Pen, watercolor, black & white charcoal pencil.

Another featured piece from the Spooky Pants book.

A man in a sweater stands with his hands on his hips looking out of a large window with the curtains open. Things aren’t looking good outside, reader. A massive winged demon is emerging from the clouds as dozens of little ghosts and bone demons rip through the sky. On the ground below we see townsfolk running through the grass. Our man in the window is in no mood for this. He lets us know, “Oh, I am in no mood for this.” His dog looks out the window as well, wagging its tail.

Fantasia (1940) inspired drawing. I think I could’ve gone a little heavier with the chaos outside but we’ll try again with fresh drawings this October. I like how the clouds turned out. Trying to balance my sloppy lines with more detail can be tricky but I think we achieved a good result.

Book recommendation: A case to revive value of community and labor, on place of tribalism and technooptimism. It's strong even without referring to the climate crisis.

Book recommendation: This book is a plain and clear expression of a view I was more and more convinced of lately. To have the power humanity has and thrive we need to radically change our priorities, value what we have instead of wanting more, and scrupulously guarding against any dishonesty.

On my part, I set a challenge to myself: Max 2 european flights a year (1 business + 1 holidays, family visits by train). Max 1 intercontinental every 3 years. No more fragile fruits off-season. Another attempt to cut meat (especially beef) in half in a few ways. Wish me luck...

Book recommendation: It's a rare 10/10 must-read! On the one hand it clearly exposes extreme risk related to climate change. (It's worse than you think.) On the other keeps a casual attitude, degree of positivity, and gives concrete recommendations motivating you to act.

Making money is a substantial difference (it's explicitly listed as a factor), but I admit that I wasn't able so far to reproduce work via chat gpt.

FK Malinowski @fkmalina.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
If we applied your standard as I understand it, there is no reason for any movie adaptation to compensate the book author. Different style, no verbatim, no passing of the source as own work, substantial transformation. But it is a commercial use of a full work. What distinguishes these cases?
010
FK Malinowski @fkmalina.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
The point still stands, but good argument. Imagine LOTR adaptation, just avoiding literal quotes. Would that be all right? In your exercise try asking for details, narrative, ask to add dialogue in style of the author, chapter by chapter. Would you publish the result and be okay charging for it?

Now consider this: anyone with access to the model can make a comic like that for themselves with a few-sentence prompt. With the same plot, characters, big chunks of dialog word verbatim. And AI companies get paid for subscription. This is my argument. 2/2

FK Malinowski @fkmalina.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
Same here, neither lawyer nor American. My thinking is that LLM can do much more than review does. Imagine taking that, turning into a comic book, and selling it. That would be a clear infringement for me, and I hope you agree. 1/2

FK Malinowski @fkmalina.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
I don't think that reproducing is a necessary factor - as far as I can say the law is about more general use. I would argue that training LLMs by AI companies has a) commercial purpose b) uses whole publication c) impacts market for the original work. See: www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/...

Book recommendation: One may raise many valid objections about the book's assumptions leading to high mean earth warming for "optimal" economic outcome. But from other perspective - since those are assumptions on which modern economy runs, the book predicts where we are heading.

Book recommendation: It feels unimaginable, but even in the best case scenario we look at a climate-driven displacement of hundreds of millions of people over coming decades. That's best case. Panic is rarely useful. But a healthy dose of fear when your house is on fire is fully justified.

Book recommendation: When you wrongfully get denied a loan, service or dignity because of personal decision, you can rightly try to hold the decider accountable. But when it's the same happens because of a placeholder policy... The "Rage Against the Machine" name suddenly feels much more relatable.

Small penalty (month suspention based on automatic check) will remove 90% of the problem, without triggering edge cases that might seriously hurt someone honest. What's a genuine danger are hallucinated works that PASS automatic checks, when hallucinations are not provable. (Eg. AI Ranga Dias) 2/2

The more I think about it, the more contrived this whole problem seems. Eg. The publications with hallucinated references are a problem, for sure, but it's also something that automated tool can fix. Any good journal already automatically checks the references against a database. 1/2

Rarely have i seen such a flawed reasoning. - attributing product to a CEO/founder - ignoring that tools are based on ideas in the zeitgeist - neglet of anti-market practices And if those are not a factor: Where is fortune of Shockley? Why does my patented invention boost Gate's wealth but not mine?

It's quite exciting to start learning that phenomena like red tape and corruption can be modeled. Sure, the models start simple, and shouldn't be simplistically applied. But once the mathematics captures some aspects of reality, the research can become more concrete and testable.
