that's why @number10cat.bsky.social kept his distance.

Yes, the documentation was done afterwards, with some drama added - Tony dashing to Trench 3 to see a discovery, with carefully planned camera angles. I also remember the episode excavating a B-17(?) where the team saw the speed of their aviation counterparts' digging. "I thought we were quick!"

I used to watch it when the kids were small. It was usually interesting, but it became known as "Dad's Time Team nap". My friend who taught archaeology was very unimpressed by the speed with which they worked; ironically, many of his students had been inspired by the programme.

The second Battle of St Albans (17 February 1461) was fought in part on Bernards Heath. Sandridge Road, which runs across the heath, is lined with cherry trees whose red and white blossom represents the Lancastrian and Yorkist forces.
