The Thiepval Memorial is more than stone and names. In this episode of The Old Front Line, we explore the village that shaped the Somme battlefield, the genius of Edwin Lutyens, the stories behind 72,000 missing soldiers, and walk the ground at Thiepval today.

Somme: Mighty Thiepval
The Thiepval Memorial to the Missing is the largest British war memorial in the world and one of the most powerful places where we remember the sacrifice of the Missing on the Western Front. In this episode, we explore the story behind "Mighty Thiepval" and uncover why this iconic monument continues to resonate more than a century after the Battle of the Somme.

Rather interestingly this is the first time that within a soldiers record of the First World War there is an actual drawing of the human body enabling them to highlight where the distinctive marks were specifically located.

Yesterday we were lucky enough to see a dedication service led by the Wounded Warrior Canada 🇨🇦 at the John McCrae Memorial plaque, Essex Farm A.D.S and Cemetery. The group are cycling along the Western Front and at some point will be visiting John’s resting place in Wimereux Cemetery.

For a brief moment this morning I did a search on a soldier. This afternoon back to constant churning & requests being blocked. Absolutely frustrating…😤😤😤

Had an email from them “Additional restrictions have been applied to some global countries where we are experiencing high levels of concerning activity.” Fingers crossed it gets sorted soon as, I haven’t been able to access the find war dead since Tuesday.

It was a long day over 400 kilometers specifically covering two soldiers, the area leading up to each of their untimely demise. Heartened by the clients feedback, it’s important so pleased not only for the clients but for the soldiers.

Queen Mary inspecting convalescents - possibly in one of the base hospitals along the coastline of France, given that the photo is a "British Official Photograph From The Western Front." A boost of morale for the wounded soldiers that are all lined up. 📸Photo: Own Personal Collection

I think some of the residential streets etc., around the whole area of Hulluch/Loos can be somewhat depressing. The cemetery wasn’t too bad yesterday albeit because the sun was at it’s brightest.

Recce day today, one stop Philosophe British Cemetery, Mazingarbe, designed by Sir Herbert Baker, 1,996 burials of which 277 are unidentified. A British Captain M.C, with the epitaph “If Ye Break Faith With Us Who Die We Shall Not Sleep, McCrae.”

This is why people shouldn’t post photos across social media platforms about “battlefield finds” as they walk across farmers fields without permission. When one does it the green light is that everyone can do it: “In addition to hitting all the hot spots do you take tourists out looking for relics?”

A small horde of First World War ordnance, not surprisingly the farmer has it flagged ready for DOVO SEDEE rounds. I think this os the first time in all my years that I’ve come across a bomb that will have been dropped by an aeroplane. There’s always something new to be seen, found or learnt.

"After Pilckem Ridge, there were only a handful of us left from my platoon. An Officer, lost in the confusion of battle, came up to us and asked 'Who are you? are you the West Ridings,' and a wag with us answered 'No, we're the bloody Welsh Walkings,'he said. 31st July 1917 - Began the Third Ypres.

Once pontoon bridges would have crossed the Ieper/Ijzer Canal during the First World War supplying front line areas, evacuating the wounded back across the canal to the Advanced Dressing Stations, over a hundred years later beautiful evening colours as the sun goes down on a tranquil Summer evening.

On this day 8th July 1923, the Brooding Soldier Memorial was inaugurated. The ceremony was attended by a number of relatives of the fallen soldiers and during the greater part of the ceremony four Canadian veterans stood motionless at each corner of the column with arms reversed and head bowed.

In the First World War Noyon was completely wiped off the face of France. It then took around two decades to rebuild, today as you walk around the centre and in the Cathedral the markings of allied bombings of 1944 are only too visible.

No walking across the Millennium bridge in Ieper (Ypres) yesterday due to works, I walked the long way but pleased as I spotted a few scattered poppies set back from the Menin Gate Memorial. I welcomed the opportunity to stop as I walked through to just gaze pondering at the names in front of me.

Battle of Messines 7th-14th June 1917. Irish Peace Park commemorates the Irish of Ireland sitting on a section of the Messines & Wytschaete Ridge. An idea born by two Irish men which through their commitment & dedication saw coming to fruition with the memorial being inaugurated in November 1998.
