Tuesday dinner beer! South Street Satan’s Pony. 5.3% amber ale, Charlottesville VA. Not always easy to find so another one I grab when I can. #bskybeer
On the left, a silver can with a black label. On the label are white and red lettering. It says “South Street Brewery since 1998” in white letters. Below that it reads “Satan’s Pony” in white and red. Across the left is a graphic of a rider on a motorcycle.

On the right is a curvy glass with a dark amber color beer and a tight foam cap.

Both are sitting on a grayish countertop with a window in the background.

One of my favorites, and not so easy to find. Harviestoun Old Engine Oil. 6%abv. Heavy duty black ale. I will grab something from this brewery every time I find it! This was a lucky grab in Winchester VA. #bskybeer
A can of beer, next to a glass on a grayish countertop.

On the left is a short tulip shape glass with a very dark nearly black beer. It has a slight cream colored head. Up close it is incredibly dark amber.

On the right is a can of Harviestoun’s Old Engine Oil. It is a black can with a white and yellow label and black lettering.

A wee homebrew. Baltic Porter, 5.25%. Chocolatey and malty, pretty darn smooth if I do say. Cheers! #bskybeer #homebrew
A small goblet glass, filled about 2/3rds with a dark almost black liquid and a creamy 1/4” or so of foam. The glass is sitting on concrete. In the background is green grass and my neighbors house. The glass has a barely visible logo reading “Brew Republic Bierwerks” and a star logo. The brewery is now defunct.

Prince William VA Tap handles!

On the left, a tall handle with green and black star graphics. At the top is the Brew Republic Bierwerks logo Star. Below on a red label is the flavor- Vanguard, an Irish Red ale. I worked as Cellarman at Brew Republic when it first opened. Did a lot of keg cleaning, but helped a fair amount with the brewing also. Learned a lot in 5 years or so. Would love to do it again! Maybe in retirement. Not sure what happened to the brewery, heard recently they were closing.

On the right is a rather plain Bad Wolf Brewing handle. The name is inspired by Dr Who. They were a small local brewery that was doing some fantastic stuff, packaging and local sales. There was a brown ale that was spectacular. I think they grew too quickly, and lost control of the vision. There were some changing hands for a while, and the beer suffered. Split up into a couple small breweries from there.

The oldest daughter, working her way through grad school by (checks notes) slinging merch for the Savannah Bananas. I guess that beats what I had to do. Kids have it so easy.
A tall blond female, wearing a blue Banana Ball tee shirt, in front of a baseball field.

The place is Gillette Stadium where the New England Patriots play. It is set up for baseball. The Savannah Bananas take their show on tour, and ask local college students to help with ticket sales and merch. She won’t be rich, but after 2 days of slinging tees she’ll make enough for food and incidentals for a couple weeks. Not bad for grad school.

White’s Bay, Lake Ontario. Henderson NY. Where I’ve spent part of my summers for the last 30 years. My daughters learned to sail here, and one is now a sail instructor. We’ve travelled all around the lake, across to Kingston and Ottawa and west to Niagara. Wouldn’t trade it.
Late morning view. Protected bay, no waves. Blue skies and blue waters. Sackett’s Harbor center left on the horizon. From the waterline. Cool and clear. From the waterline. How can you beat this? Actual lakeside view, Westcott’s (I think). Flat sandy beach, and you can walk out 100 yards before your belly gets wet when the weather is like this.

I think that if the ad execs at Coke had actually listened to the song, they would not in fact share a Coke (or their man) with Jolene. #RIPDolly
A Coke bottle from the 2016 ad campaign with the hashtag #shareacoke. The red label reads “Share a Coke with Jolene”.

This is an actual bottle that I had gotten. I thought I had saved the label, as some of them were stickers, but I guess this one was not. Sigh.

A hand holding a blue can in front a wooden facade.

The facade is Wolf Trap from the lawn. The stage is in the shadow below.

