The young woman spoke with such bright reverence as if life was a fairy tale and magic was all they needed for a happy ending. It was as if she couldn’t see the shadows approaching her. The inevitable death.

After speaking those words, he sprang forward and shoved her away from the shadows. Pain rocked him as soon as he touched her. The scorching mystical agony tore a scream out of him, but it kept her away from the unearthly menace, and the shock did what he intended.
Sent him back to his body.

For everything one day must rot. Thankfully.
She continues to the edge of the woods and stops before the church entrance, glancing up at the round stained-glass window and its depiction of The Righteous beheading The Abomination. Her eyes catch on the scarlet drops of blood that cling to the blade; the triumphant grin on the man’s face as he holds the severed head aloft; the forlorn stare of green eyes empty of life. With a muttered curse, she tears her gaze away and shoves the door open—it hits the stone wall with a satisfying thud.
She may be bound, but she will not come meekly, a pet heeling for table scraps.
The human waits for her at the altar. What demand will they make? Will they tremble and struggle to say her name, or will they toss it out carelessly, as if it were theirs to do with as they please? The first are right to fear her and the second are fools.
With measured steps, she stalks down the carpeted nave, as if she has all the time in the world, as if her feet don’t burn with each pause between strides. She can’t ignore a summoning, but she damn well can make them wait for it.
