Manythank as always! One of my fav things about Silksong is that, without ever returning to Hallownest, it confirms that Ghost's actions mattered--not just to the fate of Pharloom, but to Hornet herself. So it's fun continuing to play in that space in the comic!

(2/4) To Bind Our Echoes That We May Be Whole A Hollow Knight Fancomic Chapter 11: Mask Maker, Mask Maker, Make Me A Mask #HollowKnight #Silksong
A multi-panel black and white comic featuring the Mask Maker from Hollow Knight and Lace and Phantom from Hollow Knight Silksong. Lace informs the Mask Maker that she doesn't believe herself capable of fitting any mask, citing Phantom's ultimate fate (and implying that Lace had been the one to fetch their mask in the first place in a failed attempt to avert that end). The Mask Maker states that Lace was failed, and that he sees in her the potential for growth and change. Lace rejects this, stating that she is only capable of decay.

Lace: I doubt you could recommend any better; I was intended for no identity beyond my creator’s.
Mask Maker: I see… you have been failed, then.
Lace: Not I, but one alike. The mask I fetched them did not prevent their unraveling.
Mask Maker: It grieves me to learn, but the mask was not to what I referred.
Mask Maker: To be denied such that you believe you lack the capacity to change… you have been failed Old One.
Lace: Ahahaha! Showing deference despite first naming me a child… How gauche. Whatever godhood you perceive is but my mother’s fading light.
Mask Maker: Not divinity, but life in abundance, and with it great potential for growth.
Lace: there is no growth for one such as I… only decay.A multi-panel black and white comic featuring Hornet and the Mask Maker from Hollow Knight and Lace from Hollow Knight Silksong. Lace's conversation with the Mask Maker is interrupted by Hornet's return. Hornet declares that she will use the Needolin to summon her sibling's echoes, calling the melody the Requiem for Remembrance. She asks the Mask Maker to offer the first of these echoes, and as the song plays, snippets of conversation from the first game can be heard.

Mask Maker: Ah… I sense a clarity of vision.
Hornet: Indeed. A melody I shall give to attune my soul and call forth their missing pieces– A Requiem for Remembrance.
Hornet: You keep many memories, as Maker of Masks. Will you share with me their echo?
Mask Maker: It would be an honor.
Echoes [Mask Maker]: Does it know of the face that hides beneath? Such remarkable contrast the Wyrm conceived. I see another takes the mantle of king? then grim responsibility that shall bestow. Has it witnessed that truth most tragic?A multi-panel black and white comic featuring Hornet and the Mask Maker from Hollow Knight and Lace from Hollow Knight Silksong. As the requiem winds down, ghostly images of the Mask Maker's interactions with Ghost appear. A single key phrase emerges: Not task for I, but aid, gift to a world deserving. Afterwards, Hornet thanks the Mask Maker, but he has already donned a new mask and is lost to his ramblings once more. Hornet turns to leave, but is startled when Lace corrects her and demands Hornet refer to her by her name. Hornet recovers quickly, stating that there is work to be done, and departing.

Echoes [Mask Maker]: Not task for I, but aid, gift to a world deserving.
Hornet: Ithank you for your service, Mask Maker. come, child.
Lace: Lace.
Hornet: Come, Lace. there is work still left to do.

(1/4) To Bind Our Echoes That We May Be Whole A Hollow Knight Fancomic Chapter 11: Mask Maker, Mask Maker, Make Me A Mask #HollowKnight #Silksong
A multi-panel black and white comic featuring Hornet, the Pale King, and Mask Maker from Hollow Knight. The chapter opens in the middle of a conversation between Hornet and Hallownest's Mask Maker. Hornet proposes creating a new mask for Ghost, comparing the transformation to the Pale King's shedding of his Wyrm body, which the Mask Maker initially rejects, believing that she lacks the power to bind the Lord of Shades. He then realizes that this is meant as an offer rather than a trap, and questions her motives.

Mask Maker: So she has learned its fate and now would see it undone. Impossible, impossible… no more reversible than death a transformation of such scale.
Hornet: Nay Maker. Not undone, but remade, as our sire before, to walk again among mortal bugs.
Mask Maker: To follow in the tread of the Wyrm? But the void has no shell to shed.
Hornet: And so I shall forge their mask anew.
Mask Maker: Is it vanity or madness which drives you to eclipse even the Wyrm’s great folly? To believe your nascent strength enough to bind the Lord of Shades?
Mask Maker: No… you propose inanity far beyond a simple snare. You would entreat the God of Gods to cede its power willingly.
Hornet: I will pay whatever price you ask.
Mask Maker: By duty I am compelled: For this kingdom’s faceless, I shall provide. So I charge you only answer me in truth: Why?A multi-panel black and white comic featuring Hornet, the Knight (called ghost), the Radiance, the Hollow Knight (called Hollow), and the Shade Lord. Hornet explains her motives: her belief that Ghost's ascension was not motivated by a desire for power, but to free Hollow without killing them. She expresses gratitude, and admits that she doesn't know whether they would even want to come back.

Hornet: My sibling… was meant to be nothing. One failed vessel among thousands damned to that abyssal hatch-grave.
Hornet: They owed no duty to kingdom or crown. Less, to the blood that so cruelly betrayed them.
Hornet: Yet still they answered that desperate call from beyond the waste, seeking not recompense but to render aid. Though I know not the mechanism of their ascension, I know its cause. It was no bid for power but a desperate defiance of their fated path, to lay at last the past to rest and see freed our birth-cursed sibling by other means than death.
Hornet: Their gambit cost me dearly… But their victory gifted me both future and family… and for that… I am grateful.
Hornet: Perhaps they are wholly satisfied with this end, and it is self-conceit to presume otherwise. Perhaps it is an offer made in vain.A multi-panel black and white comic featuring Hornet, the Knight (called Ghost, Grimmchild, Weaverlings, Elderbug, the Shade Lord, and the Mask Maker from Hollow Knight. Hornet continues her explanation, stating her believe that they are and were kind, that there are people still waiting for them to come home, and that she believes she has the power to at least offer them the chance to return. The Mask Maker, seemingly satisfied with her answer, jumps straight to business, explaining that she needs three things: a mask, a seal, and a focus. Hornet expresses confusion at the mention of a focus, to which the Mask Maker explains it necessary to isolate Ghost from the legion that comprises the Shade Lord.

