PINCH - 2/2

"Years later I'd put the pillowcase away, I started ripping out my eyebrows" A younger version (early 20's) version of me is sitting in front of a laptop, using my finger and thumb to tear out my right eyebrow. The next panel, I am looking at myself in the bathroom mirror, an arrow pointing to my eyebrow that says HALF-GONE. "Oh, oops. Maybe I'll just shave the other to ma--" I say, and my mother interrupts me from the hallway with "NO!!". "I tried all sorts of fidget toys." Drawing of some popular fidget toys and squishies. "Small! Cute! Socially acceptable!" An aside says "This is also around the time I was diagnosed with ADHD".

I turn away from my laptop with a thoughtful expression. "...no one is here. Who am I being acceptable for?" I take my pillow out of its case with a "flop" sound effect. "I started over with a new pillowcase." I hold the pillowcase out in front of me. "Definitely can't fit in it anymore." I try to put my legs into the pillowcase like I did as a child, but cannot fit. "Aw."

"Sure enough, the silky edge is pilling in a way that feels familiar." A slightly older (23-24 year old me) is wearing headphones and sitting in front of a laptop while fidgeting with the pillowcase. I am looking away in contemplation. "At least eyebrows grow back". "FIN"

PINCH - a short auto-bio comic reflecting on my childhood comfort object (1/2)

"PINCH" A cover image with an abstract cell-like shape "Joey Hagan"

"Most kids have a baby blanket or a stuffie they are attached to." Three children are holding a blanket or stuffed bear. "I chose a pillowcase." Drawing of a pillow case. "Legs stretched to the corners." Myself as a child, sucking my thumb, with my legs in the pillowcase. "Knees up, held in place by the width." Loose drawing of a pelvic skeleton.

"And the most important part: the silky decorative edge" A panel shows an up-close of the pillowcase's fabric edge. "Rubbing, scraping, picking" Three subsequent panels of fingers interacting with the fabric. "Nothing else scratched the itch" A dog scratching its ear with its hind leg

"Over time, the fibers degraded. Matted into new shapes. Pilled into piles and peninsulas. Sometimes, when the fibers had come loose, I would pull them out." Each sentence is accompanied by a drawing of the silky edge, becoming more worn down and torn over time. "I always regretted it after and mourned the lost geography" My child self holds the pillowcase like a precious object, framed by an arched panel

ODE TO MOUNTAIN DEW: divided for easier viewing :)

fizz @fizzfloat.bsky.social · 14/08/2025

big mtn dew pls bring back my fave... i miss her

Ode to Mountain Dew: A scrolling comic begins with myself lounging in an inner tube on an orange-red ocean. A cup of Mtn Dew Southern Shock rises out of the water. "Did you know? Bojangles has an exclusive mtn dew flavor." (SOUTHERN SHOCK) (WOW!) In the next panel I am filling up a Bojangles cup at a soda fountain: "A fountain drink-- and my favorite!" I look at the camera with a crazed grin: "Sorry-- did I say HAS? I meant HAD! They discontinued it!" "I was devastated" accompanied by me, naked and crouched on all fours like an animal, sucking through a straw stuck into a grave that reads "2020-2033 Southern Shock. Wife of Solarflare." I wipe my tears and sniff "But at least I have my second fave..." "Major Melon!" BOOM the major melon explodes. "At least I still have my third fave..." The comic ends with me sitting with Baja Blast with a blank stare. "...do they really need two new summer baja flavors every year? Bring back Southern Shock and Major Melon I swear to Go--"
