I have not checked it in a few months (last I remember it did not work), but what a nice surprise today - I found out that there are now Windows ARM native versions of both PyTorch and numpy! very cool!
Screenshot from VS Code showing a simple program testing pytorch and numpy on windows on arm.

The output in the right hand terminal says:
(.venv) PS C:\code\torch-test> python .\test.py
PyTorch version: 2.8.0+cpu
NumPy version: 2.3.2
PyTorch is running on Arm: ARM64
PyTorch matrix multiplication result:
 tensor([[-0.1796, 0.2026, -0.0628],
        [-0.2784, -0.1886, 1.5292],
        [-0.8776, 0.9176, 2.0678]])
PyTorch test successful.
NumPy matrix multiplication result:
 [[ 0.90663809 0.8926634 -1.37397956]

what a comment on today's NYT editorial 🔗 www.nytimes.com/2025/03/08/o...
Elon Musk, the world's richest man, said on the Joe Rogan show that "the fundamental weakness of Western civilization is empathy."

Here's another take:
"In my work with the defendants (at the Nuremberg Trials 1945-1949) I was searching for the nature of evil and I now think I have come close to defining it. A lack of empathy. It’s the one characteristic that connects all the defendants, a genuine incapacity to feel with their fellow men. Evil, I think, is the absence of empathy."

I'm still disappointed that despite this phenomenal campaign from David Mermin, it is the spelling "qubit" instead of "qbit" that became widely adopted (from N. David Mermin, "Quantum Computer Science: An Introduction", Cambridge University Press, 2007)
Unfortunately the preposterous spelling qubit currently holds sway
for the quantum system. The term qubit was invented and first used
in print by the otherwise admirable Benjamin Schumacher.1 A brief
history of the term can be found in the acknowledgments at the end of
his paper. Although “qubit” honors the English (German, Italian,. . .)
rule that q should be followed by u, it ignores the equally powerful
requirement that qu should be followed by a vowel. My guess is that
“qubit” has gained acceptance because it visually resembles an obsolete
English unit of distance, the homonymic cubit. To see its ungainliness
with fresh eyes, it suffices to imagine that Dirac had written qunumber
instead of q-number, or that one erased transparencies and cleaned one’s
ears with Qutips.

took this picture of NGC 7635 (known as the Bubble Nebula) last night It's one of the most photogenic objects in the northern sky, in the constellation Cassiopeia, about 8000 light years away. The shape was created from the stellar wind of very hot central star and is about 7 light years across
star background with the bubble shaped nebula at the center

a brilliant morning in my 'hood. winter is in the air
A serene landscape photograph with a bright sun low in the sky, casting long rays across a frosty, open field. The ground is lightly dusted with frost, creating a subtle shimmer. In the middle ground, there are scattered trees, some leafless, with a layer of mist hanging low, blending the treetops into the horizon. Beyond the mist, distant mountains rise, partially veiled, giving a sense of depth. The sky is clear, transitioning from a soft light blue near the sun to a deeper blue overhead. A narrow path cuts through the field, leading toward the trees and mountains in the distance.

The image humorously contrasts the common perception of temperature colors with a physicist's scientific understanding. On the left side, labeled "Everyone," there’s an image of a faucet with color-coded options: red for hot, blue for cold, and a mix of red and blue for both, representing standard associations of red = hot and blue = cold. On the right side, labeled "Physicist," there’s a meme of a man pointing and saying, "NOT SO FAST MY FRIEND," implying that a physicist would challenge this color coding. In physics, blue light is associated with higher energy and hotter temperatures than red light, so the physicist sees this faucet labeling as scientifically incorrect. The meme humorously highlights how the general public associates red with hot and blue with cold, while a physicist would view it as an inaccurate reflection of the electromagnetic spectrum.
