Returned to the westernmost part of the 18km wide snout of #Skeiðarárjökull, SE #Iceland. Comparison of photos taken in 1996 & 2026 illustrate 3 decades of drastic (2km) #glacier margin recession & the formation of a large #proglacial lake decoupling the glacier from it's outwash plain or #sandur

Upper photo: Supraglacial ice-walled canyon created during the November 1996 jökulhlaup. This canyon, with 30m high sides conveyed a discharge of ~25,000 m3s-1 with the capacity to suspend boulder-sized sediment. Lower photo shows the canyon floor preserved as a ridge following the melt of the glacier on either side. Oblique aerial photo taken in June 2026 showing the location of the supraglacial ice-walled canyon carved out by the November 1996. The glacier has receded by over 2km from this landform.

Flood flows on the River Tay at Birnam & Dunkeld 10 yrs ago during Storm Desmond. Not the largest flood on the Tay however properties were flooded. Peak discharge downstream at Ballathie exceeded 1800 cumecs (Marsh et al., 2016) lnkd.in/epNTVvcU A couple of videos: flic.kr/p/Bsz417 flic.kr/p/AXbHLY

I’m delighted to share that our latest research has just been published in HESS. We developed an unsupervised workflow to estimate river surface velocities from videos. Testing on 11,000+ videos against 274 gauging measurements showed excellent agreement. hess.copernicus.org/articles/29/...

It’s been great to spend a bit of time in the field recently. Here we are working with the National Trust to assess the effectiveness of a single intervention to enhance flows across a floodplain

For my inaugural post on Bluesky I thought I'd dig out some photos of ice-dammed lake drainage and jökulhlaup impacts from my PhD work at the Russell Glacier, west Greenland way back in 1987!
