This means, eg, that in general you can fire back at hostile forces in a hospital but can’t just drop a bomb on it.

Moreover, I recall a clarification that, as a matter of international law, it can only remove the duty to “protect” hospitals but not “respect” them. What this means is that hospitals can be targeted by operations but there’s a firm obligation to distinguish and to minimize casualties and damage.

But it doesn’t make hospitals free game. It can remove protection from the hospital qua hospital but it doesn’t remove the protected status of people in the hospital.

It’s a bit frustrating when I’m trying to convince a mutual with arguments and then the dogpile comes in and makes them log off. 😔

I mean, in terms of law, thats most of what goes into proportionality. If the highest casualties ever caused by Hamas is around 1,200, then I don’t see how we can avoid the conclusion that the IDF didn’t killed orders of magnitude more people than future Israeli deaths prevented.
180
Florence Ashley @floralashes.bsky.social · 20h
I don’t think we need military expertise to say that killing several orders of magnitude more civilians than terrorist attacks is ethically indefensible.

Florence Ashley @floralashes.bsky.social · 21h
Yes, but suggestion isn’t that destroying the cities with the 10 innocents together with the would been fine if precision wasn’t possible. The suggestion was that the cities as a whole be saved for the 10, not only those 10.

It doesn’t feel like it answers?

Florence Ashley @floralashes.bsky.social · 21h
Put it this way—would Palestinians be justified in killing 10-20+ Israelis each time a Palestinian was killed? Or would that be beyond excessive?
000
Florence Ashley @floralashes.bsky.social · 21h
We’re talking about 2008. And I’m not suggesting nothing, but I am suggesting any answer that requires killing orders of magnitude more civilians is inherently inhuman and unacceptable.

Florence Ashley @floralashes.bsky.social · 21h
They are but I don’t see this claim in the replies. Then again, I may not have seen all replies.
020
Florence Ashley @floralashes.bsky.social · 21h
Why precision? It was about not destroying the city as a whole.
1130
Florence Ashley @floralashes.bsky.social · 21h
Preferably not kill 20-30 times more civilians?
000
Florence Ashley @floralashes.bsky.social · 21h
As a side note, am I correct in my perception that you’re approaching this from the belief or assumption that Israel must have been justified, and are seeking to confirm so?

Florence Ashley @floralashes.bsky.social · 21h
Civilian notification doesn’t excuse deaths. It’s an incredibly dense area and many people aren’t so readily mobile. If Iran sends notifications, would it be justified in bombing Tel Aviv?
200
Florence Ashley @floralashes.bsky.social · 21h
I don’t know everyone who responded but I’m not sure I’d dismiss them as terrorism apologists—are they apologizing terrorism or pointing out that Israel’s conduct has been far from acceptable? What if the IDF also engages in terrorism and inhumanity, as we see especially clearly on the West Bank?

Florence Ashley @floralashes.bsky.social · 21h
That seems like a change of topic. You asked for an instance of Israel starting a ‘round,’ I offered one. Also, saying there’s no intentional targeting of civilians ‘as a matter of policy’ doesn’t mean (1) there’s no intentional targeting of civilians or (2) there’s no disregard for their life.

“The scale of this war” was the referent. But also, I feel like if the concern is about the order of magnitude of Palestinian deaths, saying Netanyahu is damaging to the Jewish people doesn’t count?

(But insofar as Israel has said that closing the strait would be an act of war, it seems that Israel’s own logic would dictate that the blockade is an act of war.)

Yes and then in 2007 Israel imposed a blockade, which is just an occupation from the outside, much like a siege.

Hamas is a terrorist organization fuelled on despair, and the IDF is giving them more than a lot of that to go around.
2240
Florence Ashley @floralashes.bsky.social · 22h
But if we really want to speak of rounds then we could mention 2014, where the IDF’s ‘preemptive strike’ reignited hostilities that led to around 1,400 Palestinian deaths, only 25% of which were combatants per B’tselem.
2330
Florence Ashley @floralashes.bsky.social · 22h
A response that kills over ten times more people than what is being responded to is more a punishment than a response, but also I’m not sure we can speak in terms of discrete rounds (rather than periods of intensification) when there’s constant occupation and hundreds of yearly deaths.
2350
Florence Ashley @floralashes.bsky.social · 22h
“If Hamas didn’t attack Israel on October 7th, the number of casualties would be zero.” That’s just verifiably false. Before October 7th, the Israeli army was already killing several hundred Palestinians per year. And in some years, much more.

Florence Ashley @floralashes.bsky.social · 23h
I agree that it’s ultimately immaterial — but they also have no serious basis for the factual claim, and I’d venture to guess that most often it’s due to people googling “Gaza population since 2023” and seeing a graph that’s based on pre-genocide growth estimates.
100
Florence Ashley @floralashes.bsky.social · 12/10/2026
It feels hard to say we have a good ‘general picture’ if estimated excess deaths may be as much as five times the recorded numbers.
100
Florence Ashley @floralashes.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
“What kind of genocide is it when the population of Gaza is larger today than it was three years ago?” That’s just outright dishonesty. If you looked into it at all, you’d know we don’t have the data.

The problem with this framing is that they always define “right to exist” as “right to prioritize maintaining a Jewish voting majority above enfranchising everyone who lives in the governed territories.” Which gets you precisely into the policies in question.
from the Stephen Wise Free Synagogue: “I’ll debate Israel’s laws, its leaders, its policies. But I won’t debate whether it has the right to exist. That’s a stupid debate.”

“'No one bothered to check whether the accusation was true.’” So, an Australian Jew who was born in Israel but emigrated to Australia at 18 years old and never served in the Israeli military and is pro-Palestine was listed as a ‘sponsor’ for the event b/c she donated to the crowdfunding campaign.
“I am Jewish. I was born in Israel. I emigrated to Australia when I was 18. I did not serve in the military. I have never expressed any anti-Palestinian views. I really wanted to believe that "zionist" wasn't a dogwhistle for "Jewish" but I don't know what else it could be here.

No one bothered to check whether the accusation was true. The first I heard of any of this was this morning, when Freeplay told me they were refunding my donation and removing me as a sponsor because my mere name being listed "has created an untenable environment" for their speakers. I was stunned”

The discourse on antisemitism in the country is such that Mike Rogers can simultaneously attack Abdul El-Sayed *as* antisemitic, as a scary foreign Muslim critic of Israel, and also *with* antisemitism, as a tool of the foreign-born Jewish puppeteer.
"LEAKED: Footage of Abdul El-Sayed fundraising last night in the California home of the far-left Soros family.

Abdul’s education was paid for by the Soros family and NOW they are funding his campaign to make him a U.S. Senator

The Soros family is funding Abdul because he will carry out their agenda of:

➡️ defunding the police
➡️ emptying prisons, and letting violent criminals & sex offenders back onto the streets
➡️ gender transition surgeries for minors
➡️ allowing illegals to vote in American elections

Abdul is too extreme for Michigan."

“Similarly, the term "Islamophobia" is structurally flawed. By framing the issue as an irrational ‘phobia’ or fear, it medicalises what is in reality a form of bigotry and discrimination.” I’ve heard this one so often about homo/transphobia. It doesn’t get better with time.
