NIH wants to replace grant scores and percentiles with three broad categories, and withhold scores from applicants, staff, and Advisory Councils. Some discretion makes sense, but no scores makes a vague process even more of a black box. Pls comment by October 13: rfi.grants.nih.gov?s=6a2b1c22c3...

I talked to @engadget.com about why ChatGPT for Teens needs to take disordered eating seriously. The new safeguards and parent notifications are a step in the right direction, but they’ll need careful testing to know whether they actually work for teens and families. www.engadget.com/2241179/chil...

One thing I’m especially excited about is that the intervention addressed anxiety, depression, and eating disorders together. Eating disorders are often left out of broader digital mental health efforts despite their severity and prevalence. 5/n

Students receiving the digital program were more likely to engage in treatment and experienced significantly better mental health outcomes compared to referral to campus care. The intervention led to meaningful reductions in overall prevalence of mental health disorders through 2-year follow-up. 4/n

This was a large-scale trial involving more than 6,000 students (of almost 40K screened!)— one of the largest studies of its kind in college mental health. And this was not a tightly controlled lab study, but a real-world population-based trial examining implementation and impact at scale. 3/n

College students face massive barriers to accessing evidence-based mental health care, including long waitlists, limited campus resources, stigma, & cost. We wanted to test whether a scalable digital intervention approach, offered following population-based screening, could help close this gap. 2/n

Takeaway: Even low-intensity, scalable digital interventions can meaningfully reduce ED symptoms in teens. Coaching may add benefit—especially for certain behaviors (e.g., binge eating) or for certain subgroups.

Teens reported positive experiences using the app. There were no sig. differences b/t groups in global ED psychopathology. BUT, importantly, there were significant improvements over time across all conditions. For binge eating, all groups showed reductions, but the fastest improvements were in GSH.

The number of NIH competitive awards is down 50% from 2025, and down ~70% from prior years. Even if they catch up by the end of the year, only wealthy institutions can bridge these huge funding gaps. They're killing science-and violating the constitution-by weaponizing the bureaucracy
