Happy National Walk & Roll to School Day! Here’s my all-time fav clip of kids making their way to school - soon after this news story a bridge was built connecting the island to the mainland so I love the moment that was captured - so many tales #WalktoSchoolDay m.youtube.com/watch?v=-ULU...

Back to Dublin: lots of people hop onto passing buses when it starts raining & then stepping off again when it stops. So public transit plays a role (and the Leap Card 90-minute fare helps with that too)

On a separate note, I was very impressed by the umbrella parking when I visited Japan

Hmm…not sure it’s universal. In Dublin, you see surprisingly few umbrellas being carried or when it’s raining. Umbrellas usually means it's a wedding, a funeral, tourists or someone just got their hair done. My long-time theory: rain starts & stops so quickly that locals can’t be bothered

Generations before us fought for walkable streets. They set for us the example we need today. Cleveland 1961: “WALL OF MOTHERS: … Approximately 200 mothers stood along the edge of the road, giving their schoolchildren protection from the traffic.”

I have to think for a second & then I know! When my kids were small, I had a world map sealed onto our kitchen tabletop (a commercial pour like in a bar) - the idea was you could do any craft project on that surface -my grown-up kids talk wistfully about that map & all the conversations it sparked

It actually feels like there’s a homing pigeon living inside of me -heading away from my destination, even as part of a sensible/safer route, feels instinctively wrong just wrong Also I love maps & I am currently under a household soft-ban from framing & hanging any more

My sense of direction feels like fundamental part of my being - I only noticed it when I moved to US with fellow program participants - as we navigated a new city, I couldn’t understand why what was obvious to me, puzzled another - I credit to getting myself around as a child (+ a some aptitude)

Lots of Halloween traditions going back thousands of years so it’s good to connect into festivals - bonfires, turnip carving, apple bopping. Purchase a (good-quality) Halloween brack & eat with lots of butter - whoever finds the ring in the brack will be married in a year -never fails

Not sure what to say but this happened right outside the window of where I was staying in Philly and it was a terribly sad scene. Street crashes happen in the blink of an eye & change the lives of whole circles of those involved forever.

C'est moi. Finally got a project on my home turf...it's an interesting site 'cos it's an office building that was repurposed as an elementary school near Seven Corners. No playground to speak of so we were looking to make the most of the asphalt they had. Gosh I love seeing happy kids on wheels

As we strive to make our streets safer for children, we must also give children safe and fun opportunities to develop the skills they need to use them. That’s where traffic gardens come in. Listen in to Fionnuala Quinn (@finnbike.bsky.social) with @John Simmerman of @activetowns.bsky.social:
