The people to whom it doesn't mean much are already answering Christian on the census, as shown by how different the results of BSAS are on this question.

An old colleague of mine was trying to hike the lot, which would have been easier for him if he'd lived further north than Derby

Speaking as a parent, these takes always baffle me - I love it, but having kids is hard work and it's expensive, surely the surprising part is how many people choose to have kids not the reverse?

JFC just have massive snitching bounties and implied mass surveillance - occasional shots from CCTV, drones, doorbell cameras etc, it'll work for the "don't think too hard" level of the film

British class has more layers than any of us can easily count, I think. From every position in the system there are distinctions you struggle to see

It may have improved, but as a middle class private school kid I went round Exeter twentyish years ago and went "no, too posh".

Right, you can go by what you like. We can mock, e.g. Tommy Ten-Names for SY-L, but mock and ban are very different things

Dropped the ball _hard_ on child abuse, elevated Ratzinger who was bad, otherwise a better-than-replacement Pope? Probably did the Church good to have a Pole in the top job as the Eastern bloc was falling apart

The food and company were both great, but the crockery was a total letdown.

@oldenoughtosay.com regret to inform you that the crockery was not Somervillian whatsoever
A plain white plate with no decoration whatsoever.

There should be, I'm pretty sure there is - there are a lot of individuals who are basically liberal but not SJW. As far as I can tell they don't sort into communities by that kind of politics, I run into them at like, a food bank or the school gate if that tracks?

So my thing about this is, from my experience in rationalist spaces I recognise the type of person you're talking about. But, I thought Scott Siskind was one of them and it turns out he was always a fascist masking his power level to recruit better - which makes me question my judgement of the type

Fair, but somebody with big public profile - I want to say Jonn Elledge but I'm not certain - has tarred Andy as a NIMBY for having reasoned practical opposition to this project. I should have given you more benefit of the doubt though, to be fair, sorry about that

There are definitely people whose real objection is that construction will disrupt their daily life, and I judge those people

Honestly in the city I don't hear people talking about it much. Couple of folks complaining about the promised fog on the A34

Flex @flexasync.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
Because all the forms asking for public comment and the planning process are framed around "which of these narrow grounds do your piddling objections fall under" rather than "what major infrastructure project should we build instead"? Andy Cooke's written about this whole mess v well for the Clarion

Ok, probably, but if you start from the assumption of "build STT first", does the reservoir need to be a megaproject like this?
200 0
Flex @flexasync.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
No because if they actually get STT they shouldn't need this reservoir? So they're very directly linked conversations
100 0
Flex @flexasync.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
They need Severn Thames transfer, they want a mega reservoir they'll never manage to fill without Severn Thames Transfer. STT solves the problem faster cheaper and with less risk, it's not NIMBYism to say do that first.

Third child's bum didn't agree with sudocrem which was unfortunate as it coincided with nursery going nut free and yellow metanium stopping production

Bepanthen but our nursery don't allow it because it uses almond oil and they're nut free

A midwife told us mid-late September was their busiest and worst time of year - in late September. Which made their resistance to letting us take our healthy baby home without more observations pretty baffling, but we argued our way out before the buses stopped and the baby's still fine at ~5 so 🤷

To me there's a degree of "the show runners don't understand their own show" in that over several series HIMYM established conclusively that Ted and Robin don't work as a couple, then it ends by putting Ted together with Robin. Not the only issue with the show, but I think an indicative one

I might not be seeing it, I criticise Labour from the left - but is there a right-of-centre party with policies that might attract a graduate or professional, or have they given those people up to Labour/Lib Dems/the Greens?

There's a place for a centre-right party in UK politics; if the Conservatives don't want to be it it's worth somebody else having a go? Between the Tories, Reform, Restore and the other Re-s it feels like the whole right is only offering anti-migration and anti-net-zero.

Also I think because Betriz is Iselle's companion and Iselle is quite young people see Betriz as younger than she actually is? (If memory serves Betriz is early 20s, Caz might be as old as 35, whereas Iselle is late teens)

The young conservatives of the Oxford Conservative Association were performatively Cavalier and Jacobite 15 years ago. Not sure how many of them honestly believed in anything, but even playing at it like that shocked me at the time

Doesn't matter, does it? 72% increase in deaths is too big to be just because of more vehicle miles. UK comparison, we have 18% lower vehicle miles and 40% lower pedestrian deaths between 2004 and 2024