Hornet: But regardless, I must offer… because they were kind, and I have cause to believe them kind still. Because they made a home of Hallownest and it eagerly awaits them yet.
Hornet: I must offer because I might succeed, where others failed to try.
Hornet: …
Mask Maker: What you propose is a construct of three: a mask to anchor the soul; a seal to maintain the void; and a focus to define the self.
Hornet: The mask and seal I anticipated, the focus I did not.
Mask Maker: It is redundant for most, even a faceted soul like yours, but the Lord of Shades is plural by nature. To bring to the fore the sibling you seek, you must remind it once more of who it was.A multi-panel black and white comic featuring Hornet, the Pale King, and Mask Maker from Hollow Knight.Hornet asks the Mask Maker how she might create the focus, to which the Mask Maker states that he does not know and encourages Hornet to find the solution herself. Hornet begs a moment to contemplate this, and the scene shifts to Lace, who has been present and listening this entire time. Lace notices the mask that Hornet had presumably knocked from the Mask Maker (off screen) lying on the ground. When she picks it up and examines it, the Mask Maker interjects that it does not suit her.

Hornet: How might it be done?
Mask Maker: Such spellwork sets well beyond my ken… but you are the child of Weaver and Wyrm and command power over memory.
Mask Maker: By your sibling’s hand came great change to these lands. The echoes of its actions ring into our present. Call out to them… gather them to you, in whatever way you can.
Hornet: I ask a moment, Maker, to contemplate your words.
Mask Maker: I fear that mask would fit you poorly, child.

Cooldown for this chapter is a properly illustrated cover for my #HollowKnight #Silksong Fancomic: To Bind Our Echoes That We May Be Whole! I tend not to think in color for this comic. That and the switch to a more painterly style, made this a bit of a challenge. I like how it turned out though!
Color illustration featuring Hornet, Lace, the Green Prince, and Shakra from Hollow Knight Silksong. All four stand centered, with Hornet at the front, using her needle as the Needolin. She stands atop a dark, reflective surface, which ripples out beneath her before void tendrils emerge from it, framing the lower half of the image. The upper half of the image is framed instead by Everbloom vines, lined with delicate flowers. At the top, a title reads: To Bind Our Echoes That We May Be Whole. At the bottom, the text reads: A Hollow Knight Silksong Fancomic By FireflySummers.Color illustration featuring Hornet, Lace, the Green Prince, and Shakra from Hollow Knight Silksong. Indeed! Fun fact: while most of the dialogue is written expressly for this comic, Hornet's monologue about her mother's victory is an adaptation of a long-established ramble I've done for my now-beta readers, and thus significantly predates the comic. I was cooking though, so in it went!

Shakra was never originally in this story bc her arc was so well concluded in the game. But I added her anyways, bc I love her, and her importance as a grounding POV outside the bs of the gods has just emerged naturally.

(4/4) Also, Shakra left the party because she can’t see in the dark like Hornet (and apparently Lace) can, and needs to go buy a Lumafly lantern. Hope she’s been saving up her Geo! (At least the inflation isn’t nearly as bad as Pharloom…)

(2/4) To Bind Our Echoes That We May Be Whole A Hollow Knight Fancomic Chapter 10: Loathe the Way They Light Candles in Rome (But Love the Sweet Air of the Votives) #HollowKnight #Silksong
A multi-panel black and white comic featuring Hornet from Hollow Knight, and Shakra from Hollow Knight Silksong. With Hornet's tale concluded, Shakra asks if she intends to tell her mother anything. Hornet replies that Herrah is not here, while producing a rosary necklace and approaching her mother's shrine. Shakra declares that they will do a song-sending (comedically startling Hornet into breaking her rosary necklace). The two perform their music, Hornet thinking on what message she would send her mother. The shrine is now decorated with the rosaries Hornet brought with her from Pharloom.

Shakra: Have you any words to tell her?
Hornet: For what reason? She is not here.
Shakra: Poshanka! Then let our song-sending carry your message to wherever her spirit hunts free.
Hornet: ….
Hornet [thoughts]: Mother… Rest well. Rest proud. I sought the hope you saw beyond… and it has brought me home at last.A multi-panel black and white comic featuring Hornet from Hollow Knight, and Shakra and Lace from Hollow Knight Silksong. Outside the Distant Village, Shakra and Hornet converse. Hornet thanks Shakra for her company. Shakra notes that she's not equipped for traverse Deepnest at the moment, and leaves the party with the intention of gathering supplies. Afterwards, Hornet turns to Lace, who is looking contemplatively at the Distant Village from the ledge. As they depart for the depths of Deepnest, Lace asks Hornet how it feels to be wanted, and Hornet tells her that it's lonely.

Hornet: Thank you, dear friend. Your company helped ease my grief for a time.
Shakra: You honored me with your request. But I must take my leave. I am… ill-equipped to traverse these tunnels at present.
Shakra: I will seek supplies before attempting to further navigate.
Hornet: Be well. though doubtless our paths will cross again soon… I have business yet to attend.
Hornet: ….
Lace: ….
Hornet: Are you coming, child?
Lace: ….
Lace: …Tell me, spider.
Lace: What is it like, to be so wanted? To be so… cherished?
Hornet: ….
Hornet: …Lonely.

