Suspected power unit issue for Russell, says Merc. Stick a fork in 'er.

Restart 16:33. It appears delay was partly because some teams were arguing restart order. #F1

One way to avoid a repeat of the software mess is to wait until it's bone dry, I suppose. Perhaps the power unit's AI still thinks it's in Bahrain.

First wet session of 2026 causes suspected power unit trouble for #F1's new cars... By the time we get going again, this may well be a dry race...

Race control is getting on with it. Standing water in a couple of corners deemed to have cleared sufficiently, so 10-minute signal has been given. It will actually be a wet start. #F1

Franco Colapinto gets a five-place grid drop for Malaysia for his collision with Pierre Gasly. Flavio Briatore was rather unimpressed, too. "He braked far too late considering the context of the race and the safety car restart. It was a very poor move for a driver of his experience." #F1

As I wrote a while ago in a column, the '27 calendar just reinforces the idea that the format needs a shake-up. Why not try single-lap quali for sprints, with the points leader going out first as a soft way of injecting jeopardy without resorting to reverse grids. www.autosport.com/f1/news/why-...

Why F1's sprint format needs a shake-up
With F1 looking set to increase the number of sprints from 2027, the return of an old qualifying format could be a way to make sprints unique and shake up the order

Details of Max Verstappen's new contract are yet to emerge, but the most logical outcome is that Red Bull will have bought his loyalty with a pay rise in exchange for performance clauses that are more team-friendly than the previous arrangement, which turned his future into a circus act every year.
