Hi, I'm back! Hope you liked these new snippets from Ana's past. She's very pleased to move out of her tent! 🌿

As she crossed the threshold, she took out a small cube that had travelled with her from city to city, the same future cube Knox had stolen from her when she’d first arrived in Evergreen Harbor. Ana shook it, laughing at the nonsensical answer, and placed the cube on the mantle.

Ana stood in front of her new house, alone again. There was plenty left to do, but this house was her own and she would make it her home. She remembered the way she felt long ago when her home was ripped away from her. No one would take it from her this time.

Ana couldn’t even begin to process her mom’s words. “...𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵? 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘥𝘰 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘯?” “𝘗𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘢 𝘣𝘢𝘨. 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘺. 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘢𝘹𝘪 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘣𝘦 𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘧 𝘢𝘯 𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘳,” Callie repeated quickly. “𝘉𝘶𝘵, 𝘸𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘯’𝘵…𝘸𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘯’𝘵 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘷𝘦, 𝘔𝘰𝘮! 𝘐—” Ana said as she started to panic. “𝘈𝘯𝘢. 𝘗𝘢𝘤𝘬. 𝘙𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘯𝘰𝘸.”

She’d walked home late with her head in the clouds, grinning from ear to ear as she took a long shower to wash the paint off. Ana was cozy in bed, daydreaming, when she heard her mother’s urgent voice. “𝘈𝘯𝘢, 𝘸𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘨𝘰. 𝘗𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘢 𝘣𝘢𝘨.”

A decade later, Ana found herself quietly painting next to Michael. She was grateful for his warm friendship, the awkward flirtations of their first meeting behind them. As she reminisced, she focused on the repetition of the paintbrush, ignoring the twinge of pain at her next memory.

Ana couldn’t remember the moments beforehand—suddenly they were just kissing, gently, getting more paint on each other and all over the floor. They stayed there for a long moment, tender and giddy with the change they both knew this moment meant for their friendship.

Ana thought back again to one warm, summer afternoon in the quarry. Mary had given the two teens a stack of paint buckets and brushes, sending them up to the recently drywalled top floor of the community center. Knox kept making goofy puns to make her laugh. Ana teasingly brushed his arm with paint.

Sitting around the campfire with beers and her new friends, Ana wondered if she could have that sense of community again. The time she spent in the city would haunt her for a long time, but she was beginning to feel at home here in Henford.

The community center was constantly running short of funds. Ana and Knox crafted dozens of bottles of seltzer and kombucha, selling the popular drinks to fund the center’s next project. They spent long hours chatting about everything under the sun, and Ana’s childhood fears all but disappeared.

Ana was constantly reminded of the time she spent in Grims Quarry, surrounded by community. She remembered Francine, always scurrying off to the next project; Mary and Blossom doting on each other; and her mom, who largely ignored her. Mostly she remembered Knox, her closest friend.

When Ana relented and finally asked for help, the work sped along. Her new friends brought their spare hammers and extra ladders, and the frame of the house was finished in just a couple of days.

Knox’s obsession with popcorn crickets hadn’t abated. Mary had finally taught him how to make her recipe, and he was excited to try it out with the crickets from the new insect farms. Ana missed his infectious enthusiasm. Remembering Knox made her crave a break from her solitude.

Ana and Knox had both celebrated their teen birthdays by the time the building had been constructed. The community center towered into the sky, though there was still plenty of work to be done inside.

The remainder of spring passed, and Ana had finally laid the foundation for her new home. It had been back-breaking work, and she’d been determined to do it alone. She had hoped it would go more quickly, a foolish thought when she remembered the years spent building the Quarry Community Center.

Aww, Ana has another new friend! 🌿 How are we all feeling about Michael?

“Walk me home?” Ana asked, silently hoping he wouldn’t reject her request. “Of course,” Michael smiled warmly, “I’ll cook you up a nice trout dinner when we get there.”

“I’m sorry, I—” Ana stuttered an apology. “I don’t know what came over me.” Michael, bewildered by the rapid shift of emotions, approached her cautiously. “Ana, you didn’t do anything wrong.” The sound of her name, in the same tone he might use to speak to a frightened rabbit, instantly calmed her

Excitement at her first catch coursed through her. Before she could stop herself, Ana threw her arms around Michael, who nearly stumbled off the dock in surprise. Just as quickly—she didn’t even give him time to return the hug—Ana pulled away, immediately embarrassed.

Michael cheered her on as she pulled the trout from the water. Ana felt a rush of adrenaline as she held up the fish. It was well over a foot long! That was the perfect size for a nice trout dinner.

Just before Ana was ready to call it quits for the day, she felt a big tug on the line and jumped up. “I think I caught something!” she exclaimed. Michael was right by her side, encouraging her to reel in the line between the tugs of the fish.

They settled in, taking turns holding the pole. Fishing was a slow-paced activity, and they sat comfortably in long stretches of silence. The sun warmed their skin as it steadily rose higher in the sky.

Michael caught a couple of small fish, tossing them back into the lake gently. “Too small for dinner. Here, you try,” he said as he handed Ana the pole, “When you get a bite, start to reel the line in slowly.”

𝒇𝒍𝒆𝒖𝒔 @fleusplays.bsky.social · 01/07/2026
Michael showed her how to cast. She watched as he released the line with a practiced hand, the bobber sailing in a smooth arc. “Ignore the little dips, that’s just the fish having a nibble. Wait for a sharper movement,” he clarified. Ana studied him as he focused on reeling up the slack.

