I have come to realize I have bad habits. I love to read old dusty books. I also have developed the bad habit of wildlife photography—it makes me buy expensive cameras and lenses. Speaking of bad expensive habits, flying and travel are right up there too!

Africa does not have Hummingbirds, instead they have Sunbirds. Hummingbirds and Sunbirds appear to occupy the same niche, but one has a straight bill and the other a curved one. #birds

Silvery-Cheeked Hornbill spotted in the Arusha National Park in Tanzania. The big thing on top of his bill is a casque. It is hollow and evidently used to amplify sound to attract the ladies.

I don’t know what these kites are called anymore. They used to be Black Shouldered Kites and then they went to White Tailed Kites. Maybe they will be called Black Mascara Kites next. #birds

This Northern Gannet is way off course! He should not be in Northern California! However, he has called Pillar Point Harbor home now for several years. He is the only one in our area and is reduced to hanging out with Cormorants. #birds

Loons are so hard to photograph. Their eyes disappear in their black heads, if the lighting isn’t just right. #birds

I never expected to see Burrowing Owls in Chile, but there they were. I had been trying to get pictures of them in California for a long time, but no luck. Then on the outskirts of Santiago on our way to a wetland site, these little guys had found a home right next to the road and were just posing.

Southern Elephant Seals on the Falkland Islands. The ladies are all gone and now the guys are molting on the beach. They are itchy, scratchy, irritable and the guy next to them just poked them.

I’ve started Dick Wybrow’s Kane book series. Totally unbelievable supernatural thriller, but very funny. I always hesitate to read series books, because they can have bad endings after they have drug you through the mud. But, I already looked and this one promises a happy ending. Better have one!

I dutifully worked remotely for years. Rolling out of bed, clad in my jammies (unless I had an early Zoom meeting) and spending 6 to 8 hours in my home office. Now that I am retired, I can’t make myself go in there, even though I have fun projects I’d like to work on.

I have a pet peeve about ziplock closures on everything. The frozen peas, the salami, the cheese—-all have ziplocks. The problem is they often do not work. You can’t get them open, you can’t get them closed. The company may make a great product, but they don’t know how to make a ziplock.