(1/4) To Bind Our Echoes That We May Be Whole A Hollow Knight Fancomic Chapter 10: Loathe the Way They Light Candles in Rome (But Love the Sweet Air of the Votives) #HollowKnight #Silksong
A multi-panel black and white comic featuring Hornet and Midwife from Hollow Knight, and Shakra and Lace from Hollow Knight Silksong. Hornet, Lace, and Shakra arrive at the Distant Village and the entrance to the Beast's Den. Inside, they find Midwife conversing with a couple Little Weavers and Stalking Devout. Midwife immediately recognizes Hornet and greets her warmly, updating her briefly on the state of Deepnest before attempting to take a bite out of Shakra and Lace. Hornet puts an end to this behavior with one of her iconic slaps. This delights Midwife, and she directs the party on to Herrah's Shrine.

Midwife: Oh ho ho ho! Familiar tremors grace the threads of our nest.
Hornet: You look well, Midwife.
Midwife: Ever considerate, dear princess. Deepnest limps along, but Dola and I sleep with bellies full… and so have little room for complaint.
Midwife: However… I wouldn’t dream of rejecting such tender morsels so generously gifted– ACK!!
Midwife: Heehee! I see your journey has taught you no new respect for your elders. Delightful. Go on then. Best not keep your mother waiting.A multi-panel black and white comic featuring Hornet and the Pale King from Hollow Knight, and Shakra and Lace from Hollow Knight Silksong. Hornet, Lace, and Shakra arrive at Herrah's shrine, a large but simple stone effigy of Herrah on her throne, surrounded by candles, in the room where she once laid as a Dreamer. Shakra asks Hornet to tell her story, and Hornet recounts the story of the plague. However, as she does so, she mentally draws direct parallels to her own actions in Pharloom.

Shakra: Ah. A humble shrine that tells tale of a ruler still esteemed. Will you not speak her to life?
Hornet: I have little skill as a weaver of words.
Hornet: …
Hornet: …. There was a plague. A horrible, desperate play by a goddess scorned, whose festering light fouled soul and shell ‘til all was ruin and rot.
Hornet: …. There was a plan. A horrible, desperate play by a god-king damned, whose vain hope saw him gamble fate to spare a realm beloved.A multi-panel black and white comic featuring Hornet, Monomon, Lurien, and Herrah from Hollow Knight, and Lace from Hollow Knight Silksong. Hornet continues telling Lace and Shakra her story. She describes the Vessel Plan without directly mentioning Hollow, and moves on to the role of the Dreamers. Lace, alarmed at mention of the Void, openly derides the plan for its foolishness, to which Hornet agrees. Hornet posits that her mother, too, knew that the plan would fail, but participated regardless. Lace demands why, only to realize that Hornet, somehow, must be the answer.

Hornet: He fashioned a trap: A vessel of void fit to bind that blinding light…
Lace: !!!
Hornet: An enchantment sealed thrice:
Hornet: “To protect the Vessel, the Dreamers lay sleeping.”
Hornet: Monomon the Teacher. Lurien the Watcher. And Queen Herrah the Beast. My… my mother.
Lace: Foolishness. To think any binding could hold true against a goddess’s wrath.
Hornet: Indeed. Ultimately, the king’s plan proved folly…
Hornet: … and did naught but slow the inevitable collapse. But… I believe my mother suspect that end, and took up the charge regardless.
Lace: Why!? Why knowingly resign herself to death in a failed god’s name? What could she possibly stand to…
Lace: …gain?
Lace: ….
Lace: …Ah.
Lace: Ahahaha! Of course.A multi-panel black and white comic featuring Hornet, the Pale King, the White Lady, and Herrah from Hollow Knight, and Lace from Hollow Knight Silksong. Hornet continues her tale to Lace and Shakra. Hornet posits that Herrah's plan was simply to buy enough time for Hornet herself to mature and defend herself against the imminent threat of Silk. Hornet corrects Lace's assumption that her mother did this to groom her into a god-killer, stating instead that Herrah's only goal was Hornet's survival and happiness--and that in doing so, she had won.

Hornet: My mother bargained not for the eternity promised, but for time enough.
Hornet: Time enough under protection of Wyrm and guidance of Root.
Hornet: Time enough to hone my needle against greater threats to come.
Lace: She bore a weapon, a slayer of gods.
Hornet: She bore a daughter… My god-slaying was incidental. Her only wish was that I live… fully and freely.
Lace: How… magnanimous.
Hornet: How wise.
Hornet: Queen Herrah was no deity, no scholar, no priest.
Hornet: A beast they named her, yet she alone triumphed against both gods and fate. Though she did not live to see her wish fulfilled… my mother won.

(2/5) To Bind Our Echoes That We May Be Whole A Hollow Knight Fancomic Chapter 9: Trust Treads the Line Between Wisdom and Folly #HollowKnight #Silksong
A multi-panel black and white comic featuring Hornet, the Hollow Knight (called Hollow), and the White lady from Hollow Knight, the Green Prince and Lace from Hollow Knight Silksong, and Vise, an original character. Vise is a tall, broad praying mantis wearing a cloak and necklace. Vise and Hornet continue talking at the bench in Mantis Village, seemingly oblivious to the Green Prince now listening in. Vise asks Hornet about whether or not the White Lady is bad, and Hornet gives a frank assessment of her culpability in cruelty and neglect, while also trying to be kind and do better. We see flashbacks of the White Lady lovingly holding the Pale King, another with a young Hornet perched on her lap, and a third with her healing the injured Hollow Knight. The scene then shifts to the White Lady in her Gardens, her attention drawn to where Lace is practicing with her pin.

