Oxford Street Development Corporation (OSDC) is inviting local residents to visit a drop-in event to find out more about the forthcoming pedestrianisation of the shopping street. Westminster City Council has been told to increase compensation payment to a visually impaired man who was left living in a hotel with no cooking facilities for 13 months longer than he should have been. Mr B was left in financial trouble because he was forced to rely on takeaways every day, and the temporary accommodation was far from his support network which made attending hospital appointments difficult.

MCR London Holdings Ltd has this month lodged a planning application with Camden Council for a hotel-led scheme on the site of the BT Tower in Fitzrovia, revealing for the first time the important details of the redevelopment. Residents and politicians have hit out at TfL over “disruptive” Tube noise they say has been plaguing streets on the border of Camden and Westminster for several years. The sounds and vibrations from the Victoria line coursing through Fitzrovia and the wider Warren Street Area have been shaking bed frames, waking people up in the early hours of the morning and keeping them up at night during Night Tube hours.

Declining pupil numbers in Central London is having a disastrous impact on school budgets with around 40 per cent of primaries running a deficit. Fourteen out of 34 primary schools in the City of Westminster are in the red financially, with one school’s shortfall exceeding £1.2mn. The council report data comes as over a quarter of Westminster’s primary school places are empty driven partly by declining birth rates and families leaving Central London due to the high cost of living here.

Plans to modernise one of London’s busiest intercity stations are set to be decided by the Planning Inspectorate amid local concerns over the future of a historic square and the impact of demolitions. The Metropolitan Police have opened an investigation after a man was attacked and seriously injured in Whitfield Gardens, Fitzrovia, on Thursday morning. According to a report by London Now, a man in his 40s was taken to hospital with multiple injuries. Whitfield Gardens public park remained cordoned off with blue police tape and officers were still in attendance on Friday afternoon.

Festus Akinbusoye, who has previously run as a parliamentary candidate for the party, has today thrown his hat into the ring in a contest involving high profile names. The Tories have fallen short to Sir Sadiq Khan in each of the last three elections since Boris Johnson stood down as Mayor of London.

Westminster City Council's planned new waste depot in South London will cost nearly £7mn more than originally planned, according to a Cabinet member report published this month. Originally estimated to cost £6.6mn, the project is now predicted to cost over of £13.5million. "Echo in the Fog" and "Tomorrow’s Sorbet" are two exhibitions opening concurrently this September at Art Forward Gallery in Whitfield Street, Fitzrovia. Presented across two gallery spaces, the exhibitions offer distinct perspectives on contemporary textile practice. "Echo in the Fog" explores memory, mythology, folklore and ecology, and is the debut solo exhibition of Polish, London-based artist Karolina Dworska. "Tomorrow’s Sorbet" examines domesticity, denial and the desire to postpone difficult realities, and is a collaborative installation by London-based textile artists Heidi Pearce and Andia Coral Newton.

Westminster Safer Neighbourhood Board will hold a public meeting on 24 September 2026. The Board provides a forum where residents, businesses, and community organisations can engage with local police and help to shape local policing priorities. Photo: LDRS A coroner has issued a warning over NHS triage systems after the death of a North London woman from complications following surgery. Muluembet "Mulu" Yohanes, 53, died in February 2025 from complications from minimally invasive brain surgery she underwent weeks before. An inquest into her death concluded that she died from a combination of pneumonia following a stroke and seizure, brought on by low sodium levels following the operation to remove a non-cancerous brain tumour.

A new exhibition at the Fitzrovia Chapel in September brings together a selection of photographs by Carole Rawlinson FRPS who documented the final days of the Middlesex Hospital in 2005, as it was being cleared and closed ahead of its eventual demolition. Having give birth to her daughters at the hospital, Rawlinson returned over several months to photograph its spaces, objects and working life, capturing the atmosphere of a much-loved London institution before it disappeared forever.
