The journey from Prague had been long and messy. Two wolves had tailed her- she’d throated one in the airport, and barely managed to drown the other in the Fort Mifflin moat. The cover of night was helpful for such filthy work, at least, and essential for what she came to meet. Compared to running on the lamb across Europe, making her way up the Delaware Expressway was a simple matter, and compared to some of the back alleys she’d had to sleep, Head House Square was positively pleasant.
Not that it wasn’t pleasant on any old day, but after the fall of her house, bright, happy brick businesses were hardly her day to day operations. The bar stood out to her immediately, built like an old speakeasy. The trained fugitive’s eye always picks out the hidden before the obvious. She rapped at the door with three sharp knocks, as the message had bade her.
“Password?” came a quiet voice from the other side.
She cleared her throat, putting on her best Philly accent. “Picaresque,” she said back, as nonchalantly as she could.
A click, and the door was open. A dark, wood-paneled bar greeted her, replete with the smell of varnish and new paint. Beside her, the voice, a girl even younger than her lurked in the gloom. Black clothes, black eyes, black hair, and a shadow that loomed larger than her. She smelled of blood and death. A vampire.
“A pleasure to meet you, Miss Campbell,” the leech said sweetly, her fanged maw curling into a smile. “We’ve been expecting you. Have a seat wherever you want, and the Prince will be with you soon.”
The Silver Fang bit back a retort and stepped into the dark, doing her best to swallow her uncertainty. Traveling Europe was enough to teach her to avoid leeches, and walking right into the lair of one was… trying, to say the least.
