Still, after nearly two weeks of leaving this article open in my browser, I’m left with reinforcement of my long-held and oft-related strategy nugget. Strategy is about trade off, and leaders better know why they’re choosing “potentially great” at the expense of many other “potential greats.” 6/6

Jeffery Harvey, DEL, CEM @findjeffness.bsky.social · 21/05/2026
I don’t mean to assign blame. I question how committed leaders were to the strategy when they were (seemingly) actively shopping for other uses for the land. The case resonates with me because I’ve seen leaders in rural areas face various iterations of this dilemma throughout my career. 5/6

We need stick-to-it-ness because the really important decisions aren’t often between good and bad. We’re choosing amongst multiple paths with the potential to be good, or even great. 4/6

I’ve frequently reminded students that strategy is about trade-offs. (Thanks, Porter!) Strategic leadership is, in part, about understanding/articulating the trade off and why it was warranted. When we understand the what and the why, it’s easier to stick to it. 3/6

Something in the article stood out to me: short termism. Leaders at all levels make the next decision up, with minimal thought of what is down the pike. I get it; we’re faced with an overwhelming number of decision points & many of those deal with the short term. But “many” is not “all.” 2/6

You see the link preview, and you think this post is about a data center. It could be, but it’s not. I've been sitting on it for a while, trying to figure out just why this article sticks with me. It’s because of leadership and strategy. 1/6 dailyyonder.com/how-a-data-c...

Watched "Arrival" again. I like it. It's not lost on me that a linguist saves the world. (LOL implied) It reminds me of my studies in language (poetry, linguistics, or discourse and leadership), when everything is framed as competition, one only sees the world as winners and losers.

I'm not in the camp of families needing more children. That's a choice. Rather, I'm for making our state more attractive to "in-comers." Of changing the narrative that WV is only worth sweat-equity work. Of working within our communities to help them realize there's more to the world than coal. 3/3

We say the kids are leaving, a narrative supported (at surface) by an outflow of college graduates. But what if many of those graduates come into WV for school and simply go home, never intending to stay? What if the local ones, mostly, stay? Per this data, there are fewer locals to stay. 2/3

I live in northern WV, far from the impacted area, and I was born a little over six years after Buffalo Creek happened. Still, this one hits hard because all WV communities know what it's like to surrender themselves to industry, all because we're made to think we're not worth anything more.

I don't readily know an answer as myriad variables are at play. Two things I do know, though, are that (a) it's not acceptable to let an entire region of the country hollow out, in large part just because it's rural, and (b) doubling down on folksy culture to support tourism isn't THE answer. 2/2
