50. Backmarker: a driver at the rear end of the field, often when he is encountered by the race leaders, blue flags are used to inform the backmarker when he should let a faster car past.

49. Blistering: The consequence of a tyre overheating. Excess heat can cause rubber to soften and break away in chunks from the body of the tyre. Makes it harder to drive.

48.3 Blue=about to be overtaken. If at all times=traffic is approaching(for driver leaving pits), if at practice=faster car about to overtake, If at race=about to be lapped by race leader and must give way. If not for three times then penalty imposed

47. Sectors: a track is divided into 1/3rds. Used to help time the laps. Colours: Yellow=not personal best, Green=personal best, Purple=fastest overall. During race there is a purple clock near the driver's name which indicates fastest lap (+1 point, only for top 10).

46. Tyre Compounds: Mix of rubber which makes the tyres. Colours: [slicks] Red=softs, fast but short life, Yellow=medium, slower but longer life, White= hard, slowest but longest life. [wets] Green=intermediate, light water and treads, Blue=wets, heavy water and bigger treads.

42. Slipstream: When a car is behind another on a straight, they get a lot more speed because all the air resistance and drag is faced by the car in front. This helps the car behind to overtake and is aided by DRS.

40. Oversteer: When the car turns more than intended, the rear tyres lose traction before the front. This often results in spin or crash. 41. Understeer: When the car turns less than intended, the front tyres lose traction before the rear. It causes the car to go wide.

39. Lock-up: When the car brakes sharply, one of the tyres may stop moving while others are still in motion. This results in flat spots and smoke.

38. Flat Spots: When the car slides, tyres get worn down in specific places. It causes severe vibrations and may force the driver to pit.

37. Tyre Warmers: Electrical blankets which keep the tyres at the required temperatures.

36. Gravel Trap: beds of gravel on the edges to slow down/stop a f1 car which swerves off the track.

35. Pitlane: Where the team garages are located.

34. Marbles: When tyres slide, pieces of rubber tear off it and collect on the side of the tracks. They are extremely slippery to drive on, like walking on marbles.

33. Tear-off Strips: Strips of plastic fitted over a helmet's visor. It can be removed during the race is the visor gets dirty, providing a clearer vision.

32. HANS device: Hands and Neck device. Provides additional support to the neck and head to prevent excessive movements during an event of an accident.

31. Sidepods: It contains the radiators which help in cooling of the car. They run along the side of the monocoque.

30. Monocoque: A tub where the cockpit is located. It provides additional security to the driver.

23. Rumble Strip: A bumpy curb at the edge of a corner. Used to warn driver about the edge of the corner.

22. Plank: Wooden strip underneath a car. It is to check that the cars are not too close to the ground. It also limits downforce on the car. eg. Charles Leclerc and Sir Lewis Hamilton were disqualified in COTA race in 2023 when their plank wear was deemed more than 1mm)

20. Pits: Area where the cars are maintained and kept during the race weekend.

19. Parc ferme: After qualifying or race the cars are parked there for the stewards check them. No one but the stewards are allowed to touch them until they are cleared.

18. Paddock: Area behind the pits where motor homes are located.

17. Paddles: Located behind the steering wheel, it is used to change the gears.

16. Graining: Car sliding results in small bits of rubber to tear off the tyre and stick to someone else's (or their own) car. It affects the driving because in great speed even a small bump feels like a lot bigger. That is called Graining.

15. Formation lap: Lap before the start of a race where drivers run once around the circuit to form the grid.

EJ @fly72.bsky.social · 15/11/2024
14. DRS: Drag Reduction System. It's a flap at the end of the car which when opened lets more air through and reduces drag. It makes the car faster and used to overtake. (its gonna be replaced soon lmao)

11. Degradation: Basically the wear of the tyre because of which it loses its performance.

10. Cockpit: The tub where the driver sits in a f1 car.

9. Dirty Air: When a car follows another, it will face turbulent air that reduces the aerodynamic performance and downforce of the car. Also affects the cooling of the car.

7. Chicane: It is a serpentine curve added by design rather than dictated by geography. It add extra turns and are used to slow traffic for safety. eg. Barcelona track was changed in 2023 to remove the chicane implemented in 2007 to provide a faster end to the track.

5. Bottoming: Its when someone is -I'm kidding. Bottoming means when the underside of the car hits the surface of the track. It generates the pretty sparks.

4. Ballast: Like ships have water in the lower level to maintain balance while at sea, ballast are weights attached to an f1 car to balance it. (and reach the weight level up but that's different)

3. Downforce: It is the vertical component of the aerodynamic forces acting on the car. As the car travels through the air, the downforce will push the car down into the ground. Very necessary to make sure the car doesn't lift off the ground and become an airplane 😬

2. Apex: In the inside line around a corner there is a middle point which the driver aim for. It has the minimum radius and slowest speed in that corner.

1. Aerodynamic: Not really a f1 term but it is very necessary for designing a f1 car. Basically, it is the study of airflow all around the a given object.