Vise: The Lady… Is she truly so terrible?
Hornet: ….
Hornet: …she is a being both ancient and alien, whose survival oft necessitates indifference or cruelty.
Hornet: But in equal parts has sure sought to reject that nature. Imperfectly… Tragically… Time and time again… she chooses to love.A multi-panel black and white comic featuring the White Lady from Hollow Knight and Lace from Hollow Knight Silksong. Lace notices the White Lady and greets her with a semi-sarcastic curtsy, explaining that she grew bored of watching Shakra work on maps. She laments losing her martial skills during a peacetime, to which the White Lady commiserates, mentioning that her Gardens are missing their guardian. Lace assumes that the Lady speaks of Hollow, resulting in the White Lady reacting emotionally and shutting down that thought.

Lace: To what do I owe this audience, your majesty?
The White Lady: There is no occasion…
The White Lady: …merely surprise to find you apart from your friends.
Lace: My companion is skilled in song and scrivening, but unlike some… I find no entertainment watching ink dry… so I sought to create my own.
Lace: I fear this serenity will leave dull both I and my pin.
The White Lady: It would be a shame to blunt such keenness, when for so long my Gardens have felt the loss of their protector.
Lace: There were none to assume the mantle of Hollow the Knight?
The White Lady: No.
The White Lady: ….
The White Lady: they were never mine.A multi-panel black and white comic featuring the White Lady from Hollow Knight and Lace from Hollow Knight Silksong. The White Lady clarifies that she was referring to the Dryya, one of the previous Five Great Knights of Hallownest. She compares Lace to Dryya favorably, before suddenly being reminded of Dryya's death defending her many years before. The White Lady then changes the subject to the upcoming journey to Deepnest, and asks Lace to be careful. Lace assumes that the Lady is calling her weak, and implying her incapable, causing her to snap back angrily before walking away.

The White Lady: I speak of Dryya of the Five… one of the Great Knights of that Kingdom Gone.
The White Lady: Fierce and wise was she… though with your skill, I could see you her apprentice, if not her peer.
The White Lady: ….
The White Lady: …you intend to accompany the Gendered Child to Deepnest, do you not?
The White Lady: I would urge caution. Danger lurks beyond my verge–
Lace: Please. Spare me your condescension.
Lace: Do you issue the spider such inane warnings? Or is this concern exclusive to one such as I?
Lace: I was spun to life in the Weavers’ Cradle– I will not shrink from whatever poor imitation exists in these lands.

A multi-panel black and white comic featuring Hornet from Hollow Knight, and Vise, an original character. Vise is a tall, broad praying mantis wearing a cloak and necklace. Hornet sits at the bench in Mantis Village, playing her Needolin. Vise leans over one shoulder from behind, asking whether she considers him foolish. Hornet surmises that he's asking why she didn't defend herself against the Prince's allegations, and argues that the Prince was correct in his wariness, alleging that Vise overlooks the danger of the gods because of his familiarity. She begins playing the Needolin's enthralling magic.

Vise: …Auntie? Do you think me a fool?
Hornet: At times. But I consider it one of your better qualities.
Hornet: …. *sigh*
Hornet: You wish to know why I did not speak for myself against the Prince’s accusations. Had you witnessed the devastation wrought upon his lands, I doubt you would be so quick to come to my defense.
Vise: …but you–
Hornet: Your personal affection for I and my kin blinds you to our imminence.
Hornet: You think us benign… benevolent even.. you may even be correct.
Hornet: However.A multi-panel black and white comic featuring Hornet from Hollow Knight, and Vise, an original character. Vise is a tall, broad praying mantis wearing a cloak and necklace. Vise is caught in Hornet's silk magic enthrallment as she continues to emphasize the danger gods pose to mortals. Once released, Vise nearly collapses, visibly trembling. However, he recovers quickly.

Hornet: As a prospective leader of this tribe, it is imperative you never forget–
Vise: !?

Hornet: A god’s blessing is oft indistinguishable from its curse.

SFX: snap snap snap
Vise: ….
Vise: …though a fool in full I may seem, I have met with ill intent throughout my life, and know well the tenor of spite…A multi-panel black and white comic featuring Hornet and the Hollow Knight (called Hollow) from Hollow Knight, and Vise, an original character. Vise is a tall, broad praying mantis wearing a cloak and necklace. Vise counters Hornet's arguments by clarifying that he doesn't trust her and Hollow because of godlike power, but because he'd personally witnessed their struggles in the aftermath of the Radiance. We see a flashback of Vise as a Mantis Petra watching Hornet attempting to manage Hollow's wounds, before noticing his presence. He mentions that they were kind to him, and states that he will take the risk of foolishness in exchange for her wisdom. He diverts the conversation away from Hornet and Hollow to ask about the White Lady instead.

