And if somebody else has gone out of their way to earn a little trouble... well, I'd say the circumstances matter.”

They did just fine for themselves, and most seemed perfectly happy besides. So I'd say do what makes you happy, kiddo, so long as it doesn't bring trouble down on your own head or hurt anybody else. —>

I've been told that's an old-fashioned way of looking at things, and honestly, they're probably right. Some of the finest women I've ever known served in the military or worked in government, and not one of them fit neatly into what people called normal gender roles. —>

“Sweetheart, what exactly is normal girl stuff? Back in my day, asking that sort of question would've gotten you answers like dolls, magazines, spending hours on the telephone, and folks asking when a girl planned on getting married and having children. —>

-she grabbed a packet and put it in Flagg’s Mugs and she did the same with hers. She poured the water in. “Are my parents upset that I prefer archery instead of.. normal girl stuff.. ?”

General Flagg @flaggedjoe.bsky.social · 11/06/2026

Though, personally, I've always preferred my own choice of weapon. Nothing against archery, mind you—it just never quite became my specialty the way it seems to have become yours.”

General Flagg @flaggedjoe.bsky.social · 11/06/2026

To be honest, I wasn't much of a fan at first, but I ended up making some good friends, and it taught me survival skills that came in mighty handy later on in the Army. It's also where I learned how to handle a bow. —>

“When I was ten years old, it was practically a required extracurricular activity. My father used to say it would build character and teach me a few real-world skills. —>

100

But it seems you've taken a real shine to it if you've put this much thought and effort into it. Can't say I blame you, either.”

100

Flagg shared his bit of grandfatherly wisdom as they made their way back to Josephine's quarters. “I haven't picked up a bow in a good long while—probably not since my days in the Scouts. Never gave it much thought after that, truth be told. —>

100

“Kiddo, don't pay them any mind unless they get in your face. And if they do, tell them off first. If they still insist on making a nuisance of themselves, then you've got my permission to remind 'em that bad manners have consequences.” —>

Regardless, he needed new equipment. Letting Duke walk into situations like this without Sigma Gear wasn’t going to fly anymore.

000

Duke would be fine, especially since his cross-species physiology granted him a regenerative healing factor. Combined with G.I. JOE's advanced medical technology, he’d be back on his feet within weeks. A fact Duke seemed to have forgotten, despite Doc personally testing his blood himself. —>

He held onto his granddaughter’s hand with a reassuring squeeze. “Absolutely, kiddo.”

100

“I don't see any harm in having a hobby, and it's good to have something that keeps both your body and mind sharp. So I'd say archery's a pretty fine choice. If you'd like, you can use our training course whenever you want to get some practice in.” —>

They needed more information before anything else.

Information? Resources? Or was destroying one of their top-secret installations the objective all along? Flagg watched the crystalline flames continue to consume what remained of the facility, his expression unreadable as he turned the possibilities over in his mind. —>

Flagg wasn’t blind. One look at Duke was enough to tell he was in a world of hurt, but with enough painkillers and a little time, he’d heal well enough. Even so, none of it sat right with him. What did COBRA Commander want out of this? —>

Flagg kept his eyes on the burning structure for only a moment before turning his attention to the personnel evacuating the area. “Everybody make it out alright? Where’s my head count?”

100

Everyone got out of the Shadow Watch Facility as quickly as possible. It was a good thing they did, because moments later the device detonated, erupting with massive amounts of Tesseract energy. Crystalline flames surged through the base, engulfing the facility from within. —>

Right now, though, things are nice and quiet, and my people are handling the day-to-day business for me. So for the moment, you've got me all to yourself, kiddo.”

100

Now, I should tell you there’ll be times when I have to go somewhere because of work. Comes with the job, I’m afraid. But I promise I’ll let you know whenever that happens. —>

“It’s been too long, and I honestly hate that it took this long for you to spend the summer with your grandpa. And no, it’s no bother whatsoever. I wouldn’t have agreed to it if I didn’t want you here. —>

100

When he saw his granddaughter in person for the first time in years, he waited for her to turn and face him before pulling her into a tight, heartfelt hug. “Hey, kiddo. It's good to see ya again. Been far too long, if you ask me.”

100

Getting a visit from his grandkid on a JOE base was a rare occasion, but it was always welcome, especially since the job had a way of taking more from a person's personal life than it ever gave back. —>

100

Regardless, we need to go. Let’s move! Move!”

100

“It’s a COBRA design—something our database hasn’t seen before, probably something new, and knowing COBRA, it likely has defensive measures built into it. It’s a tesseract design, but the facility’s infrastructure should keep the effects contained to the interior. —>

100

Within moments, the device was located. A countdown indicator appeared in his display, showing approximately two minutes remaining before detonation. “That snake! Everybody out, now! We don’t have time to wait on a bomb squad!”

100

Years of experience and instinct took over as he quickly assessed the surrounding structure before activating his sunglasses to scan the area. —>

COBRA Commander usually makes things harder on us and covers his tracks when he launches an attack. Did he say anything to you?”

General Flagg @flaggedjoe.bsky.social · 05/06/2026

“You did what you thought was right in the moment. I can’t fault you for that, and I had a sneaking suspicion that if you hadn’t done what you did, it wouldn’t have forced COBRA to pull back. Still, it feels like something’s missing here. —>

100

“I want to believe that’s the case, but since the first time we encountered him, COBRA Commander hasn’t shown himself to be a normal man, Duke. Do you know why he was here in the first place? My people are currently searching the facility to take a head count and see if anything was taken.”

The JOE Troopers saw Duke injured and moved in to assist him. Flagg soon entered the room shortly afterward. Flagg looked over the damaged room, taking in the situation in a slow, steady sweep before resting his attention on Duke. “Looks like we’ve got ourselves a fine mess here, Duke.”

When arriving at the U.S. Shadow Watch Facility after the emergency signal via JOE Frequency, JOE Troopers breached the facility and were about to corner Cobra Commander until he was extracted by his personal Crimson Guard and escaped through the M.A.S.S. Device. —>
