Battlestar Galactica. The show's tagline ended with "and they have a plan." The whole show was layers of mystery and lore about the Cylons' true motivations and what was going on behind the scenes. Then at the end there is no plan, none of the mysteries are answered. Retroactively made it pointless.

This is completely true, but it might be true of human brains too, we just don't know all the numbers and formulas. I agree that our current GPTs are not intelligent in a real sense, but I think this "AI can never be intelligent" position is reductive and denies the existence of emergent phenomena.

I'm reminded of the phrase "if your response to human suffering is an indifferent 'well, I suffered, and I turned out fine,' then you did not, in fact, turn out fine."

@tkingfisher.com Have you read Hiron Ennes's novel "The Works of Vermin"? I think you'd like it, it's *really* gross :) (This opinion may have been influenced by reading this right after finishing Wolf Worm.) Also it has a perfume-based magic system.

Are you doing any talks at @defcon.bsky.social this year for those of us not staying after for trainings? I don't see you on the main stage schedule but I know I've seen you at PhysSec Village and such in the past too.

People using public, online LLMs to ask how to do crime reminds me of the people who signed up for Ashley Madison using their real work email accounts. The lack of opsec is kind of stunning, don't people doing illicit things understand they should be secretive about it?

But when working with the true frontier AI, stuff like Claude Fable, the wildest thing to me is that I feel *gratitude* toward it when it helps me with a task and it is difficult for me not to waste tokens thanking it for its contribution.,

I still have mixed opinions about generative AI. I think there are things where it is wildly inappropriate (mostly creative tasks like art, music, and writing.)

They're mad because the owe their continued employment to the idea that only old milquetoast centrists are capable of being elected, and DSA is pointing out that this is a lie.

They truly do not understand that "we'll go back to the status quo!" is not an exciting message for the bulk of Americans anymore.

I've been using one for 10 years, honestly I think it seemed pretty normal after a couple of weeks.

It reminds me of the time Amazon tried to train an AI on Amazon employee resumes to identify good prospects for hiring, and the first thing the AI noticed was "Looks like almost all Amazon engineers are men, so step 1 is to throw out all the resumes with female names."

Thanks to iPhone autocorrect, my dad texted me "The trump administration, as you are painfully aware, is just a bunch of incompetent morons with ass Kissinger abilities. Sad, sad, sad." I know he meant ass-kissing abilities, but now "Ass Kissinger" is Pete Hegseth's new nickname.

Sure, they're very effective, but how can Lockheed Martin and Northup Grumman make tens of billions of dollars off those? It's like all these socialized medicine systems in other countries -- they never answer how insurance companies can make billons that way. Think of the corporations!

It's so good. I recommend it to any sci-fi fan... except the ones who don't like political intrigue, as this book has like 5 different political intrigue plots *each* of which would be enough to hang an entire novel on.

The difference is that Democrats would vote for banning gerrymandering nationwide, and only vote for it when necessary to counter Republicans. Why do unilateral disarmament? Meanwhile, Republicans will never vote to ban gerrymandering.

They have found the right problem but are hanging it on the wrong source. Is people celebrating violence like this a degradation of society? Yes! So let's look at what CEOs and corporations are doing that alienates people _so much_ that violence against them looks justified to so many people.

Brilliant strategist here. 1.) first, aggressively alienate all your allies for no reason. 2.) second, launch an unprovoked war that gets them shot at and drives their oil prices way up. 3.) now beg them to help out of the goodness of their hearts. Can't see how it would fail!

Also, they're neck-deep in bots. The propaganda bots meant to spread right-wing crap meet the algorithm meant to surround people with the content that engages them. Normal people block/ignore the bots and see less... the right-wingers see more and more. Their own disinformation machine buries them.

In Iceland, police never killed anyone. In Germany, with 1/4 of US population, they killed 265 in the entire 21st century, about what US police kill every 2 months. Every time we hear "police killed an innocent person," we should realize that police aren't supposed to kill guilty people either.

It doesn't need to be in a _bad_ place. It just needs to be in a place that's both liberal and also has no tolerance for bullshit. Brooklyn or Queens? South Boston? Pittsburgh?

On the other hand, it'll would them 40,000 years to reach another star... if they were aimed at the nearest one, which they're not. By that time I wouldn't be surprised if we've sent something faster that gets there before they do. Plus our EM radiation runs far ahead of them.

Yeah, the mother in "A Sorceress Comes to Call" is one of the most terrifying villains I've read because she's not the dramatic Evil Overlord villain, she's an abusive narcissistic parent, which is a kind of evil we actually encounter in real life. Then you give her magical powers and it gets worse.

Not honestly that surprising to me. A lot of "libertarians" are really just conservatives that want to smoke pot, but some of them are actually libertarians.
000
Fishsupreme @fishsupreme.bsky.social · 29/11/2025
This is honestly why I stopped being a libertarian 10 years ago - the realization that AI will be the end of work, and capitalism has no answer for what to do next when there is no need for the bulk of humanity to work, and nothing they can do that will produce enough value to warrant a living wage.

I also don't know how much anyone outside of old Democratic consultants actually wants this. I think they're fixated on "how can we win the mythical centrist voter who thinks Trump and Harris are about equally acceptable" and think this is how, not realizing that their own voters are not intersted.

She's animated output backed by a large technical team, and is directed like a special effects studio, not like an actor. The fact that she's the output of AI tools and data scientists rather than 3d modeling tools and graphic artists is irrelevant!

The whole "Tilly Norwood, AI actress" hype is so dumb. It's just PR, and transparently dumb PR. She's not an actress! She's not a conscious entity, she's an animated construct! She's no more an actress than Jesse from Toy Story is an actress!

I just looked it up... it's not even a real pizza place! Hunt Brothers Pizza is apparently a by-the-slice kiosk inside gas station convenience stores, and they're counting it as a pizza chain.

Why does every Democratic think tank always think the way to win elections is to be Republicans? Republicans don't win elections by moving toward the center. The country is so divided now there _are_ no centrist voters; you win election by getting your base to actually vote.

But saying "we're afraid if a progressive wins the primary, they'll lose the general to a moderate" sounds better than "we're afraid if a progressive wins the primary, they'll win and prove political conventional wisdom is no longer accurate, and then nobody will ever listen to us again."

Fishsupreme @fishsupreme.bsky.social · 26/08/2025
They want to win elections, but Democratic leadership -- milquetoast neoliberal compromisers who think "maintain the status quo" is an inspiring rallying cry -- are terrified of electing candidates that somebody actually likes, and thus being sidelined forever.

I love Crimson Peak, but when recommending it to people I always describe it as "It's not really horror, it's Gothic -- it's using the visual motifs of horror but it's not actually scary." The cinematography is fantastic, I think studios just didn't know how to market a Gothic non-horror film.

I wouldn't consider it silly. I mean, statistically it *is* still the safest way to travel, so the fear isn't correct or rational - but I also wouldn't dismiss it as "silly" when recent government decisions are substantiality increasing the (still very small) risk of air travel.
