Just tested out inkscape with 10 random 5,000 x 5,000 images embeded - save time ~5 seconds, load time ~11 seconds. Total svg file size ~200Mb. Inkscape definitely isn't a perfect piece of software, but it should be able to handle what you need

I typically use GIMP or Inkscape. Never had issues with importing lots of images into Inkscape, which is vector based, but that may depend on the resolution you import them at.

Excellent advice from the Book of the Dead for repelling beetles. Found in this article on ancient Egyptian pest management: www.researchgate.net/publication/...
Text reads: "Chapter 36 offers a formula to repel the so-called apshai - insect, which states: “Begone from me, O Crooked-lips! I am Khnum, Lord of Shen, who dispatches the words of the gods to Ra, and I report affairs to their master” (Taylor 2010). Illustrations associated with this spell (e.g., Fig. 6) show the creature to be an exceptionally large beetle, which the deceased threatens with a knife or impales
with a spear (its “crooked lips” thus possibly alluding to the asymmetrical biting cusps of coleoptera or the transverse movement of their mandibles when chewing; Chapman 2003)."A man brandishes a knife against a dog sized insect (with eight legs!), which appears to be a beetle. From the Book of the Dead; Tomb of Nakht,

The little knobs of silk are produced by a lot of cobweb weavers, including some widow spiders. If it is a widow, it's likely a Brown Widow since the other Pennsylvania species have smooth egg cases. Since it's more exposed than windows like, possibly an Ant-eating spider (genus Euryopis)?
