Missed my point completely. But you kind of made one of your own, good job! In the USA, the funding for education and the funding for nutritional support in schools come from entirely different streams (departments of govt) and aren’t related. Schools don’t take money from programs to pay for food.

Oh, by the way, New Mexico—where I live— absolutely does not consider itself part of the South. It is part of the American Southwest. New Mexico wasn’t even a US State until 1912, long after the Civil war ended, nor was Oklahoma.

I would also add that the large and diverse native populations receive federal reimbursement for water rights stolen from native lands, and for social and health and cultural programs through the Indian Health Service, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and the Dept of Treasury. NM is a special case.

In an undivided country, this would make very little difference; we are all Americans. But the red states are also divisive, so this becomes and issue. I didn’t mind that more of my taxes went to other states until those states started targeting my state’s policies and priorities. Fuck that. 2/2

The argument is the most of the states that send more $$ to the feds in taxes than they take from the feds in funding are blue—and most of the states that take more federal funding than they pay to the feds in taxes and transfers, are red. So, red states are subsidised by blue states. 1/2