Vise: My confidence is not so easily won.
Vise: I give my trust not to some great and mighty god…
Vise: But to the warrior who willingly sacrificed body and mind to stay a plague…
Vise: …and to the sister who wept…
Vise: …and toiled…
Vise: …to see them whole.
Vise: You proffered kindness to an orphaned traitor’s child…
Vise: Do you deny it now?
Hornet: …no.
Vise: Then I shall gladly risk playing the fool, to keep your wisdom and council, Auntie.
Vise: A final question, if I may be so bold–

I headcanon that the cloaks we see on all Vessels are a specialized kind of leaf. They are half Wyrm and half Root; they had to have gotten something from their mother after all. Pretentious details in the alt text. #hollowknight #hollowknightfanart
A diagram of an adult Vessel, displaying the origin point of its leaf cloak. The exoskeleton of a Vessel is primarily composed of (situationally void-tempered) Wyrm Chitin, an almost impossibly rigid substance, with ball-joints of Root to allow flexibility and dexterous movement. In a tempered vessel, Void replaces much of what would have been their internal anatomy or 'bug guts', with thin tendrils of Pale Root essentially stringing it together internally. The exposed Root at the joints is capable of producing leaves, starting with the joint at the base of the neck. A vessel's 'cloak' is therefore a specialized kind of leaf, not a disconnected garment as often assumed. The condition of this outer leaf is often the most accurate indicator of a Vessel's health and wellbeing, as symptoms of illness or injury often appear in the leaf first. The hypothetical regrowth process for a severely damaged Vessel leaf cloak, demonstrated in six steps.
Step 1; Carefully prune off the damaged remnants of the old leaf. This allows the Vessel to focus its resources on new growth rather than trying to salvage what remains. This is, in essence, 'cleaning the wound.'
Step 2; The initial regrowth will appear as a bulb around the base of the neck. The outer leaf grows first, and when a second leaf begins to form internally, that first leaf will eventually open.
Step 3; The two leaves present at this stage can be called the Collar and the Cape. The cape serves as defense and camouflage; it is both critical and often damaged, and is designed to be dropped and replaced in a normal life cycle. A vessel grows at least two leaves; one primary Cape leaf and a backup Collar. When a cape becomes badly damaged, a second collar leaf will sprout under the first; the cape drops off, and the bigger collar opens up to become the new cape.
Step 4; The cape growth focuses on length first; this stage of growth is defined by long thin segments with deep notches between them. The single leaf can often appear more as long grasslike tendrils at this stage. Proper nutrition is critical at this stage of growth, as inadequacies in the Vessel's environment can easily damage or stunt the growth.
Step 5; The Vessel's main leaf-cloak has finished growing when the individual leaf tendrils fatten and the gaps between them close up. The finished leaf will fully envelop the Vessel's body, leaving their mask and hands exposed.
Step 6; Maintenance! With a fully expressed primary leaf cloak, a well-maintained Vessel may sprout leaves from other growth nodes on its body. It is somewhat imperative that a Vessel prune this overgrowth, as it can aversely impact their dexterity and flexibility. A fluffy Vessel can be very pretty and decorative, but it's important that it be able to defend itself or escape danger.

A multi-panel black and white comic featuring the Green Prince from Hollow Knight: Silksong and Vise, an original character. Vise is a tall, broad praying mantis wearing a cloak and necklace. The Green Prince snaps at Vise for his perceived naive attitude towards the gods.

Vise: …the Lady is an ally, one I thought we shared.
The Green Prince: Ally or no, she is a god. No good ever comes of drawing their gaze.
The Green Prince: Did you mistake me a wanderer? An adventurer? I am neither. Because of them, I am a prince without a people, orphan of a land lost to all memory but my own. Because of them, I am nothing.
The Green Prince: So ally with them if you must– But know this: They will take everything, and they will not ask.A multi-panel black and white comic featuring the Green Prince from Hollow Knight: Silksong and Vise, an original character. Vise is a tall, broad praying mantis wearing a cloak and necklace. The Green Prince regains his composure and apologizes for his outburst. Vise accepts his critique, and calls an end to the meeting. Before they can exit, the Green Prince is called back to the Mantis Lord, who wishes to speak to him.

Vise: ….
The Green Prince: ….
The Green Prince: I… I don’t…
The Green Prince: Forgive my forwardness.
Vise: …no, you honored my ask… now I will honor your answer and think on your words. for now, prior orders hold. Attend the borders…
The Mantis Lord: ….
Vise: I and my guard will take the lead investigating matters in Deepnest.
Vise: The meeting is adjourned.
The Mantis Lord: Foreign Lord, named kin.
The Mantis Lord: I would have us speak.

(1/3) To Bind Our Echoes That We May Be Whole A Hollow Knight Fancomic Chapter 8: Is It The Light You Fear, Or What It Might Illuminate #HollowKnight #Silksong
A multi-panel black and white comic featuring Lace and Shakra from Hollow Knight: Silksong, the Hollow Knight (called Hollow) from Hollow Knight. The three sit in the Queen's Gardens, Lace and Hollow observing Shakra working on her maps. Lace questions why Shakra doesn't simply abscond to Elder Hu's gravesite in the Fungal Wastes, citing her comfort traveling through Pharloom. Shakra chides her, explaining that it would jeopardize Hornet's alliances, that Hallownest is not cursed like Pharloom (which makes Hollow flinch), and that she has no trouble resting. Lace, dissatisfied with Shakra's advice, informs her that she is older and asks to be honored as such. Hollow agrees to this, which Lace immediately shuts down.

Lace: So… why are we shilly-shallying about?
Shakra: Hornet-Wielding-Needle–
Lace: Yes, yes… I know what the spider would do. But why wait?
Lace: You never hesitated in ransacking my kingdom. Surely for so savvy a wayfinder, the fungal expanse poses no more threat than Bilewater’s detritus.
Shakra: Dondakku! Even if such conduct would not jeopardize my friend’s alliance, this is no cursed land whose denizens attack with mindless abandon.
Shakra: It is no burden, child-wielding-pin, to rest… to reflect. It is a gift.
Lace: ….finding your “wisdom” dull does not mark me a child. In fact… I suspect I am very much your senior. You really ought to show me proper respect.
Hollow (signing): Okay!
Lace: No.A multi-panel black and white comic featuring Hornet from Hollow Knight, and Vise, an original character. Vise is a tall, broad praying mantis wearing a cloak and necklace. Hornet and Vise discuss the current political situation in the Fungal Wastes, including the increasing random attacks from Deepnest. Hornet ascertains (to her relief) that there is no new power that has emerged in the region, but is unable to speculate further on what is causing the attacks.