The beer is a Right Proper Haxan Robust Porter. The label is a slate blue with light blue lettering. The beer is tasty, a rich porter coming in at 7%.

My new (to me) Martin HD28. Man what a boomer! Love these herringbones. Just back from the shop for fretwork and a new nut. I replaced the bridge pins with bone (properly seated) and swapped the pixelated pickguard for a Holter. More in alt text.
A Martin guitar. Dreadnought shape. The color is light amber, with a brown swirl pickguard. The bridge is ebony and white bone pins with abalone dots.

This being secondhand from a dealer, I don’t really know the history. But I can guess. The first 5 frets had significant wear, but the rest of the frets were pristine. The neck is smooth. The headstock has a tan line where a string strap lived. The back has a stain in the finish, I think from sweat. There are chips in the binding finish. This guitar belonged to a singing cowboy who gigged.

There isn’t a pickup, with no indication it ever had one. Fairly certain it’s had a neck reset, which isn’t a surprise due to its age and the strap placement.

There is a center line crack below the bridge. The repair seems like a skilled amateur job - the cleats inside are well done, but the finish is blotchy and uneven.

Consuming mass quantities! Seems all the beer stores have disappeared, so I’ll go with what I can find in the grocery store. A 12 pack of Zero Gravity is always a good option! Cone Head 5.7% IPA with a view. #BskyBeer
On the left, a light blue can a green and yellow graphic of a hops cone. Black lettering reads Zero Gravity and Cone Head India Pale Ale. On the right is a pint glass with a medium yellow liquid and a foamy white head.

What a difference a day makes. Difficult to be outside, but also difficult to be inside. Henderson NY, on Lake Ontario.
Smoke from Canadian wildfires. Air quality was in the 300’s. The far point visible on the left is about half a mile, point on the right is about a quarter mile. All the weather apps said “visibility 3 miles”.24 hours later. Air quality still in the yellow at about 64. If you zoom in, the far shore is visible at about 5 miles.

Super local. Super good. Hard to read black letters on a very dark gray background! Discovered this brewery yesterday and can’t get enough. Lunkenheimer Craft Brewing, Weedsport NY. Details in alt. #BSkyBeer
Lunkenheimer Black River, black Kolsch-style ale. 5.2%abv. Canned March 18 2026.

On the left is a 16oz can, very dark gray label with pine tress at the bottom. In yellow is a drawing of a dog with grains, I’m told it’s the owners faithful brewery dog- she rescues Rhodesian ridgebacks. The word “Lunkenheimer” just below. In black block letters is “Black River”. At the bottom in yellow is “Black kolsch-style ale” and “Alcohol (alc) 5.2% by Volume (vol) 1 pint (16 fl oz).

To the right is a pint glass with a very dark beer with a foam head.

In the background is Lake Ontario, looking a lovely blue with not very cloudy sky above. Temps just below 80, and water temps are just right.

Summertime tuneups! Getting the bikes ready for wife and daughter. They fight over the Colnago. First one to the shed wins!
Two bicycles resting against a folding chair. They are in a carport, sunny green yard behind.

The red bike is an ancient Trek 1000 aluminum road bike. It’s in great shape both functionally and aesthetically. Just needs air in the tires and a little bit of love.

The Colnago is a Dream HP B-Stay of similar vintage. This was my daily driver for many years, and I kept upgrading it until I couldn’t anymore. 10 speed is all it has room for! But functionally sound, needs new tires but a clean up and she’s good to go!

New radio in the daughter’s Escape. Replacing the horrible Ford Sync that did a lot nothing very well. Cheap Amazon find replacement with everything you can ask for. Were the instructions bad? Yes. Did I break anything? No. Does it work? Yes.
A dashboard in pieces. In all fairness, everything I needed was in the box except clear instructions. YouTube to the rescue! All in all not bad for $170. A little bit of cutting non-structural plastic to accommodate wiring routing. I was surprised when the music I was playing on my outside speaker was suddenly playing inside the car.
It lives! Fairly clean setup. Very clear and colorful backup camera. This is the Ford factory installed camera tied into the new radio. Below is the old CD player slot. It now being empty, and with nothing to put in it, I used it for the mic and the 2 USB ports that came with the radio. Not sure where else I could put them without cutting or drilling.