After clearing the air, the rest of their walk was more amicable. Michael talked animatedly about different bobbers and types of bait, and she found him easy to listen to. He clearly knew a lot about fishing, and Ana’s excitement rose as they approached the lake.

Ana sighed, “I guess that’s true. I just wish you hadn’t interrupted us right after your date.” “Date?” Michael was confused again. “Oh, Cecilia? We’re just friends.” He paused before adding, “I wasn’t thinking about how Kim would feel. I just wanted to spend more time with you.”

𝒇𝒍𝒆𝒖𝒔 @fleusplays.bsky.social · 01/07/2026
“Apologize? For what exactly?” Michael asked, confused. “I just think you hurt her feelings,” Ana replied. “Look, I like Kim, I’m just not interested in her romantically,” he explained, “I let her down as gently as I could. But it’s a small town, and she can’t expect to avoid me forever.”

The early hour kept the pair quiet as they walked. The Bramblewood was wild and tangled; Old New Henford was all open fields and wide spaces. Even the River Bagley felt more peaceful here, lazily drifting along its course. Ana abruptly broke the silence, “I think you should apologize to Kim.”

They met in the valley. Ana felt her cheeks start to burn as she remembered stopping in this exact spot last night, when they had stood so closely that she could feel heat radiating off of Michael’s body. She crossed her arms defensively, keeping her distance.

Sara had called Michael a flirt, which was true, but Ana thought there was something else in the way he looked at her. Maybe she was just being overly cautious. At least Ana would learn how to fish. She loved the abundant forage here, but it was hard to live off of mushrooms and raspberries.

From her perch on top of the hill she could see for miles. Looking out at the countryside, Ana instantly felt calmer, the picturesque view quieting her busy mind. She had almost enjoyed her time talking to Michael last night. And yet…she felt uncomfortable under his gaze, as if he saw too much.

Ana reluctantly woke at dawn, her head throbbing dully as she stepped into the sunlight. Images from the night before danced around her head: the crowded bar, Kim talking animatedly, walking home with Michael. Why had she agreed to meet him so early after a night at the pub? She rubbed her temples.

They made a plan to walk to Old New Henford in the morning. Despite the late hour, Michael insisted they meet at dawn. He gave Ana one long, lingering look before disappearing down the hill. Back in her tent, the evening’s events swirled around in her mind before sleep quickly came to claim her.

Michael stepped in front of her unexpectedly and Ana nearly stumbled into him. “And now you want to spend more time with me?” he asked. He was standing too close. She fought the urge to step back. “No,” Ana replied stubbornly, instantly regretting it. “Well. I would like to know how to fish.”

When he asked if she’d had a chance to fish, Ana turned away, embarrassed. The barley bale had loosened her tongue enough that she couldn’t lie. “I don’t know anything about fishing,” she confessed. “Why did you tell me that you did?” “I wasn’t sure if I wanted to spend any more time with you.”

The crisp night air was a welcome shock to Ana, clearing her head after a night of drinks. Michael asked about the animals she had met since moving to the Bramblewood, an easy subject to talk about. She was particularly fond of Cookie, a rabbit who had been eating the weeds of her fledgling garden.

Ana felt the room tilt a little, her anger deflating. “I think I’d rather just go home.” She felt a little flutter of surprise when Michael offered his hand to her, a feeling that she was quick to squash. Carefully standing up without taking it, Ana agreed to let him walk her home.

Her defenses slammed back up as Michael sat down in Kim’s vacated seat. “Why would you do that? You know she’s still embarrassed about the rose.” Ana chastised. “Look, we agreed to be friends!” Michael responded, holding his hands up as a shield. “Having drinks is a friendly thing to do.”

At the sound of Michael’s voice, Kim stood abruptly and headed towards the back door, her nearly full glass of wine left on the bar. Ana tried to call after her, annoyed at Michael for interrupting. It had been a long time since she’d let her guard down and enjoyed the company of a new friend.

“Mind if I join you two for another drink?” Michael asked, his gaze focused solely on Ana. She eyed him suspiciously, still unwilling to let her guard down around him.

Kim was even more talkative once she’d had a few glasses of wine, but Ana found herself enjoying the company. She even opened up about her plans for a cottage, and told Kim about the tree she had felled. The pair were so engrossed in conversation that neither noticed Michael approaching the bar.

𝒇𝒍𝒆𝒖𝒔 @fleusplays.bsky.social · 03/06/2026
Fortunately, Kim arrived as a welcome distraction. She even brought a gift, declaring Ana her Fairing Friend for the day. Ana still thought Henford was a little peculiar, but perhaps not all of its quirks were bad.

Sara was happy to dish out a little gossip. “I’m surprised to see them here together again,” she confided, “I heard their first date went very poorly.” Ana felt a rising wave of jealousy that she couldn’t explain. She had no interest in romance, and even less interest in romance with Michael.

As Ana sipped her barley bale, she resisted the urge to look over her shoulder. She’d noticed Michael chatting comfortably with a woman in the corner. Ana recalled the woman’s perfectly styled coif and fashionable, fringed boots, and tried not to think about her own untidy hair and scuffed sneakers.