Vise: Entrances to the Fungal Uplands have been secured, with minor activity reported at the gates of the Weeping City. However, Deepnest remains our primary concern.
Hornet: Apprise me of the current situation.
Vise: Ten or so cycles past, a routine patrol was ambushed without warning by a dirtcarver swarm. We hoped the incident isolated… but attacks persist, crawling ever closer to our core.
Hornet: Do you believe these coordinated strikes?
Vise: No. Though they demonstrate a viciousness not seen since the days of the infection, they overwhelm by sheer numbers rather than strategy.
Hornet: Ah! That is… concerning.
Hornet: But it seems unlikely a new power has emerged to claim the region. Something else has slunk from the shadows to disturb their nests. But what, I cannot say.A multi-panel black and white comic featuring the Green Prince from Hollow Knight: Silksong, Hornet from Hollow Knight, and Vise, an original character. Vise is a tall, broad praying mantis wearing a cloak and necklace. Hornet explains why the Gardens haven't been similarly attacked, and informs Vise that she will be visiting Herrah's shrine soon, and will keep him informed should she find answers on that visit. Vise asks whether the White Lady would provide aid, but is interrupted by the Green Prince, who calls Vise a fool and criticizes him for looking to a goddess for help.

Vise: The Gardens are not similarly besieged?
Hornet: They make a poor target, so steeped in godlight. However, I go soon to tend my mother’s shrine; I will inform you, should answers present themselves.
Vise: In the interim, can nothing more be done? Perhaps the Lady might lend aid–
The Green Prince: Pah.
The Green Prince: I had feared you a dullard, but in truth you are a fool.
Helter: That’s out of line!
Vise: Peace, Helter. Our new friend has been naught but courteous ‘til now.
Vise: Insult or no, I would learn what provoked him so. Tell, then. What earned me so grand a title as fool?
The Green Prince: Mere disappointment that you so readily forsake your own tradition to chase pale grace.

Thank! One of my early design decisions was never to draw the Green Prince with his eyes closed (bc bug has no eyelids). I'll fudge things a little bit by changing the shape of his eyes slightly to help convey emotion, but as a result, in the end it all comes down to body language and composition.

ngl this entire comic started with me telling a friend "I think the Green Prince deserves a himbo mantis boyfriend," and then reverse engineering the conditions to get him there. The rest of the plot just kinda happened along the way.

(3/3) Looks like the Green Prince has finally stopped dissociating long enough to participate in the plot. It’s probably because of the Emotional Support Grubs. At any rate, it's mantis politics, ft. Vise, an OC mantis who until recently existed in my notes exclusively as “Himbo Mantis.”

(2/3) To Bind Our Echoes That We May Be Whole A Hollow Knight Fancomic Chapter 7: The Shape of a Future You Can’t Yet Grasp #HollowKnight #Silksong
A multi-panel black and white comic featuring the Green Prince from Hollow Knight: Silksong, Hornet from Hollow Knight, and Vise, an original character. Vise is a tall, broad praying mantis wearing a cloak and necklace. Hornet, the Green Prince, Vise, and his escort of mantises travel through the Fungal Wastes. As they travel, Vise flirts with the Green Prince, failing to get any certain answer as to his species. The Green Prince turns the conversation around and asks whether Vise is the prince of his tribe, which takes him aback.

Vise: So, foreign bug… From where do you hail, if not a distant tribe?
The Green Prince: Ah… but by your own decree, am I not a mantis?
Vise: Ha! You speak well, fair kin! However. Were it not so, what might you be?
The Green Prince: …I am a Verdanian.
Vise: Auntie, what is a Verdanian?
Hornet: Him. Clearly.
Vise: ….
The Green Prince: ….
The Green Prince: And you are the prince of these lands?
Vise: …I beg pardon?A multi-panel black and white comic featuring the Green Prince from Hollow Knight: Silksong, Hornet from Hollow Knight, and Vise, an original character. Vise is a tall, broad praying mantis wearing a cloak and necklace. The Green Prince's assumptions that Vise is nobility are disproved, with Hornet explaining some of the social structure in the Mantis Tribe. We see familiar shots of the Mantis Village, including Vise stopping to speak with other mantises while Hornet and the Green Prince look on. Vise is eventually accosted by a pair of mantis youths, who are excited at his return.

The Green Prince: They treat you as an heir apparent… so I had assumed you of royal descent.
Vise: ???
Hornet: The mantises swear fealty to neither god nor queen.
Hornet: Their rulers are elected by council, often based on demonstrations of leadership and martial skill–both arenas in which Vise excels. But the Lords have not ceded power.
The Green Prince: What stays his claws?
Hornet: The current stewards have held jurisdiction since my youth–longer than memory for many a mortal bug. Under their guidance, the tribe maintained sovereignty despite the encroachment of the Pale.
Mantis Youth: Vise! You’re back!
The Green Prince: So it is an issue of politic rather than strength– To depose a leader so regarded would reflect poorly, even in tradition’s name.
Vise: Denna! Mel! Claws! Claws! We’ve spoken about this!
Mantis Youth: But we missed you!A multi-panel black and white comic featuring the Green Prince from Hollow Knight: Silksong, Hornet and one of the Mantis Lords from Hollow Knight, and Vise, an original character. Vise is a tall, broad praying mantis wearing a cloak and necklace. Vise directs Hornet and the Green Prince to the arena where the Mantis Lords are encountered in the first game. However, the thrones sit abandoned, and instead Vise leads them to a doorway, where the remaining Mantis Lord rests. She towers over the other bugs, grown massive in age. Vise greets her cheerfully, Hornet neutrally, and the Green Prince with a degree of surprise.

