I was buying a movie ticket the other day and when I got it I noticed a reduced price. I said, "You made a mistake." The ticket guy said, "Are you over 55?" I just nodded. A coming off age experience that I hadn't expected. I'm many years over 55 but this was the first call out.

I am shocked that Spanberger vetoed public workers bargaining rights. It seems that some democrats don't realize that leaning into workers rights is a win. It is evident to the moderate workers with whom I work. They don't vote for the democrats because of trust and legislative reversal.

Do you know where the most densely populated place on the planet is? Your colon. Trillions of microbes live there, digesting food, producing vitamins, training your immune system, and influencing behavior. You are less an individual organism and literally a spaceship for your microbial ecosystem.

Trying something a little different. Bluesky was getting really doomy for me. Which brings me to the spadefoot toad. Spadefoot toads can be buried for years underground, waiting for rain. When storms arrive, they emerge like a horror movie which is why I love them. In Colorado, this was an event.

I'm an ecologist. What are you gonna do? Tardigrades survive by nearly shutting life off. They dry into a cryptobiotic “tun,” slowing metabolism almost to zero. They survive freezing, radiation, crushing pressure, and even space itself. Tiny animals behaving like biological time travelers.

Nematodes are alien life disguised as worms. They survive boiling deserts, frozen soils, ocean trenches, and even the vacuum of space. Some steal genes from other organisms, some control hosts like parasites from science fiction, and trillions live beneath our feet shaping Earth’s ecosystems unseen.

Fungi are biological aliens hiding in plain sight. Many are multinucleate. Think many souls one body. Their stomach is outside themselves, dissolving wood, soil, even rock with enzymes before absorbing it, like in Star Trek. Forests belong to the fungi, not the trees. Some have 20000 or more sexes.

I talk to my students all the time about their lives and Gen Z are solid under the BS that is generationally flung onto them. One conversation gave me this: The test of civic maturity isn’t whether people argue loudly. It’s whether they still accept losing without reaching for a weapon. Solid.

Conservatism emphasizes limits on power. Its core principle is that government authority should be constrained by law, oversight, and transparency to prevent abuse, protect individual liberty, and ensure the state is accountable to the people it governs. Where are the conservatives in congress?

I'm an evolutionary ecologist and teacher. A former student sent a Christmas card, now a nursery owner, saying he thinks about what I taught him every day. It brought the feels. Seeing people you care about thrive, and knowing you mattered, restores faith in humanity.

I feel awful because I'm a scientist and am optimist, but since society has become anti-science or anti-reality, my posts have become dark. I could be wrong, but societies don’t collapse when bad things happen. They collapse when bad things happen and nothing corrects them.

1/2 Attacking Kelly isn’t about law or policy; it’s about undermining credibility. When an administration targets a highly trusted, reality-anchored figure, an astronaut, it signals insecurity and institutional decay. Power attacking trust is not strength; it’s a warning sign.

I find it interesting when people call tax legislation permanent because tax laws aren’t truly permanent; any future Congress can change or repeal them. Trump’s tax cuts increase debt while they remain in effect, but their long-term impact isn’t fixed. 'Forever' is hyperbole.

True education isn’t a transaction. It’s a craft. Like a master guiding an apprentice, it’s about passing on wisdom, skill, and curiosity. When we treat students as learners instead of customers, we honor the real purpose of higher education.

Thirty years on, colleges have shifted from trusting educators to fear-driven control by administrators, treating students as “customers.” I don’t know how many master electricians would call their apprentice a customer, yet that’s how higher ed now frames the craft of teaching.

How is this logical? Trump’s billion-dollar demand of UCLA only hurts students, the very people our government is meant to support. Even conservatives must see that tearing apart the education system undermines what once made this country great.

1/3 I am now a scientist, but I started my educational pursuits with a BA in philosophy, where I learned about the failings of scientists and their dogma. Many forget that libertarianism isn't just political; it's rooted in Kant’s view that liberty arises from being, not from governments.

The people are stirring, like the harbor before the first crate hit the water. Trump, the Court, and the Leviathan road crew take heed. This isn’t your Tea Party. It’s the real one: progressive, awake, and fed up. In a democracy, we are the law. Fear not rage. Fear resolve.

Post 1/8: I am mystified. If we’re truly a nation of laws, we can’t pick and choose which ones to follow. Ignoring bargained rights for federal workers isn’t reform. It’s lawlessness. Left or right, if power overrides process, we all lose the protection that law is meant to give.

When justice fails, rage fills the vacuum. But rage doesn’t have to burn. It can march. Peaceful protest turns fury into focus. Turning outrage into action and alliance. A crowd yelling is a moment. A crowd planning? That’s a movement. Five million people is fucking awesome history.

Why do Republicans think a narrow, authoritarian system built on exclusion won’t eventually exclude them, too? Authoritarianism doesn’t reward loyalty. It consumes it. History shows us this over and over.

If the GOP ignores its own voters, dodges accountability, and rigs the system. who’s left to hold them responsible? Reality is already optional; until it bites. But by then, the architects of denial have cashed out and moved on. The rest of us are left to clean up an unlivable planet.

Trump ignores spending laws now. Why would this bill change that? He’ll defund health care and education. Not by accident, but design. Magical thinking won’t stop a man who sees obedience in every funeral. This is rule by cruelty. And that's the point. Now you're getting it.