A sign reading “Dive into D’Rocco’s Backyard” over Patriot Diving”. The sign is light blue over white with black letters. It’s hung over an alley with white railings on the building to the left and a brick wall on the right. People are standing by a pop up tent selling beer, whine and mixed drinks. Beyond that is the “backyard” set up with a performance space and seating for patrons.Me on the left and Kevin on the right. We are holding still clean guitars as we were getting started. The afternoon topped out at about 100F. At least we had shade and cold drinks from our hosts!I get to wander a bit with the wireless. Thanks to Kara for the photos! Some pics from our wee gig last night. A bit concerned to walk in and see unfinished drywall and a smoky haze, but a fun crowd overall with some impromptu tunes thrown in. Thanks to Kara for the pics! #livemusic #indie
Mid set. Kevin on the right with his D18, me on the left with the OM28. Hidden behind is the Emerald Amicus 12 string. On the wall behind is the dart board- management had to stop the players so we could set up. I was concerned they’d be unhappy, but they were cool. New guitar day! An Emerald Amicus 12 string, in all black carbon Fiber. Black Opus. This little guy really sings. Can’t wait to try it out with the band. One for @weirdguitar maybe? #ngd #guitar
In front, a black guitar on a wooden floor. It is an Emerald Amicus Black Opus, from Donegal Ireland. It has 12 strings, a very short scale, and is incredibly loud! Plays great straight out of the case. No setup required!

Behind it is my 2006 Martin D12-28, for reference. It is about 4 frets worth of longer scale. Also a beauty, but very head heavy! I replaced the metal tuner buttons with pearl and took off the washers, which saved (no joke) about a pound of weight. The Emerald Amicus on the stand against the Martin D12-28. Pretty accurately shows the scale difference. The headstock of the Amicus. All black carbon fiber with black tuners. Heavy for its size, but very well balanced.

Our stage set. “Stage”! Our virtual tip jar got us a cool $10 to split- but cash is king! The FIRE bucket is amazingly effective as a tip jar.

On the left is my set up, with music stand in the fore, my pedalboard below, and the OM28 behind. On the right is Kevin’s D28. The background is our new band backdrop, with the brewery logo aglow behind. My Martin OM28. This is such an awesome guitar. So many voices, and takes everything I throw at it. I updated it this week, since Stew-Mac was having a sale: Gold Grover tuners, gold strap button and gold end pin jack for about $100. The metal parts kinda mismatched before with chrome tuners, steel strap button and bronze end pin. I joke that it makes the sound “richer”….The pedalboard. In order shown (not the signal path) bottom row l to r: Mythos Mjolnir (for the boost but it’s a beast), Boss Dimension C (secret weapon), Mythos Fates Chorus (that 12 string sound), Kelley splitter and a Fishman wireless receiver. Top row: Sonicake Factory acoustic preamp, a rarely used Boss delay, and a Stark tuner. The tuner is on the B circuit off the splitter, so I can mute and tune.

In 2012, I traveled to Malone NY where it was -30 degrees. In a warm guitar workshop I learned the art of pearl inlay and the basics of guitar building. Dave Nichols was a wonderful teacher and an incredible craftsman. #guitar #pearlinlay
An acoustic guitar.

The shape is a Martin OOO/OM style. It is an Appalachian Spruce top with mahogany back and sides. The inlay on the headstock and 19th fret are clovers designed, cut and inlaid by me with Dave’s supervision. The dots are also hand cut- super tedious! The pick guard came later - it is one of Mario Proulx’s pickquard, and is a stunner.

This is a fun small bodied guitar. Great for couch sitting and quiet strumming.