The Green Prince: …

(1/3) To Bind Our Echoes That We May Be Whole A Hollow Knight Fancomic Chapter 7: The Shape of a Future You Can’t Yet Grasp #HollowKnight #Silksong
A multi-panel black and white comic featuring Lace and Shakra from Hollow Knight: Silksong, Hornet and the Hollow Knight (called Hollow) from Hollow Knight, and Vise, an original character. Vise is a tall, broad praying mantis wearing a cloak and necklace. Hornet speaks to Vise about securing Shakra passage through the Fungal Wastes, only to have it confirmed that travel has been restricted due to political uncertainty. Vise explains that only one of the three lords (encountered in the first game) is still alive, and that the successor has not been named. Hornet states that she had expected Vise to have ascended to the role by now, which Vise shrugs off. In the background, Hollow and Lace look after the local foliage. Lace is startled when a grub jumps out of the bushes at her.

Vise: A challenge to the Lords?
Hornet: Yes. My companion seeks passage through mantis territories… however, we have been informed that travel through the wastes is restricted at present.
Vise: You have been told true.
Vise: The Second passed during your absence. The Last remains strong in mind, but increasingly frail in body. Until a new Lord is named, our borders remain closed.
Hornet: Frankly, I had expected you to be Shakra’s opponent, Vise.
Vise: Alas, no. As bearer of the Mark, you know well the pride of my people–change does not come easy, and I will not prove the taint of my lineage by seizing power not freely given.A multi-panel black and white comic featuring Lace and the Green Prince from Hollow Knight: Silksong, Hornet and the Hollow Knight (called Hollow) from Hollow Knight, and Vise, an original character. Vise is a tall, broad praying mantis wearing a cloak and necklace. Lace, Hollow, and the Green Prince continue interacting with the grubs while the conversation between Hornet and Vise continues. Hornet declares her intent to visit the remaining Mantis Lord, which Vise agrees to, going so far as to invite the Green Prince. When Lace (holding a grub) demands to know why the prince has been invited, Vise indicates that he had assumed the Green Prince to also be a mantis. None of the other characters, including the Green Prince, confirm or deny this, leading Vise to double down to the other mantises present.

Hornet: Regardless, I should like to meet with your Lord, if only to declare my return to Hallownest. I would have your Guard as escort to avoid any undue confusion.
Vise: An excellent suggestion! Your presence would be most welcome!
Vise: And your green friend’s as well, should he wish to join us.
Lace: Wait! Why is he invited, but we are not!
Vise: …
Vise: …because he’s a mantis?
Hornet: ….
Lace: ….
Hollow: ?
Vise: …no?
The Green Prince: ….
Vise: …Helter, he’s a mantis.
Helter: As you say, sir.

(2/3) To Bind Our Echoes That We May Be Whole A Hollow Knight Fancomic Chapter 6: Finally Equipping that Compass You Bought #HollowKnight #Silksong
A multi-panel black and white comic featuring Lace, Hornet, the Green Prince, the Second Sentinel, Sherma, Flick, Pavo, Fleamaster Mooshka, Shrine Guardian Seth, Grishkin, the Bell Beast, a Beastling, and Seamstress from Hollow Knight Silksong, and the White Lady from Hollow Knight. Hornet misconstrues the White Lady's interest in Lace, only for the White Lady to reveal that she knows what Lace is, and that she does not view her as a threat. Hornet questions the morality of making Lace dependent upon her, and the White Lady brings up the souls that Hornet has bound to herself in Pharloom. Hornet points out that her survival hinged more on community and friendship than it did power alone, and notes that the Everbloom spun from the Red Memory was infused with the White Lady's magic. The White Lady confirms that she was aware of Hornet reaching for the flower, and that both she and Hollow had blessed it.

Hornet: Lace is of no threat to you, Lady.
The White Lady: No… she is far too frail, with that brittle shell of pale silk. Yet her fierce heart blazes, even to my wavering sight.
Hornet: Even knowing it would damn her, she cut herself free from her creator’s malignant web. When I chose to pull her from the void, I shouldered a duty to see her maintained.
The White Lady: It is honorable of you.
Hornet: … Or perhaps cruel, to bind her to myself, even figuratively.
The White Lady: Unlike the other souls bound within your shell?
Hornet: ….
The White Lady: I require neither explanation nor excuse, child. To exercise such power only speaks of the perils faced in the land of your foremothers.
Hornet: Power alone could not preserve me. Faith turned shield… Song turned care… Joy turned defiance of the end itself. I survived on strength borrowed of others. Including yours, Lady.
The White Lady: Mine and your sibling’s. The flower you spun of memory and soul carried the blessing of two gods. I feared even that might not be enough to sustain you in the dark.
Hornet: … it was not.A multi-panel black and white comic featuring Ghost as Abyss Given Form, Hornet, the White Lady, the Lord of Shades, and the Radiance from Hollow Knight. Hornet continues explaining that the Everbloom had failed in the end, and that she and Lace had been rescued by Ghost, implying that prior to this event, she had not known what became of Ghost. The White Lady recounts her perception of the end of the first Hollow Knight game, explaining that she felt the Radiance die, the Lord of Shades emerge, and then vanish back to the Abyss, which was sealed once again with the King's Brand. She asks Hornet what she intends to do, and Hornet replies that she aims to bring Ghost home.

Hornet: The bloom’s light failed before we reached the surface. We lived by the mercy of the void itself. Or rather, its Lord.
Hornet: Did you know? That this was their fate?
The White Lady: Nothing more than idle speculation.
The White Lady: Even bound, I felt the world shudder when the Old Light Fell, and the void rushed in to claim its right. That ancient, primordial god reborn, the Lord of Shades.
The White Lady: And then… it vanished… Without enacting its overdue vengeance, leaving naught by withering plague and collapsing dream.
The White Lady: The Abyss was sealed… the void sea calmed. With no trace of that vessel–
Hornet: Ghost.
The White Lady: …that Little Ghost.
The White Lady: … what is it you intend to do?
Hornet: I aim to restore them to us.A multi-panel black and white comic featuring Hornet, the White Lady, and the Pale King from Hollow Knight. The White Lady criticizes Hornet's plan, citing the dangers, but notes that Hornet is undeterred. She compares Hornet to her father, but pledges her support anyways, with a warning that she not be made to look the fool again. Hornet agrees to these conditions, and the White Lady grants her blessing to Hornet's newest quest.

The White Lady: You propose to reopen the Abyss… too invite that dark god back into our lands… to try to pluck a single shade from its legion. A fool’s errand… yet my censure does not deter.
Hornet: I fear not the impossible, Lady… else I would not stand before you now. My course is set.
The White Lady: You have your father’s bearing.
Hornet: An unwelcome comparison… And one I cannot determine as praise or condemnation.
The White Lady: It matters little. To place in you my faith, as I once did him… what you ask is no small thing. Yet my hope stirs anew. So for you, my daughter… and for the children I so callously cast away…
The White Lady: I will set aside my fear… my grief… do not prove me again a fool.
Hornet: I will not, Majesty.
The White Lady: Then it is enough.

(1/3) To Bind Our Echoes That We May Be Whole A Hollow Knight Fancomic Chapter 6: Finally Equipping that Compass You Bought #HollowKnight #Silksong
A multi-panel black and white comic featuring Lace and the Green Prince from Hollow Knight Silksong, and the Hollow Knight (called Hollow) from Hollow Knight. Lace attempts to confront Hollow in the aftermath of her dream and the reveal of Hollow's identity as the current God of Dreams. She goads them into attempting to speak, only to find that they physically and painfully struggle to do so. She backs down, and the two settle into a genial conversation, while the Green Prince watches from afar.

Lace: You.
Hollow: !?
Lace: You have some explaining to do.
Hollow: …
Hollow [signing]: Sorry to wake you.
Lace: That is not what I meant and you know it.
Lace: Really? You have nothing to say? I know you can talk.
Hollow: …. …Ah.
Hollow: S…ssssorry… Ssspeak-ing isss difff– diffffi– difffff– haaaard. I ammmm–
Lace: Stop!
Lace: Just… stop. If harm befalls you, the spider will unstitch me thread by thread.
Hollow [signing]: Sister likes you.
Lace: Do not start with that nonsense.A multi-panel black and white comic featuring Lace, Shakra, Hornet, and the Green Prince from Hollow Knight Silksong, and the Hollow Knight (called Hollow) and the White Lady from Hollow Knight. Shakra explains that Hornet has gone to visit the White Lady, and discusses with the Green Prince their expectations of Hallownest. She cites her rapport with Hornet as her motivator for accompanying her on this journey, but questions the Green Prince's motives. The conversation switches to the White Lady and Hornet, who are having a similar discussion.

The Green Prince: I am surprised at the Hunter’s absence from this interrogation.
Shakra (quoting Hornet): “They are old enough to manage the disasters of their own making.”
Shakra: So she spoke before departing for an audience with her pale mother.
The Green Prince: …
Shakra: …. You are ill at ease with this state of affairs.
The Green Prince: I had long ago heard tales of Hallownest, Kingdom Eternal. Truthfully, I suspected it another silken lie.
The Green Prince: I knew the spider for what she was… and I have witnessed before how the ceaseless appetites of beings pale leave naught but bile and bone.
The Green Prince: To walk peaceably among gods… such a feat staggers the mind.
Shakra: Hornet-wielding-needle has invariably proven herself my ally and friend. But you share no such bond, noble bug. Why then did you heed her call?
The White Lady: What wish is held for Hallownest?A multi-panel black and white comic featuring Lace, Shakra, Hornet, and the Green Prince from Hollow Knight Silksong, and the White Lady and one of the Mantis Lords from Hollow Knight. Hornet discusses her companions with the White Lady, revealing that she had not expected the Green Prince to take her up on her invitation, and stating that not even he knows what he wants at present. She explains Shakra's current goal to perform funeral rites for Elder Hu, whose grave is in the Fungal Wastes; the White Lady informs her of a political situation preventing easy travel in that direction, citing both changes in the Mantis Tribes and a resurgence of attacks from Deepnest. Hornet denies being a political representative of Deepnest, and the White Lady changes the topic to Lace.

Hornet: I suspect the answer unknown to even himself.
Hornet: His late addition to our party was… unexpected.
Hornet: I feared the grief sunk so deep that my words lacked power enough to reach him.
The White Lady: You diminish yourself, child.
The White Lady: The Beast needed not a god’s light to marshal her savage lands, but a fervency of spirit reflected by the magnitude of your own.
The White Lady: And what of the others? The warrior bears striking resemblance to another visitor, long ago.
Hornet: Elder Hu. He lived among the mantises before the Infection drove him to madness. Despite his violent end, his memorial is maintained. Shakra seeks to perform his final rites.
The White Lady: A noble endeavor, but one much impeded by present circumstance. Travel through the Fungal Wastes has been restricted, as the situation between the Mantis Tribes has evolved in your absence. Skirmishes at Deepnest’s borders intensify with every passing cycle.
Hornet: I am neither Deepnest’s queen nor its minister.
The White Lady: I understand. Regardless, your counsel would be welcome. But for now, the matter will keep. Tell me instead of the Pale Child you have brought under my boughs.