I regret not getting another opportunity to visit Malone. It was such a warm and welcoming workshop. I do still do inlay work, and quite a bit of luthiery. Not quite ready to build another acoustic, but getting there…

A little afternoon guitar playing while sipping an adult beverage. Nowhere to be til Monday, and I got sick leave to burn. Homebrew Imperial Stout, 8% abv. #Bskybeer #Martinguitar
A dark beer in a fat tulip shape glass. The glass is from a defunct brewery where I used to work, Brew Republic Bierwerks. The beer is an Imperial Stout, very dark and chocolatey, with a tight creamy tan color head. It is on a drink coaster that says “I drink to make people more interesting”. There is a red Snark tuner next to it. Behind is my Martin D28 from 2005. It is my daily driver and has seen some use. I found it in Japan and I feel I rescued it, as the neck needed a reset and a fret level. It was nearly unplayable.

A pleasant surprise! I don’t often go to the big box store (where shopping is a baffling experience), but saw this and grabbed 2. Super nice price for a bomber of 8.5ish% beer. This is actually brewed by Deschutes. Boozy and chocolatey and I’m going to get more. #bskybeer
A bomber bottle of beer next to a glass of very dark beer on a wooden table, trees and patio furniture visible behind.

The beer is Kirkland Vintage Ale. It is an 8.5ish bourbon barrel style ale. I think it was $8 a bottle? Outrageous, and how can you say no? But it was an excellent gamble. I’ll need to go get more to *try* to cellar. Very tasty indeed. Brewed and bottled by Deschutes, and they were not shy about the branding considering it’s from Costco and labeled as Kirkland.

Current situation. Early voting started today in Virginia.
A black guitar case against a brown hardwood floor. On the case are two stickers. At the top is a black/white/yellow design of an acoustic guitar with a sash around it reading “This Machine Kills Fascists”. Below it is a Prince William County “I Voted” sticker with a blue border saying the same in different languages.

Ladies and gentlepersons: I’m not entirely sure how many followers are local to me, but if you are in Northern Virginia on Monday evening, my band Derelict Dog will be playing at Mill Street Draft Garden in Occoquan VA., supporting Ms Sewell and her campaign. Alt text for deets.
Brianapooza, October 6, 6pm at Mill Street Draft Garden in Occoquan VA. Derelict Dog will be playing at least one set, maybe 2 of our usual mix of classics and contemporaries as well as original songs.

Ms Sewell is running as a democratic delegate for Virginia State District 25. This is a paid event, and a contribution must be paid to get into the event. HOWEVER if you want to sit on the sidewalk and hear us no one is stopping you! To RSVP and contribute please go to https://secure.actblue.com/donate/sewell100625 or contact joe@sewellfordelegate.com

Very nice day for a refreshing adult 5% beverage. W22 from Water’s End Brewery, Woodbridge VA. Nice thing is I can stumble home from here. Ya know, if necessary of course… #Bskybeer
An amber lager. It is a dark amber color in a 16 ounce glass. The glass is on a red stained picnic table in a courtyard. Behind is a party tent as the brewery celebrated its 9th birthday yesterday. The sky is a gorgeous September blue.

We had some fun playing guitars. There may have been beer involved. If you’re interested we are on the Insta as Derelict Dog. Come see us play!
Derelict Dog, the band. To the left, Kevin Fahy on the D18 singing lead and playing mostly rhythm. Middle foreground is a glass of dark yellow beer, a Pilsner from Water’s End Brewery, where we are playing. And me hovering above the beer with the OM28- Rhythm, leads, and backing vocals.

Brew Day. Hazy IPA coming soon.
4 silver packets arranged around a white/black/gold packet. The silver packets are all 2 ounces of different hops- Amarillo, Simcoe, Citra, and Mosaic. The smaller packet is Verdant IPA dry ale yeast. I need to order dry yeast during the summer as anything else tends to die in transit with the heat. I’ll use wet yeast on winter brew days.
